If I have to read a novel to know what's going on or why things suck now but will be better later, then the anime is shit, period. The anime should be self contained and GOOD.

Also, you'd have to be braindead to think that wading through mutliple boring episodes magically becomes meaningful if later episodes will be good. All this bullshit could have been compressed into one episode or skipped entirely and we wouldn't miss a single important plot point.
