Its very hard for a writer to steer clear of all cliche, no matter how you try a series will have cliche in it. I like that the author for snk tries to freshen things up and make a few tweaks in his series that makes it feel different from the rest in some ways.

I saw your comment on the final episode of snk. the battle between the female titan and eren in the manga is far different from the anime. He also had little to no hesitation in the manga as well.
