- Layzner (9 eps aren't subbed yet, but the summary OVAs are)
- VOTOMS (ton of OVAs, yeah, but just watch the TV series first)
- Patlabor TV (50 episode version of the first OVA, basically)
- Macross 7 (90s rock literally saves the world, fuck the haters)
- Nadesico (easy going love triangle in space, you know the drill)
- Gun x Sword (not classic, but I definitely recommend it)
- Getter OVAs (none of them are related so watch whatever whenever)
- Mazinkaiser (literally made because SRT invented the mech)
- Shin Mazinger (best thing Mazinger related ever)
- Koutetsushin Jeeg (JAM Project, explosions, y'know)
- Rokushin Gattai Godmars: The Untold Story of Seventeen
- Ideon (worth it for the absolutely stellar movie conclusion)
- SRT OG The Inspector (best way to adapt SRT ever)
- Casshern Robot Hunter (nothing that spectacular, but a worthwhile watch IMO)
not tl;dr ver:
Layzner is probably my favorite mecha series, unless it goes full retard in the last 9 unsubbed episodes, which I find highly unlikely. The OVAs summarize the show, so its perfectly fine to watch the first 29 episodes, then watch the OVAs. This is the show that IMO people are really talking about when they praise Zeta Gundam so highly. The animation is pretty much without peer for a TV series at the time it aired, the dark atmosphere is truly effective and legitimate, the characters really are people who just happened to get caught up in a war and the setting is actually a little amusing (what with the USSR having a lunar base and all) but is on par with most mecha shows of the time.
Ideon is largely boring and repetitive for most of its 39 episode run, though as you'd expect it gets quite depressing towards the end when people start dying in droves. The influences this show had on Eva are worth watching this show for alone, as you'll see them a mile away (Ideon even roars like Eva Unit 01 from time to time). But what this series has to offer is the movie conclusion, Be Invoked. It's Tomino's magnum opus and I am legitimately shocked that it isn't held in the same esteem or mentioned as often as Macross DYRL. Honestly, stuff with that kind of impact are pretty rare and I like to think of it as a movie so good that it needs 39 episodes of build-up.
VOTOMS I'm sure I don't need to sell you on, you've probably heard enough praise for it and I just wanted to say it's all true. It does start off slow, but once Chirico leaves Midgar and goes to Vietnam it gets a lot better.
Shin Mazinger is the best animated Mazinger anything ever. Halfway through it goes on its own original storyline, which you might want a little context for. Mazinkaiser's a good watch/primer and all it really is is just Mazinger doing Mazinger shit, really. JAM Project sings, shit blows up, Sayaka's tits are in full view. Yeah, literally just what you'd expect. While I'm at it, Koutetsushin Jeeg is basically the same thing, too, though it's a sequel to a wholly unwatchable series. It just kind of references it, so you should be ok, but I digress. The Mazinger Z manga's fully scanlated, too, BTW, though do know while it started before the TV series adaptation, it ran alongside it and towards the end Nagai had to shove a bunch of shit in from the show and it got really messy.
The Getter OVAs are worthwhile and they're generally agreed upon as being good, though opinions differ sometimes on some of them. My favorite is Armageddon, despite how little sense it makes (which actually IS no fault of its own; it was actually designed to be the sequel to an OVA that never came into being). Watching whichever one whenever you want is pretty much what you should, order doesn't matter here.
Godmars isn't really essential and the anime is generally agreed upon as being terrible, but the OVA the Untold Story of Seventeen was a pleasant surprise. I'm glad I gave it a chance, as while it's not exactly an award winner, it's really good for what it is. Just read a plot summary of Godmars first, or else you won't really know what's going on.
And speaking of Gaogaigar I've been told that other Brave series are better, and while I've only seen J-Decker I can safely say that Gaogaigar is the only watchable one; the rest are shameless, shallow toy commercials literally intended only for children. Gaogaigar has a legitimate staff and animation studio behind it. It's 90s Sunrise directing a mecha show, that's really all I need to say. Tekkaman Blade is FANTASTIC, but it can drag on. It's worth it 100% though. I've been told that Space Battleship Yamato and Neo Human Casshern are good stuff, haven't watched them myself. There are some recommendation charts floating around out there, too, these are just my personal recommendation.
That's all.
how is that anyway? it's been chilling on my external since time immemorial.
I'll see if I can find some Japanese sites with a load of info, and maybe we can do something with that.
However, I was able to find Ogre Battle Gaiden a few minutes ago, and it seems to emulate well enough, assuming we're talking about the NGC game. After poking around for a bit, I was able to find a site with some "translations," but it looks like someone just took the script and rammed it through Babelfish, or something.
Going off on a tangent, have you ever added a manga title to your list and found you were one of a handful of people who have heard of the title. So far it's only happened to me once: http://myanimelist.net/manga/20448/Kyou_no_Hayakawa_San
