I’m Pancakes, I’ve been watching anime for 7+ years. I mostly consume Shonen, Action, and Ecchi media. I maintain this list as a way to remember what shows I’ve watched and how I felt about them.
An reference for what my numerical scores translate to:
10. Masterpiece
These stories are impactful, genre-defining, and personally meaningful. I think it’s a bit cliche to say that a piece of media “changed your life” however, I would say that these stories changed me. These stories stick with me forever; constantly returning to them in my head and remembering the feelings they brought. They’ve altered my perspective, inspired me, and make me passionate when I talk about them. I would recommend these stories anytime I get the chance in hopes that someone else may be impacted by them in the way I have.
9. Impactful
A category for stories that are so close to being a masterpiece, but just barely fall short. This is usually due to me not connecting with the themes strongly enough to consider a story a true masterpiece. Nevertheless these stories stick with me for long periods of time, and are a joy to experience all around. I’d consider anything in this category a “must watch” or “must read” for any fans of the medium.
8. Memorable
Stories that are excellently executed, strong in all ways, and have memorable themes. I continue to think about these stories long after I’ve finished watching them. However, these stories are missing that “spark” or “x factor” that keeps them from being a 9 or a 10. I’d highly recommend any media in this category.
7. Good
Stories in this category usually are strong in many different ways, but either lack a strong thematic element, or fail to execute its thematic elements in a meaningful way. Media made purely for entertainment value often fall here, or media that has many strong elements with a single issue preventing it from being a higher rating.
6. Above Average
This rating is for stories that have a single particularly strong aspect to them (writing, humor, concept, etc). They are a cut above the average media in its genre.
5. Fine
The standard, most media will fall into this category. Stories in this category have nothing explicitly wrong with them. They offer little outside of just being entertainment, or if they do, I simply did not connect with the themes/concepts the story was offering.
4. Forgettable
Stories with this rating are the kind you forget about as soon as you stop watching/reading them. They may not have many explicitly “bad” aspects to them, but they fail to provide anything of substance either. They’re the kind of stories that other works have done far better. Alternatively stories with this rating have a single, frustrating aspect to them that brings the score down to what may normally be a 5 or a 6. I’d only recommend shows with this rating if you’re a fan of their genre.
3. Bad
Stories that are executed poorly, or are thematically, conceptually, or visually weak. These shows/manga may have one or two “okay” aspects to them. I would only recommend these if someone has a particular interest in a story, or if they are morbidly curious.
2. Horrible
For stories that offer nothing original, and are just made of tropes and ideas that other stories do far better. Stories in this category are subpar, or worse, in every aspect. Consuming these stories is borderline painful. I wouldn’t recommend stories in this category under any circumstance.
1. Offensive
A rating reserved for stories that are morally reprehensible and/or repugnant. Stories that insensitively use taboo or sensitive topics and themes as a lazy way to characterize their world and characters, or just uses it as a cheap way to get a reaction from the audience. This usually results in me dropping the story immediately, and without remorse.
