How I Got into Anime
I remembered watching some Anime from my childhood. I liked watching Pokémon and also Hamtaro up until I was about nine years old. I also remembered watching the occasional anime movie such as maybe KiKi's Delivery Service when I was in elementary school and this Swan Lake movie from an old TV that my uncle's house had when my dad helped him around with moving and stuff. I also liked watching Tokyo Mew Mew and Ojamajo DoReMi in fifth grade, but I only watched them from the 4Kids Saturday Morning block while waiting for Winx Club to start. Otherwise, I wasn't much of an anime fan because most of it seemed to either be dueling anime or shonen battle stuff, at least the stuff that was on TV at the time.
However, my actual interest in Anime started when I've read an IMDb page about Sailor Moon at age 12. Before, the only thing I remembered about Sailor Moon was that doll commercial. However, reading about the edits along with the fact that the show was unlicensed sort of piqued my interest in it even more. Not only that, but I was also getting into old school Nickelodeon shows at the time, and reading about how Nickelodeon actually aired anime during the Eighties and early Nineties solidified it, along with learning about edits made to other Anime I've watched and even Anime like Candy Candy, which was completely different from the Anime I've known, yet this show just fascinated me. I was also into Shin Chan at the time, and even learning about that show and how the original Japanese version is was fascinating.
My experience with Manga is a lot less complicated. I got into manga during the end of junior high, when I rented manga from the library. At first, I've rented random volumes of shojo manga that interested me before actually getting to read some of the manga series chronologically. Of course, I couldn't finish the series I was following because my family moved to a new neighborhood, and the library near it did have manga, but it was a puddle compared to the library in my old neighborhood. At least my new high school's library did have some complete manga series and even carried Shonen Jump back when ViZ sold physical copies of the magazine. I also visited scantalation sites, but it was mostly for unlicensed manga I've wanted to read.
