I ignore or refuse friends request who don't have similar tastes to me.
Especially if it's not to post a message or have a conversation with me, moreover if you have nothing in common with me.
Main language : French
Ranking explained ↓
1 : Absolutely atrocious in every sense of the word. For me, that includes art
2 : Disappointed with the way the characters, character development, and/or story played out.
I could appreciate one or two things, but overall, I was severely disappointed.
3 : This series does not need to exist or was painful to watch
I was repeatedly annoyed by the character(s) or certain scenes in the anime.
4 : Very uninspired. Rarely enjoyable.
Maybe a couple of characters I enjoyed, or some sort of character development or music or whatever I enjoyed, but the rest I did not.
5 : A lot of issues that I couldn't ignore.
But there were some things I liked. Pleasant at times but mostly uninspired. Very mixed reviews or just plain boring. Often, "I wanted to like this series".
6 : A series that has potential, but is weighed down by its flaws. Many forgettable series end up here.
There is nothing really amazing or remarkable, but the anime achieved its goals in a satisfactory way.
7 : Good, could have been better. There were some flaws, either personal issues or other flaws. Something that stood out because of one or more elements that had the makings of a 9+ but there were too many small recurring problems or one big problem like a terrible ending.
8 : Almost a complete experience. An "imperfect masterpiece." It does everything right except one thing. Whether it's a bad ending or some other plot flaw, a character that had potential but didn't hit the mark, or whatever it was, there was something that kept it from moving forward.
9 : A great piece of anime that may have some personal issues or tics that I can't ignore but I still love it. Complete Experience. This reached the pinnacle of what is possible without breaking new ground for me in any way.
10 : Masterpiece. Although it has a few problems, these are so minor that they don't deserve to be mentioned. Obviously nothing is perfect, but 10 as they are personal favorites. Groundbreaking experience.
Things that pushed the boundaries of what I thought I could experience in fiction/art.
Some criterias I like and dislike ↓
Optional criterias : good atmosphere / subversion of the genre / animations / pacing / dubbing of seiyu / themes / ideologies / writing / depth / plot-twist / cliffhanger / power up system / powers to mastered / good conclusion / mature / great universe / excellent characters / good writting / well mastered / the author doesn't get lost / OST / good exploitation / good length / faithfull adaptation / as constant as possible / good exploitation / almost no flaws / fast to read / good pacing <- it realy depend of the series for that.
Cons : number defect but not too much / defect passable / became less and less good / childish shounen humor / plot armor ( too much ) / uninteresting comic relief character(s) / faulty number but not too much / forced drama/romance / bad melodrama / boring / generic / power of friendship / bad writting / unbearable humor / predictable / boring unniverse-lore / fighting pattern / bad execution / edgy for being cool / episodic, always the same narrative / repetitive.
Pros : almost everything is mastered / the author doesn't get lost with his work / good writing / great universe / good exploitation / characters among the best / good conclusion / depth / almost no flaws or some minor / a revolutionary experience unprecedented/innovative.
I hate to judge by nostalgia because I may have liked something when I was younger, it is not valid of an opinion in this case. Just being nostalgic and not objective/critic.
Before simply judging by what the tags say in my lists, it would be smarter to click on the "more" which often contains spoilers and very often taken from users reviews that I agree with, so I won't waste time rephrasing everything if I already agree with everything the person says. and it's easier for me when someone asks me why I didn't like something, than to find the review (especially when there are a lot of them)
My favorites are the things I consider to be the best, and most complete in general, in relation to my criterias.
My favorites are in order for the characters.
It was difficult but I put the 10 best and most complete and well developed in my opinion.
Fair enough on mononke, it sounds like with that we just disagree on how to rate anime when it comes to dropping or holding a show.
There's a couple reason why Jojo and Evangelion are worse than a show like cowboy bebop, I already explained why I like cowboy bebop and jojo in my previous comment if I recall so I'll hold off on that.
