Yeah, I saw Kubo's name prominently displayed on the new Bleach OP/ED, and something like supervisor or overseer attributed to him. I think he'll take advantage of this opportunity (and years of hindsight) to re-write or re-phrase or re-edit things exactly as he wants them to be, and I think Pierrot and the people involved in the production will give him creative license and freedom to do that. I've not read any of the manga but I like the pacing, snappiness, and dynamics of this new Bleach (so far) and it does have a noticeably darker and more adult vibe to it - compared to the previous incarnation. They're not censoring it as much or as they used to - like to make it a PG-13, anymore.
Wow. That's a really strong emotional reaction but I've heard some others saying similar things. If it had that potent an effect on you then I'm sure what's coming up in successive weeks is going to make you very happy indeed!
To requote what I wrote in the 1st episode forum: It was dynamic, action-packed, and fast-paced, and I'm pleased with the new visual style. Hopefully, they will keep it as pacey as this throughout because one of the main failings of the original series was that some of the fights were dragged out way too long and there was lots of inconsequential, albeit sometimes enjoyable, filler. I think this new series will be a lot more focused and sharp with its editing and storytelling. It was really nostalgic seeing Ikkaku and Yumichika again. I was almost expecting some slapstick, seeing those two together!
I've actually seen that first episode twice now and some of the new OST has really caught my ear and even gave me chills in parts. If such amazing and epic music is already being used then what's going to be coming up to accompany the peak and pinnacle of the really big battles and one-on-one fights? Will there be anything to top 'Treachery' in its grandeur and magnitude? Overall, it's still too early to give much opinion on the storytelling elements but I guess it's something that will build up and unravel each week as it goes on. What did you make of it?
Oh, it was also nice to see it become the number 1 rated anime - who'd have ever predicted that? Although I'm not sure how long it will last. I think there will be some haters trying their best to drag it down. Also, it was heartwarming to see such a numerous outpouring (of mostly love) in the 1st episode discussion forum. I noticed that a lot of the contributors were making their very first (or 2nd or 3rd) forum post and didn't even have a forum avatar, such was their inexperience.
Gankutsuou really is deserving of the top 4 MAL reviews giving it 10/10 scores. Even though it's from 2004 the artwork and patterns and coloring are truly sublime and the content is inspired by a classic work of literature (the 1500-page The Count of Monte Cristo novel) with lots of emotional depth and intellectual gravitas. It's an enthralling tale of betrayal, revenge, love, and loss, and there's a classiness and sophistication about it, and this is perfectly complemented by the artwork and aesthetics!
I saw you in the forums. 'We've come a long way', indeed. This coming January it will be 11 years since I bought my first Bleach DVD - season 1. It's also heartwarming to see such an outpouring of love on the MAL forum.
It's also nice to see Gankutsuou in someone's top 10. It doesn't get the love or attention it deserves!
