Pretty lackluster male and female lists ngl. While the elaborations of how well-written a character is are good, the placements are kinda stupid. I can't tell if most picks below number 10 are mostly A-tier for the female character list.

A bit of an interruption to you and perhaps you're inactive on this site but, may I ask a question?

Opinions on these genres?

Slice of life, psychological, and action.

It's fine if I don't receive feedback.

Greetings toncue12,
I was looking at people who posted halfway season reviews because at the Anime Guild is currently looking to create a reviewer community.
I saw that you were a member of the club so I just thought I'd bring the thread to your attention =) - http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1478090

Hey, glad you enjoyed it and didn't take anything I said the wrong way; I try to be careful about that because some people can be really touchy and the tone of text-based communication can be easily misunderstood.

Yeah, I think that our 1% positive affinity (which I think would have been a 50% or so by the old system, before they brought in positive and negative sides) is mainly because you're more strict in your scores than I am. We do seem to share similar tastes when it comes to certain things. Aside from all the things we already have in common, there are some favorites of yours that I've really been meaning to watch/finish/rewatch:
-Steins;Gate: I originally tried to watch Chaos;Head first, but couldn't get past the first episode. But I've heard great things about Steins;Gate and that watching Chaos;Head isn't really necessary to enjoy it. I really need to get around to seeing it.
-Kara no Kyoukai: Again, heard great things; have had it all downloaded pretty much since the last movie's release. Should watch it some day.
-Ergo Proxy: Need to give this show another shot. I watched the first episode a long time ago when I was sampling a bunch of stuff; didn't grab me right away but I've heard really good things.
-Wolf's Rain: The only thing other than Death Note that I have scored lower than you did. It has been forever since I've watched this. I actually watched it as I bought the individual DVDs as they were being released in the US, so it's been over 10 years since I've seen it. Also, I think I've only ever watched it in English and watching in 4-episode spurts may have damaged the pacing for me a bit. Maybe it's better marathoned? I keep hearing great things about it, so I think it deserves a rewatch to see if I've underrated it.
And no, I haven't had a chance to read the original Higurashi VNs. I think I've had fan translations and pirated copies of at least most of it downloaded before it was licensed, then I was going to get the official English release eventually but haven't yet. I had bought the first 14 volumes of the manga version, but only ever got around to reading the first Chapter's worth (first two volumes). I'm ready to give up on the manga, though. It's just too long (I'm only about half way through buying it since it's 26 volumes long, plus at least one side story volume) and the books take up a lot of shelf space. I think I'll sell what I have, get the VNs eventually, and maybe get back to reading the manga online if I ever have the time. I love Higurashi (it's my second favorite anime series of all time; third if you include manga in that equation, YKK is amazing to me), but man there's so much stuff to it, especially if you start getting into Umineko as well.... So that was well over 400 words to respond to a 30-word section of your comment (yes, I checked in Word); see how long I can write when you get me going? =P

Anyway, so that's an interesting evaluation of Naho's character. It kind of feels like you're describing Bella from the Twilight series for a lot of that. XD As far as the "she's boring, why are these two guys falling for her" thing, I think you underestimate the ability for some (maybe even most) guys to be attracted to a quite, relatively-cute, somewhat-mysterious girl. Yeah, she's kind of boring, but she does give off an air of having more personally below the surface, at least to me and apparently also to Suwa and Kakeru.... I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but making assumptions based on what you've said, I'd say you as a person would be very similar to Hagita: not interested in Naho at all and mostly just along for the ride in the group because it's kind of just something to do in the background and a way to be around at least some people; nose usually in a book, then it's like, "Oh, we're going somewhere now? Okay." Anyway, we're mostly talking about Naho here. I just don't really see the same malice as you do concerning her actions. I mean, wow, one of the worst characters ever coming from someone who has watched Death Note? (Haha, sorry to bring that back up, but I really kind of have issues with that series. Well, at least you haven't watched School Days yet, because if you had and then ever say that ANY other character from ANY other series is "one of the worst" without giving a mention of those pieces of shit, I'd honestly have to fight the urge to slap you. Anyway, that was a big sidetrack....) So Naho comes off as having a little bit of a god complex because she has a magic letter and is trying to save the life of a boy she has a crush on? Really, I think you're expecting a little too much from a high school girl here. I think the problem is that in anime we tend to get accustomed to young people being put in adult situations and actually work through them like mature, mostly-ethical people. These are kids in their second year of high school, 16 or 17 years old. They don't exactly have the life experience to make perfect choices. In fact, this is within the time period that it's most acceptable to make bad choices and that's kind of the concept behind the entire story. And as far as Naho's older self goes, I also don't really see her as being a horrible person there either. People in their mid-to-late 20s tend to have regrets about their earlier life. She's around her old friends for the first time in years and talking about a dear, dead friend who they now realize may have died a very preventable death. Yes, she seems to be a more-or-less happily married mother, but that doesn't mean she can't wish things could have been different. Personally, I'm in my early 30s and I'm happily married as well. However, I was extremely shy when I was younger. When I was in between my first and second year to college, I was developing a relationship with a girl who was almost my first girlfriend, but nervous inexperience prevented me from getting very far with her. Although we hung out a few times, we never officially started dating. It was one of the most awkward experiences of my life. Again, although I am happily married, I regret how things went down with her and I wonder what would have become of the relationship if I didn't hesitate as much. That doesn't mean I wish to undo my marriage or that I'm unhappy with how things eventually turned out; it's just an undeniable regret. The relationship with her might have lasted, but it just as likely wouldn't have gone very far, maybe not even beyond a few months (I was going back to college after all). And that's with my almost-girlfriend NOT killing herself at some point. So yeah, I am able to relate to Naho's feelings, present and future, quite a bit. Does that make me a horrible person or someone with bad taste in girls? I don't know. And I also don't think it's that weird for Kakeru to develop real feelings for her. They have had at least one very important conversation beyond hello/goodbye: Kakeru found Naho to be easy enough to talk to that he opened up to her about his mother killing herself and Naho didn't completely freak out in response; that was likely very comforting to Kakeru. They have also had discussions about being true to yourself, speaking your mind and to go for what you really want; these things may seem kind of insignificant and cliche to us, but that kind of stuff can mean the world to high school kids. And hey! Don't stop short on my account with your discussion of the characters! I'm talking your ear off (figuratively speaking), so feel free to do the same if you have the time.

