I'm Phantom_Zach and here is my story when it comes to anime.
More than 99% of the anime I've seen I saw after I got out of high school while in my 20's. Now I watched episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon while growing up on The WB (now known as The CW) when I could and as a kid really found them fascinating. Other than that, I hadn't watched any other anime or even really knew what anime was. When I left my parents house and started living alone I happened upon a YouTube video called "Training with Horo subbed" (it should be Holo in my opinion not explaining that here) and that's when my new found "obsession" with anime began. I spent the next few years soaking up as much dubbed anime as I could find (good or bad) that interested me, mostly by pirating it or buying it digitally on my Xbox 360. Somewhere down the line I realized most anime didn't have an English dub so I starting watching anime subbed, giving myself a much larger pool to pick anime to watch from.
Nowadays I only watch subs and I watch them on legal streaming services I have access to (Crunchyroll, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu) and I buy physical copies of series I really want. I will admit though I do prefer the dub on "older" series I've decided to rewatch for personal reasons I hope should be obvious. Long story short I've seen some odd 300 anime series in just the short time between my early and late 20's, which I think is pretty impressive considering I have other time-consuming hobbies like video games in my life.
If you managed to read this far, I almost exclusively watch and like anime made after the turn of the century and since I did not grow up with the older stuff I cannot get into it (and trust me I've tried I just don't like it). That being said there hasn't been many anime series to come out that I've loved in recent years and most of my favorites aired approximately 8-11 years ago, right around the time I really got into anime. I do always manage to find a few new series every season that I can enjoy and occasionally I go back to ones I might have missed from a season or two back and binge them to completion. Finding an anime series that wasn't made in the last year that I can get into though is truly becoming a harder and harder thing for me to do.
