Yeah, I was very surprised with the development of the story in Beastars, to say the least. It started fine, I liked the initital set-up with the prejudice and the segregated school and the murder, but it was dropped fast, and even then the way the rabbit girl was treated was very ew.

With manga, in all honesty, I don't think there is anything wrong with going the usual seinen route at first - Oyasumi Punpun (and other works by Inio Asano), Homunculus, Aku no Hana, Junji Ito's works (usually Uzumaki), Monster or Pluto. My faves are three mangakas with dirty style - Tsutomu Nihei, especially in Blame!, since he consistently fails with storytelling in later works, Q Hayashida with her Dorohedoro (Dai Dark, the new one, seems weaker) and Jiro Matsumoto with his Freesia. Freesia is my favorite manga and one of the favorite works of art in my life, but it's very dirty. Like very. It's very hit or miss with people too. I, personally, love the way he works with motives. Some people fall in love with 20 century Boys, works by Taiyou Matsumoto like Sunny (I think he leans heavily on the experience of boyhood tho, specifically the boy- part), or by Satoshi Mizukami like Hoshi no Samidare (very interesting, doesn’t click with me at all). Dudes go with Berserk, Gantz, Vagabond, Shigurui, Vinland Saga, Blade of the Immortal, Basilisk, which are also, honestly, good.

If we talk top MAL manga, I don’t get why the rating of Kingdom is so high, the art and the plot are both immature, but I’d be crucified for saying it. Sun Ken Rock and Boichi’s most other works are poorly written. Tokyo Ghoul after the first unfinished half is a trainwreck. I dunno why Act-age is so well received too.

If we talk lucky finds, I want to point out Bakuon Rettou. The author is very famous, but I am not a fan of his brand of storytelling usually, this one is autobiographical and therefore more sensible, and the quality of drawings is incredible. I don’t know why people don’t talk more about it, tbh.
I have recently discovered Tsubana, and their Wakusei Closet and Hobgoblin are fascinating. Another creepy cute manga I can recommend is Shadows House, it’s ongoing, and it’s, honestly, something one should follow. It’s not on MAL, because it’s published online, but Imitation Crystal’s mangas are unusual and pleasant, like Kuroki Yodomi no Hedoro-san. And all of this reminds me of a niche favorite Douman Seyman, with his, say, Nickelodion. Maybe it’ll click with you as well.

Thinking about more feminine works, I recommend Aki, her Alosmente or Olimpos, est em with her Golondrina and Udon no Hito (she’s a BL artist mainly tho), maybe something by Hoshino Lily for the style, but especially Youko Nemu with her Gozen 3-ji no Muhouchitai or Kurasu Hako. Also Majo to Neko no Hanashi, and Itsuya-san (two separate titles).

I also don’t see these mentioned much nowadays, but have enjoyed reading them greatly: Kokumin Quiz (dystopia, political), Undercurrent (thriller, also Goggles by the same author), Kekkaishi (one of the better finished shounen), Houseki no Kuni (unique, queer, they say the anime is great too), Ryuu no Kawaii Nanatsu no Ko and other works by the same author (her most known work is Dungeon Meshi, it’s also good), Innocent (well-known actually, still likely niche), Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki (a top notch slice of life romance), Ningyo Ouji (an incredibly good shorts anthology), Deka Wanko (a good lesser known comedy, at least at the beginning), Keyman: The Hand of Judgement (a potent weird mixture), Tokyo Alien Brothers (wacky). I also like to dive into old style shoujo for a bit sometimes, because it’s so radically different, one of the most fascinating things I have read in that style is Marginal, it’s josei tho technically, and a BL grek tragedy epic sci-fi novel bascially.

There’s so much of good manga, tbh. I can also try to look for something specific or a trajectory of reading.

Thanks!!! I am really glad to hear I am not alone, I feel lost when people say it's a deep study of human condition, because where? it's not the first time I have these feelings over a popular manga, but still. The art is interesting though, I have to give it to Beastars.

Sadly, I can't comment on the anime because I haven't watched it, I simply don't watch much anime these days. But looking at people's reactions it must do something right. Logically, it must be more steady, they would need to choose an arc or two and to commit, they can't jump as much as the manga. But idk.
