Hey there, Nese! I do hope you remember me haha?
To be honest I was holding off sending this message since the month after we started talking, as I didn't want to seem: "Stalkerish" or "pushy", but I really did enjoy our conversations last time we spoke, even though I must admit my messages can be rather arduous to reply to. I wanted to ask; are you doing well these days? Everything going swell, well, as well as it can be during this time - in your life?

There is nothing truly like being immersed in a fantasy world, I do the same thing with Warhammer 40K. <3 It’s oddly cathartic, like coming down from a strong high, realizing you’ve just read and studied the worlds of fantasy more methodically than anything in our own lives. There’s such an appeal to a setting that doesn’t even exist that I think intrigues us as a species, almost like a way to simulate events and philosophy that are indeed exaggerated, but still fragments of things we face in our everyday lives. It is only unfortunate that I am not the biggest Tolkein fan. T_T Well, at least in terms of his stories, which I really can’t blame the guy because he wasn’t always a writer, he was a linguist and philosopher and used a lot of his stories to express ideas and these such as martyrdom in Christainity and a lot of occult as well as esoteric ideals. In this regard I greatly respect him, he practically made epic fantasy, but I’ve seldom been able to get attached to a lot of his works. . . which, ironically, the Silmarillion is the only thing of him he’s written for his world that I truly do love. It’s very fascinating reading it to this day. But, and once again, Tolkein wasn’t exactly the most nuanced author but his world was without a doubt capturing and his narratives sharp.

I of course agree. There’s something so precise, and almost venomous, in all the right ways, at how John could praise or destroy something, almost as if he was targeting and honing in on it on a sort of cellular level, but also wasn’t cold and entirely cruel. You could tell the man had a passion for and grew up with the art form. However, and much like George Carlin, another man I greatly respect and learned a lot from, I’m…. somewhat relieved he has not lived to see how bad the medium he loved has become. It’s terrifying at times. I see you’re a Dark Souls fan as well? Bloodborne is more my thing, but I have spent at least 1000 hours talking about the various nuances in Dark Souls as well, from The Hero’s Journey, how it has a foot in Norse mythology. Miyazaki is one of my heroes in this benighted world of gaming. =.= Wait. Also a fan of Metal Gear (the kanji on my profile is a quote of Raiden from MGS2) and Silent Hill--Silent Hill 2--my second favorite game of all time …. You…. where have you been all my time on this site hahahahaha. We need to fanboy-oh, and girl, about this stuff, very soon. :3

You’re never out of time to analyze yourself Nese. May I ask how you pronounce your name?
But, anyway, trust me, you just need to analyze what emotions the work stimulates in you and why. You can learn a lot about yourself and someone just about what they like, though not saying anything even close to new or unique in that regard. For instance, based on first impression, I can see you like works that have melancholy but also pathos, that’s the first sign I take it you’re an introvert - not to psychoanalyze or anything. But now the next step is; talking about how the show resonated these feelings, let’s take Sound of the Sky. The chemistry between the characters being in such an intimate situation and making the most out of it? An old saying goes: “As above, so below”.
Also, I’ve had Sound of the Sky on my ptw list for years, but seeing it was on your favorites made me finally man up in watch it. Despite what that score may indicate, I very much enjoyed it.

Haha I see. Um…. no offense, but if Akira was on the children’s VHS tape, I hope the library’s staff got a talking to. O-o What’s next, Berserk next to Monty Pyhton… Anyhow, that’s a very unique story I have not heard, and I’ve heard a LOT of stories of how people got into the medium. You must have a lot of nostalgia associated with Akira? I wonder if your family is aware of how you got into anime from this hahaha. I'm a big fan of Ghibli myself, don't kill me, but Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite.

Me? Well, I always watched anime as a kid, just didn’t know it. Yu-Gi-Oh on Saturday mornings, Naruto and Dragon Ball Z on Saturday nights. Don’t get me wrong, every kid knows there’s something “different” about these cartoons then, say, Ed Edd n Eddy love, they just have a level of, not maturity, but writing prose that was different - especially the, ya know, talking in their head every 5 seconds part lol. Then again, so was X-Men, and Avatar the Last Airbender, so I just thought they were cartoons for the longest time. It wasn’t until I was 10 that I KNEW what anime was, but just grew out of it, sure, I read the wiki to see what Naruto was up to, but never bought any manga and while I did still watch it just didn’t care about it as much.

It wasn’t until I was homeschooled, at 13, I found anime again. I went through everything on Hulu, ever live action show and adult cartoon, mountains of family guy, The Office, and at my lowest point. *Sigh* Jersey Shore. Let’s not look back at that dark time hahaha. Point was, I exhausted everything. So, I decided, on a whim, to watch an anime. Why? I had nothing else to lose, why not? I watched two at first: Yu-Gi-Oh GX for nostalgia, and Soul Eater on the side. GX was just as cheesy as I remember, but had some pretty good plots, but Soul Eater was… different. Action. Ecchi. Sure, but I could tell it was trying to tell me something else, something greater, an ideal and set of ideals that it wanted to communicate to me behind the action. In the end I watched its 52 episodes, and left feeling satisfied, but also curious at what else this medium can offer me, Soul Eater was akin to X-Men and Batman the Animated series, entertaining, has a few good episodes and has principles it wants to show the viewer, but I still didn’t think of it as any greater than the cartoons I watched before….

Then I watched Death Note. Dear. Dear. Death Note. This show, I do not exaggerate, changed my life. I had never seen something so great in all of an animated medium, the ideas and themes it communicated to me eloquently were, as far as I know at the time, reserved for film and literature. Not anything animated. The shots. The color palettes. The philosophical debates. When I got done with Death Note, I remember exactly what happened next. I sat there for five minutes, staring at the screen blanky, then smiled, and said: “I loved that. I want more of it. . . what else is there?”