When it comes to the Evangelion movies, the largest reason why they cannot be as good as bebop is firstly because of how they compare to the origional series, which is much weaker. Shiji in the series makes decisive choices, whereas Shinji in the movies cannot make choice for himself and is constantly shallowly manipulated by others. The relationship between Shinji and his father in the movies was also changed to his father being just simply disgusted with Shinji, versus him having multiple different motivations which caused him to neglect shinji like in the origional series. While the movies have an upgrade in terms of image quality when it comes to art style specifically it is a more generic 2010s style of drawing and color design, whereas the original show had a distinct style. The amount of fanservices in the movies is rather atrocious and detracts from the plot significantly. Likewise, when the movies starts to differ in plot from the anime, similarly to "End of Evangelion" it does not really justify having an alternative ending based on the 'time loop' plot trope. This is explained during this point in time the author of Evangelion was having issues when it came to his identity in writing. he associated everything he did with evangelion and he could not break away from the series. This kind of creative slump is really mimicked in the movies.
Compare that to cowboy bebop which:
-Has characters which make their own decisive actions and thus are more than one dimensional characters.
-Has a justification of overarching plot points, and standalone plotpoints in each episode
-Has a masterpiece of a soundtrack, extremely good animation for its time, and a distinct and very high quality art style
-One of the few anime in existence with good VA for the english Dub.
Oh Also I do want to make a few clarifications to you in your hunter x hunter review because there are a few inaccuracies you made when it came to describing the plot. It's not that I'm trying to be pretentious or am trying to change your mind, it's more so that you can make sure you express your distaste for the show using accurate plot points.
The reason why Gon cared for Kite so much is right before Gon left on his Journey, Kite saved his life from a foxbear. The original 1999 anime portrays this better because the scene is towards the beginning of the series whereas it's a flashback in the 2011 version. So Gon was deeply indebted to Kite, it was more than him just knowing kite for a few weeks. That's why gon's emotions in that scene not only make sense, but also serve as character development for him.
Gon's overarching goal is to find his father yes, but because he isn't a 1 dimensional character and that's why he has other motivations which cause him to get 'sidetracked' as you say (If he didn't get sidetracked interestingly enough that would have made him more 1 dimensional). Which makes sense because he really hasn't seen his father. He has seen kite though, and Kite knew his father which is probably why he stuck around with him. Thus gon at this point in time really has 3 main motivators: Finding his father, being with kite (the man who saved his life), and being a hunter (hunters are naturally explorative and adventurous). When kite is kidnapped, Gon's motivations are conflicted between him trying to save kite (in order to pay back his debt to kite for saving his life) and his original goal of finding his father, and ultimately even his being a hunter (because being a hunter requires the ability of nen use and Gon chose to sacrifice his ability to use nen in order to get revenge on Pitou for killing Kite).
The reason why the chimera ants do not look like ants do not look like 'ants' is yes because they are mixed with different species DNA. But their character designs are still insectoid, and it is most notably seen in the legs which have insect-like appendages. If you would imagine a cross between something that is an ant and something that is a mammal for instance there would be a spectrum of things that more resemble ants, and things that more resemble a mammal. The designs tend to just lean closer to the mammal side of the spectrum, and this is explained by the 'gimick' of the ants.
Meruem's character motivations are more detailed than just ruling the world. Meruem is in conflict within himself between the nature of himself as an ant and a human. His nature as an ant tells him to rule the world as an ant king because that is what his purpose as a king ant is, whereas his nature as a human gives him more human emotions, rationality, and the ability to choose to act against his ant nature. For that reason Meruem is also not a 1 dimensional character. Likewise his transition from primarily following his ant instincts, to his human instincts (or well, evil to good) is not done in a stereotypical way such as dragon ball z, where Vegeta for instance joins gon after he is defeated, but ohhh actually he's still evil but he's also not.
Alluka is a product of the manga going on Hiatus due to problems with Togashi's back. The explanation for Alluka's power comes in the next arc which has not yet been adapted into an anime yet. I know I'm pulling 'the manga has the answer' here and an anime should be considered largely based on its own standalone plot but well, I do sincerely believe if togashi did not have back issues we would have an adaption of the latest arc at this point. So I tend to make an exception when it comes to this.
Similarly with Kurapika, he is brought back in the next arc following where the anime drops off. And well, the reason why not all characters are followed at all times is mostly because the focus of Hunter x Hunter tends to be placed more on the world as a whole rather than on Gon specifically, especially considering Gon becomes less and less of a focus over time, it just becomes particularly noticeable on the Chimera ant Arc and beyond. So it's not exactly a typical shonen in that regards, Gon isn't the be all end all focus of the show.
