a 26 year old boomer who enjoy watching animes and Tokusatsu shows between new and old from the range of 1996 to 1907. I also do watch newer anime titles from 1997 to present because I want to expand my taste in anime when it comes to the media itself to storytelling, Impact, legacy, art, entertainment. [DISCLAIMER: Hyping or force recommendation is prohibited under any circumstances, because if you hype or forcing me to watch any specific anime, or else I will lose all interest and not worth watching]

Around 40 episodes of 1989 is available in youtube with English subtitles. I heard it is very dark and almost goes unfaithful to source material and more or less similar to Ginga Negaroboshi Gin. But i am still gonna watch it regardless. I guess 1997 film would be a better replacement to Susume Leo since it also adapts 2nd half of manga albeit more faithfully.
We don’t really even know why GNG eventually became so popular here, but we think it’s because that legendary and somewhat amusing Finnish dub (which was censored with many scenes, usually because of violence) was released many times on VHS tapes (at least in 1989, 1994, 1996 and 1998) and became really popular among children. Then in 2003 we finally got the uncut version as a DVD box with the original Japanese dub version and Finnish subtitles and in 2010 we finally got even the original manga series in Finnish.
Also the mangaka himself visited Finland TWICE! (but unfortunately I couldn't see him both times :/)
The reason has also been thought to be that because the theme of the series is bear hunting with dogs, which is very familiar to Finns, that's why we like the series so much.
Dragon Ball manga and anime have also been very popular here. At the beginning of the 2000s, Dragon Ball Z was even shown on television with an English dub and subtitles in Finnish and at the same time manga was translated and almost threatened to be banned in Finland altogether because of its blatant humor xD
