I had watched some anime as I was growing up, back before we knew it as "Anime".
Shows like
Speed Racer (70's) &
Star Blazers (80's), and then later I would catch DBZ or Sailor Moon (90's) on early morning TV before I left for work.
I didn't really dive into anime until the beginning of 2014. Everything on my list has been watched/re-watched since then.
It all started with getting copies of the first 2 Appleseed movies, and when I mentioned it to a co-worker, he recommended a few anime I might like based on some of my preferences.
Shows like Bleach, Queen's Blade, the movies Akira and Princess Mononoke were among them.
It's been a fun ride ever since, and I look forward to more.
There will probably always be exceptions, but these usually hold true:
I'm not really into sports anime, although I enjoyed a few that were sport or competition themed.
I'm not into Idol shows, reverse harem, or stuff geared more for early teens and younger.
I don't typically go for shows where the main cast is Junior High age or younger.
Tsunderes are often annoying characters for me, but some have been done well.
I like Fantasy and Sci-fi stories.
I also enjoy comedy, romance, supernatural, harem, magic, and action shows, with or without ecchi and/or nudity.
Large bouncy tiddies for the win, I say. Sorry lolicons, I respect your preferences, but I won't be attending any of your parties or meetings.
I'm not as critical as some people when watching anime, so shows like SAO, AOT and Re:Zero (just to name a few of the more talked-about ones) were actually enjoyable for me.
I don't mind CGI shows like Ajin and Knights of Sidonia, and have yet to watch one that I thought was a total mess. Obviously, some are done better than others.
I don't break down similar shows to the lowest common denominator either.. ie (beta MC has a harem and doesn't choose one "oh, those 2 shows are exactly the same").
I see enough differences between similar shows to see and enjoy them separately, and not rage about the similarities.
My favorites lists: They're not in any particular order, and they aren't necessarily the TOP favorites for the category either.
They may change from time to time.
High School DxD is the only LN series I've had an interest in reading, and have been doing so as the translations come out. Props to mrleoo01, zxzxzx, and Code-Zero for their hard work.
It will probably remain my only listing under Manga.
As you may have noticed with some of my forum posts, I can be an ornery old fart.
I don't consider myself a "shit poster", but some comments or threads just beg for a snarky reply so I give one.
Don't take me too seriously kids. If need be, just think of me as that old guy down the street always yelling at you to get off his lawn.

TBH, I share the same sentiment about lifting. I don't enjoy doing it. I would've stopped long ago if it weren't for the health benefits. Before I lifted, my back was killing me, and I couldn't sit upright for long and had perpetual neck & shoulder pain.
I wish we could be like anime characters who can remain fit and strong without working out. Haha
If you had never stopped lifting, you could have maintained your numbers. I've read many people in their 60s-70s still lifting 100kg.
I was the same, watching anime, not knowing it was anime. I just remembered thinking that foreign cartoons were so much deeper than American.
Oh, well, late bloomer or not, we're here to stay.
It was the profile name and avatar that did it for me. I also fit into the 'OAD' category; been watching anime and reading manga for a long time. I feel we 'old heads' need to stick together.
Currently checking your lists now.
So I take it that none of the syndicated channel back in the 80's broadcasted Robotech, you know this one:
How on earth did you not seen this when this was broadcasted back in the 80's? Robotech was the show that jump-stated the anime fandom in the US along with other stuff like did you know back in the 70's (& 80's), local UHF channels in the US were broadcasting subtitled anime like Raideeen, Captain Harlock, Cyborg 009, etc.... in some high marketed area. Don't tell me you didn't live in LA, San Francisco, or any big city with Japanese-American population when this was happening?
You must have grown up seeing these toys, Shogun Warriors (toys from mecha anime of the 70's), you didn't have one at all when you were growing up:
These toys were everywhere in the 70's, how did you missed these toys? That led to Force Five:
How on earth did you missed these back in 1980-1981?
Also, let me guess in the early 90's, nobody told you about these:
How on earth did no anime fan in the 90's didn't reach out to you about anime in general?
Also, when you became a fan today, how many anime from the 80's and 90's did you missed the first time you got chance to watch now ever since becoming a fan?
Would you ever watch Kimagure Orange Road (a famous 80's anime) if you were given a chance?
What about Cat's Eye (another 80's anime)? Would you watch it given that it wasn't made available to you back then?
What about Megazone 23?
I mean I can't believe a person like you would've not picked up on anime given that exposure you had. I'll end this by giving this Reddit AMA from a old-school anime fan (this person is a 40 something-year old at the time of this thread from 8 years ago, he/she's probably now 50 years old today) who had been a anime fan around the same period when you were young.
I hope you can explain why the heck did you missed Robotech, and how the heck did you missed that many opportunity to be an anime fan in the late 80's/early-mid 90's.

I have a question: what year were you born?
How did you not became a anime fan earlier like in the late 80's and early 90's. You do know that the anime fandom in the US is much older then you think.
I take it that you didn't see Robotech: the Macross Saga when you were younger. I mean there were a lot of anime back in the 80's and 90's that would've gotten you into anime I mean did you not watch anime on Syfy/Sci-Fi Channel back in the old day:
I mean did nobody back in the 90's told you about this:
Or this:
or nobody in the 90's showed you this:
I hope you have a happy new year as well!