The rest is history. <3

With what's been going on in the world, you no doubt have had a lot of time to read. What have you been catching up with lately? Or just playing some games?
Mugetsu- May 1, 2020 8:49 AM
The endless backlog huh? It’s okay, I’m sure you’ll get to it eventually lol, at least I always do in time. I had a show called: “Girls Und Panzer” on my plan to watch list for four years until I finally got to it, and that’s absolutely fair, these are just hobbies we’re under no obligation at all to finish them. A wise man once said: “Life’s too short to read bad shit.” I can tell you right now I have never finished, and will never finish Atlas Shrugged despite being a, let’s say: “here-here” fan of Ayn Rand. . . and I mean very “here-here.”

Before I reply I feel the need to give credit to John, I do hope you pardon me but as a fellow fan I’m sure you understand. I cannot state how much of an influence John had on my life and how much respect I had for him. I’d listen to almost everything he made constantly and you can easily blame him as a reason for one of the ways I exert myself critically, he always gave everything a fair chance no matter how bad it was and had a keen, poignant craft of debating the art form that in many respects bordered on philosophy itself. Whenever he chastised or praised something he always did, not admit, not use a word with such a connotation, but proudly share his biases as they believed that is what made us individuals. I always had a similar belief, but did not know how to articulate it correctly. He along with others, such as Nostalgia Critic, Jontron, and a little channel you’ve most likely not heard of called: “Reinstall Paul”, were a huge influence on my writings - without them helping nurture the analytical mindset I had, it would have surely been smothered and lost along the mundanity that was my life before I embraced these aspects of myself that loved writing. There are very seldom men in this world I respected more than John Peter Bain. And miss him very dearly. The only thing I believe in in this world, frankly, is myself. But if there is some sort of paradise in the vast cosmos, or in some other metaphysical plain, I hope someone, or something, is letting him rest there for eternity. . . and forever criticize the games they have there hahaha.

Now then, I’ll admit, I don’t exactly know what you “see” in me. But if there’s anyway I can reply to that in a way that is not too condescending, let’s just say I’d like to believe I’m someone in touch with my own Heart of Darkness, and try to embrace and find the nuances of every aspect of myself, even if they can be particularly macabre in nature, and incorporate them in my day-to-day life. I strongly believe that if everyone embraces and finds ways to coexist with every fabric of their being, even if they seem horrifying, we can all live fulfilling lives. This is where I’ll stop before I become overly-pedantic lol. I wonder if that rant just took away my “cool” factor. xD

If you’ll allow me to speak my mind, trust me, you can “rate by enjoyment and feeling”, because, despite popular belief, everyone does. Blade Runner. Clockwork Orange. Taxi Driver. No Country for Old Men. Lolita. Lion Devouring the Sun. All of these things are very depressing, and have the oh so cherished “intellectual value”, but people still “feel” good watching and looking at them. I’m sure you can break down exactly, scientifically, why you enjoy everything you do, even so, they’d just be semantics, worth exploring surely if you’re interested, but at the end of the day you feel how ya feel. Don’t feel like the way you rate is wrong, and don’t let anyone tell you the way you rate is wrong. It’s just how you feel, and ignoring that and trying to linearize those emotions are paradoxical to the medium itself. *hugs*

How did you get into anime anyway? I’m very curious. :3

We seem to have a similar and also contrasting dilema. I have no backlog, but also have no space. :/ And traded in having a bookshelf with having my desktop computer which I work and game on… fair if you ask me. Oh yes, absolutely, Lovecraft is my favorite author and I think, if I had to summarize quickly, my favorite thing about his writings, is that you’re forced to view the world through his lense and his works constantly make you in an almost fever-dream state, his writings are often criticized for being word-salad-gibberish, but I strongly argue these people are missing the intention of the work. It’s supposed to be confusing. It’s supposed to make you re-read and make you slowly lose your hold on where, when, and how the story is happening. While he can be pedantic at times, his work gives you so much insight into his psychology, especially his creations/deities such as Cthulhu, which was his fear of the ocean and unknown, Shug-Niggurath, showing the reader how he viewed the act of birth as disgusting and insignificant as well as fears of overpopulation. Reading Lovecraft is like dissecting the mind, both loves, and insecurities, of a xenophobe with sociopathic tendencies - and while he would hate me for my race of course, I will always enjoy Lovecraft. ^T^

My favorite story from him is easily The Rats in the Walls. It’s the only thing he has written that to this day, has actually scared me from its ending and I’m a little afraid to re-read it each time. For others, you can say I’m a big Dunwich Horror, The Tomb, and The Colour out of Space.

I’m so glad that there’s another King fan around. <3 My favorite work from him would have to be Doctor Sleep, Carrie, Stand by Me, and Misery. So yes the classics lol. I highly recommend you give Doctor Sleep the chance when you have the time-. . . which I’ll assume you may have considering the pandemic that’s going on recently haha, which I hope hasn’t affected your life too bad, other than not being able to go to the library. :/

Have you read the Hannibal books? Such as Red Dragon and or Silence of the Lambs? I just recently watched every film and tv adaptation of the novels and was extremely interested, they’re so far very poignant and enthralling. (I’m very excited to read them as you can tell on my profile lol)

Hey hey. <3 You may be able to guess how I stumbled along here. I love some of your favorites like Konosuba, Lain, and Berserk! I hear you read books and have a feeling you're a King fan, have you read Doctor Sleep? If so, what do you think of it? :3
