Yeah, it was a serious story.
The author of LN wrote it as a serious one. Studio Madhouse made it as a serious anime based on the LN. And the voice actors performed it very well as a serious anime. Everyone concerned made Mahou Sensou as a serious type of work. However, it was not only a shitty anime but also a great hilarious one. It was a miracle that MS was funnier than all comedy animes. I had never seen an anime like MS. And maybe, it never happens in the future.

In Japan, many anime fans become sad now because we cannot find a new one like it in this season.

A little help for you. This is how we, Japanese, could enjoy Mahou Sensou.

At the First, about Mahou Sensou, it is needed to know that the all conversations were not connected each other well although the characters spoke in perfect Japanese. And the points that many fans in Japan laughed at in Mahou Sensou EP 1 and EP 2 are following:

[EP 1]
(1) The names of the brothers: The naming way was insane. lol.
(2) A mysterious motorcycle: It is not revealed forever.
(3) Takeshi and Mui in a school infirmary: It was a decrepit situation in many anime, many manga and many LN. But all conversations in there were not linked each other completely although they spoke in correct Japanese. lol. Moreover, he was not afraid of her gun and her firing. However he was surprised at the smoke. lol.
(4) The first battle: This was epic. Takeshi's kendo pose was perfectly wrong although he was set as a rank holder of kendo. lol. And he fought with the bamboo sword against the man with the iron sword. Why He could? lol. Japanese persons who want a serious anime dropped MS at this time.
(5) The second battle: The bees man said, "If a wizard attacks with magic power against other wizard in this world, he would be eliminated." Ten seconds later, he attacked with magic power against a wizard, and he was eliminated. lol. Nice joke.
(6) In the last scene: Takeshi said, "I will go anywhere, even though hell."

[EP2 ]
(1) The first scene: Takeshi said: "Is here safe?" lol. His words turned completely from the last scene of EP 1 .
(2) The explanations about the magic system: But it was unnecessary forever.
(3) "Last Requiem": We, Japanese, always think this way of naming is the worst thing. We think a such name is ugly in Japanese.
(4) The legendary sword, Twilight: Can you imagine that the Excalibur of the King Arthur was left in a small shop in your high school? lol.
(5) The salesperson in the shop: He looked like an old soldier. His behavior and his voice were solemn, but his diction in Japanese was just like a scatterbrain. lol.
(6) The teacher, Violet killed wizards all in the church: But the explanation about that was forever missed.
(7) Violet and Washizu: They got in the car. And they transferred by a magic circle with the car. The car was unnecessary. lol

And the story continued to EP 3, about a love comedy in the high school... What? lol.
I couldn't help laughing at them above.

Because Mahou Sensou is the legendary masterpiece in this decade or in this century. Yeah, I know your feelings. I understand why many people on MAL got angry about it. Indeed, it was a shitty anime.
But it was very hilarious. It was funnier than all comedy anime, although they made a serious anime seriously. This is not a joke. I could laugh loud at every episode, every scene and every minute. Many fans in Japan, same as I, could laugh about it.

At the final EP, fans on MAL thought, "What is going on? Fxxx! Fxxx!"
But fans in Japan thought, "Yes!! It flew beyond our expectation. lollollollol"

In Japan, the man who got angry about the final episode, is regarded as a stupid. Because that disaster could be forecasted in the first 15 min of EP 1. Perhaps, I guess many hilarious points was lost in the translations or in the difference of the culture. And then many fans on MAL watched it seriously as a serious anime. It was a misfortune.

For example: In the first scene of EP 1, The names of MC brothers were insane.
Imagine if Jones family has two boys. One boy is Tom Jones, but another boy is named IamtheMoonlight Jones. What was happened about parents? lol

And unlimited points were still there.
