You're welcome, I hope you'll enjoy some other Macross. Plus isn't what you're looking for based on your description (it's an adult romance drama with sci-fi/military setting, there's very few battles and no comedy), as for 7 I haven't seen it yet but according to what I know about it (from other people and my experience when I skimmed through the first few episodes), this is more like what you described I think, but I haven't actually watched it so I can't say for sure. And Frontier is more like that too, but it also focuses on idols a lot (like, some idol contest is presented with equal importance as a space battle, so don't be surprised).
Btw, if you want some type of epic mecha battle anime with crazy transformations then Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann might be more up your valley, it's exactly like that.
I've watched the first one, the Do You Remember Love movie, Macross II Lovers Again, Zero, Plus and Frontier (excluding movies), so I've seen pretty much most part of the franchise. I enjoyed everything except the first one and Zero. To be honest I was planning to forget about anything Macross related after seeing that first series, but people talked me into giving it another chance saying that all parts are different and vary in quality. And I think they were right, that's why I had to make that comment. I think that finishing the first Macross before any other ones enchances the experience while watching sequels (there'll be lots of references and even one mini-parody in Frontier) and I'm glad I finished it despite being bad, but you won't miss anything important if it gets unbearable to watch and you decide to drop it. As I said, the DYRL movie doesn't have the flaws the original series had (in my opinion) and it tells a slightly different story, well you can just see it on my list but I scored the first Macross 4/10 while the movie ended up in my favs with a score of 9/10. I can't guarantee you'll like it of course, I just think it's worth trying. Macross II is a sequel to the movie and isn't part of the main franchise, it's more like an alternative timeline (alternative to Plus etc), you won't miss anything if you skip it, but I found it enjoyable despite the low score on MAL. It's more gloomy (in the main timeline you have space colonization etc, in the Macross II you just have remnants of people living on devastated Earth) and tries too hard to be like the movie, but I don't think it was bad. Macross Plus is my favorite part of the franchise so far, if you watched and liked Cowboy Bebop (not sure if your list is complete or not) you might find it enjoyable too, since they have the same director and music composer. It's better to watch the 4-part OVA version, there's also a movie version but it skips too much and the story might be confusing. Zero isn't very good, but I recommend watching it before Frontier because they're related. Frontier feels like a tribute to all the previous parts, it has tons of references so it's best to watch it last. Even though it was generally a little lacking, I found it pretty good and Shery Nome (on my profile pic) and Ranka are my favorite Macross idols. So yeah, Macross in general is a hit or miss, each part has different pros and cons and you might still love one even if you dislike another.
I've read your Macross review and tbh I agree with everything, the first series is just bad and inconsistent and I don't understand people praising it either. Though I must say, the last arc (last 12 episodes iirc) redeemed the anime a little in my eyes, I felt like it was better compared to the rest. Anyway, the main thing I wanted to say is that I recommend checking out other parts of the franchise after you finish the 1st one (or even after you drop it if you decide to do so, you can watch any without watching the previous ones), each is very different, including the alternative movie (Do You Remember Love) which corrected everything I personally disliked about the first Macross. The characters were consistent, the shory is short and to the point, the animation is great for its age and the music is catchy.
