I was wondering, what is your profile pic from? Is it from an anime, manga, LN, or original? I couldn't reverse image search it and didn't have much to go on for animecharacterdatabase.

Sadly, many mangaka are "encouraged" by their editors to have teenagers in the lead roles as they assume that the readers consistently fall into that age group, but that's only one side of the coin. What they focus on is the sales of magazines like Shounen Jump, but when a manga is collected into a volume then more adults are willing to buy it as it's no longer what could be classed as a waste of money. One of the major problems is that the magazine sales are given greater priority than the sales of collected works, which is why the doujin market is so important to the manga industry.

Many authors supplement their income by selling manga with original storylines that aren't subject to the severe editing process of the magazines, and in some cases they actually make more money that way. Over the years quite a few authors have turned their backs on mainstream publishing after they became disillusioned with repeatedly producing school-based pap.

The Japanese government tried to enforce certain restrictive laws on doujinshi creators a few years ago, until a group of mainstream publishers informed them that such laws would kill the doujin market, and that it was entirely possible that both the manga and anime industries would collapse as a result. At this point in time the doujin market stands as the central pillar supporting both industries - which is why Comiket has so many visitors for every event.

Anime based on Key's visual novels are decent enough, but they can sometimes be a bit too melodramatic for their own good. After Story was notable not for the drama, but for the fact that it showed the boy grow into a man - something that is extremely rare in anime. To be honest, the ending to After Story annoyed me, and I much preferred the end in the movie. That said, there were many good points about that series, which is why I gave it a 9. Clannad itself was more of the typical harem rom-com, much like Air and Kanon.

As for Angel Beats, it loses a lot of ground when you compare it to its direct rival - Haibane Renmei.

The review covers a good portion of my thoughts on the series, but it is a show I would recommend for those who think mahou shoujo anime is just for little girls. That said, I would also recommend watching Nanoha (all three series as you get to see the girl grow into the strongest member of the interdimensional police), and Uta-Kata as well.

Mirai Nikki? I've written about half of a review on it. The concept was good, but it lacked in execution because of the shortsightedness of the industry itself. There will come a day when they realise the automatic limitations they place on shows by only ever choosing kids and teenaged students as main characters. Granted it's due to the mangaka's decision to have a relatively introverted teenager as the lead, but that's simply because the industry thinks that they need to appeal to kids.

Personally I'd like to see shows like Mirai Nikki and Death Note with an adults in the lead roles, as they would be very different - and probably much darker. Monster was a great example of how good shows like that could be.

Anyway, I digress. Sorry about the little tangent there but I get annoyed when a title doesn't fulfill its potential simply because of the business side of the industry.

I'm glad you liked Giant Robo and Aria. Give me a shout if you have any more questions. I may not be able to reply immediately as I'm swamped with work, but I will reply so apologies in advance if it's a tad late.

There's plenty of good anime out there. The trick is not to limit yourself to one or two genres, but to try everything. Take shoujo for example. Most guys will automatically avoid any shoujo anime, but then they miss out on the likes of Skip Beat, Lovely Complex, Ouran High School Host Club, Nodame Cantabile, Kare Kano, and more besides.

Whatever you do, don't watch Aria: The Origination first, as while it will still be enjoyable, it won't make anywhere near as much sense. Watch The Animation first, then The Natural, as they effectively introduce everyone and everything in that world. I've reviewed all three so have a read as it may make it clearer why I recommend watching them in the correct order.

As for all time favourite anime, it all depends on my mood as I don't really have one. A show that I would recommend though, is Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still as it has pretty much everything a growing boy needs :)
