LEGACY ACCOUNT! Stopped watching anime with english subs in September 2023 as I decided to go in on learning japanese. To separate between shows experienced in english (full comprehension) and japanese (also due to the fact that I'm gonna be rewatching through different lens), I made an immersion MAL profile you can find at O_Polo_JAP, but I have since switched to AniList due to the bad precedent MAL set by not including Scott Pilgrim in their database, but now I've realized the platform is also just better. I welcome you in joining me in the switch because the only thing AniList lacks is a big community like MAL's, with all the reviews, discussions and stacks (only thing I miss from MAL :sob:). Also, the rating criteria has been pretty shit for a while and def needs to be revised, and since I won't be updating this account anymore who knows how long has passed when you see this, so take ratings with a grain of salt. ratings and their meanings:
10 - Masterpiece: Apart from just having almost no flaws, it has to impact me personally and I must have generally enjoyed it immensly. The difference between a 9 and a 10 show is mostly personal bias really. If a 9 show is perfect in almost everything it tries to achieve, then a 10 show is also the same but the things it tries to achieve really appeal to me personally.
9 - Excellent: Perfect in everything it tries to achieve. Has almost no flaws. Any anime here is extraordinary, perfectly executed, and brings something new to its own genre. Missing that impact or enjoyment, or just a few things that bring it down a bit. Shows here are masterclasses of anime. Engaging and unique, shows here have very unique ideas or aspects that are executed very well. These shows have a lasting impact that lasts for a while, getting close to invoking the post-show void. Any show here is a must-watch really.
8 - Very Good: Innovative, and original. Has some minor flaws. Extremely solid overall, has its own thing going on and executes it very well. Anything here is a solid recommendation to anyone. Shows here probably have some unique ideas or aspects that separate them from the rest. Here, shows have a bit more of a lasting impact.
7 - Good: Good idea, not so good execution. So it had something going for it, but kinda ruined by something else. Shows here are entertaining all around but nothing more really. They usually don't have any lasting impact, just a fun time with good moments and maybe cool ideas here and there, but mostly lacking in anything really special.
6 - Fine: A bit above average. Does a bit more than just the average. Pretty entertaining with some occasional moments and maybe some innovative things but mostly forgettable after watching.
5 - Average: Average. What more can I say?
4 - Bad: Worse than the average.
3 - Very Bad: Has some major flaws.
2 - Horrible: Does almost everything wrong, but has at least one redeeming quality.
1 - Apalling: Everything is bad. There are no redeeming qualities. It does absolutely nothing right.
Also one thing, I rarely give less than 6 cause I usually just don't watch shows if they're average or worse cause they're just not worth my time, I get bored, and I could just be watching something else that's better.

edit: Okay, MAL swallowed it. Good job MAL.
"I distinctively made that difference to point out that you're being thrown into that category."
Sure, but I'm thrown in there because people want to throw me in there, as I showed by the leap you had to take from "dislike some" to "dislike all".
"I still think you're unfairly biased against the new anime though."
Why unfairly? Isn't that your own bias talking there?
You also dismissed Texhnolyze, Princess Tutu and Koi Kaze immediately without having even seen them. Is that not bias? Like I at least watched Mob Psycho II, Re:Zero, Odd Taxi and Made in Abyss before I formed an opinion on them.
"Also, it doesn't help that your average is around 5. Not saying it's bad, I personally think that's how it's supposed to be."
Good.
"So first of all we have the superficial subjective criticisms such as this anime having flat character design, whatever that means."
I explained it a little in the review: 'You get a dozen cute girls that all look the same but with different clothes and wigs'. Basically the show fails to stand out through its design, it's uninteresting. If I showed it to any non-weeb they would say it looks like all the other weeb-shit.
"The show is also an exposition-heavy mess, which I agree this show is high on the dialogue department but it does not take anything away from it, the dialogue being well delivered and structured, so definitely not a mess."
I elaborated on the exposition in a response to another user where I back up my claims with examples from the manga. Look up the user Skaldi2 if you're interested, comment should still be there.
The "mess" was about the story of the show. It's about some doctor getting reincarnated as an idol's child together with a patient of his who died so the the patient can become an idol while the doctor can avenge his mom who is also his waifu from the person who set her up who is apparently his dad. How is this not messy?
"You say the show has 'big speeches' about lies and all of that, pointing it out as a criticism, and you also see the protagonist as just another edgy protagonist."
Edgy protagonist I stated more matter of factly, though it suggests I think the way the character is written gives off that impression.
The issue with the big speeches about lies, besides that it contributes to the exposition problem, is that it's apologetic. It pretends to criticize the industry while feeding into the industry. "Idol industry corrupt but pls keep supporting it!" It wants to have its cake and eat it too, because it's part of the same system.
"Instead you just insult the first episode, which is ESPECIALLY beloved, saying you had to pause multiple times because it was that boring."
That is just you making assumptions about my intentions. I found the episode boring, that's just how it is. It has nothing to do with bias.
As for constructive criticism, the point of me saying that I find it boring I explain if you read further in the review: 'I wouldn't mind the story being bad if it was at least entertaining but this isn't the case here, so not sure if I'm going to continue this one.'
There are many anime out there that I think are poorly written or presented or whatever but that I still enjoy. It was necessary to make the distinction here.
Do you realize what a huge leap you took there? You went from:
(1) "dislike some modern popular anime" --> "dislike all new shows"
(2) "appreciate old ones" --> "only likes the underground old shows"
It just shows how much you're grasping for straws to find some way to stereotype me. I could also just say that you hate all old shows and only like newer hype shows by that logic.
"You only like underground shows"
How are FMA, Eva and Digimon underground shows?
"You only like old cult classics"
How are Aku no Hana and Ongaku old cult classics?
"Every era has anime for all people"
I have given reasonably high scores to anime from all eras, the most recent one being Vinland Saga S2 from last season.
To me it just comes across like a giant cope. People are pissed that my negative review of an anime they liked became popular and their way of coping with it is to attack me personally since attacking the points made in the review is too much effort.
One more question if you don't mind, why did you write that comment on my profile? Were you just really mad at my review, or did you maybe think "a lot of people insulted him already, so I might as well" kind of thing?
If you don't finish anime you consider bad then why does your list say that you finished some anime you consider bad?
Note: Just because an anime doesn't have amazing animation doesn't mean that it cheap and there are certainly anime adaptions out there with bad level production this just isnt it.
Mushoku Tensei author said in one comment he got inspired by Re:Zero when writing some arcs. I have to search his quote. But both authors are friend and they respect each other and have influence in each other works.