I'm not entirely sure how much more "interesting" the series might get for you, considering your impressions so far. It definitely gets more complicated, that's for sure. But I'm not sure if you'll end up liking the series more or less as it goes on. But yeah, if you want to put the discussion on hold until you finish the series (or at least until you see the next episode), feel free to do so. I'm enjoying the discussion, though!

Wow, I've never had anyone go straight to sending me a friend request when I randomly make a profile comment! Usually someone will just make a stupid and dismissive comment back to me. *mostly joking*

Anyway, thanks for the friend request! I'll take it as an indication that you enjoyed reading what I wrote? Feel free to comment back if you want and see you around! ^_^

Hi! I probably shouldn't make random comments based off of the "Latest Anime Reviews" section of my Panel, but I get bored sometimes. And hey, negative or positive, I always appreciate it when someone acknowledges that they've read something that I wrote, so I figure others may feel the same way.... (Oh, and forewarning, I tend to write a LOT when I talk about thinks that I feel are important/fun enough to write about, so yeah, good on you if you actually find the time to read this all.)

So yeah, your Orange review. XD

I wasn't originally going to comment about it, but then I was too amused by your exchange with AyumiChii about the same subject to NOT also talk about it. Also, I found it amusing that we literally have exactly 1% positive anime affinity with each other (at the time of writing this). Don't worry, I didn't get "angry" at your review. That seems like a very illogical reaction to a review. I mean, I could disagree or think a review is stupid or think the reviewer missed the point, but to be mad at it? Well, there was one review that I read that annoyed me a bit on a personal level, but that was mainly because I was a little jealous of the reviewer and irritated that he went to go see a movie that I really wanted to see but wasn't able to, yet he went to the movie nearly 100% certain that he wasn't going to like it (if you care to know, the review I'm talking about is this one for Kizumonogatari I). Anyway, the point being, different people have different tastes and will therefore have different feelings about different pieces of entertainment.

So about your review. I do find the structure of the review to be interesting, if not a bit overly simplistic. The bullet points look more like a work-in-progress/outline than an actual review. Granted, you admit that the review will be updated in the future, so I guess that's passable. I looked at your other reviews and while they also include the same bullet-point format, they also include a paragraph or so to start off which does help.

As far as the bullet points' actual content in the current review, some of them do confuse me a bit and almost seem to be a little contradictory. And just to let you know, like AyumiChii, I've also read the original manga and absolutely loved it, so yeah, a little bias here:

-The first point says, "Pacing seems to be mastered. (1/2)" Is this a grade purely for the pacing of the show? If so, it seems kind of odd that you say it's "mastered", but only give it half points. Looking at this and your other reviews, what would it take for a show to get full points (or even a 1.5) for pacing from you?

-The "Complexity" rating just seems odd, especially considering that it gets the same amount of points as "Pacing" even though you bash it pretty hard. Although I don't really think having a "complex story" is really that much of the point, but again, I guess that's why you didn't just give it a zero which is where I would have thought you'd go.

-"Plausibility".... I looked at your other reviews and I still don't quite fully understand this section. Where exactly does plausibility fit when judging a fictional story? Obviously anything with sci-fi/fantasy elements wouldn't really be plausible in reality, so is this just a score judging how plausible the situations seem in the context of the world? Really this and its associated criticism about the characters (I'll go ahead and roll that "part" of your review into this bullet's discussion) is the only thing about your review that I had real heavy disagreement with. I really don't understand your determination that the characters are illogical/irrational. I guess since you don't really elaborate on those points it can't really be helped, but just trying to twist my head around and think about how the characters can be perceived as such, I don't really see it. Was it because Naho went ahead and went along with inviting Kakeru on their walk home even though the letter told her not to? I mean, the letter's authenticity was still in question at the time and she's a very introverted/shy/passive person anyway, so I don't think that situation can really be held against her. And when it comes to situations after the letter's predictions are confirmed to be true, it's really a situation of her character type. Again, she's a shy and passive person. If you can't personally relate to that personality type, let me tell you, the actions of such people may seem illogical, but they are actually a character flaw. If I sent a Road Map To Success to myself 10 to 15 years ago, when I was between the ages of 15 and 22, telling myself better ways to handle key events in my life, it would not matter if the future-knowing aspects of the letter were confirmed; if the letter told that-me to do something completely out of character, like ask out a girl I had a crush on or stand up for a friend that I let down in the past, I'd probably fail to act on at least 60% of those life-changing opportunities. It's not a failure in logic; it's a failure in determination and will. Again, if you mean something completely different, then sorry, but I don't really have much to go on here so I can only assume and try to figure things out. PS: Can I just say that for some reason I completely despise the use of the MC abbreviation? I'm not entirely sure why; maybe it just seems really unprofessional and lazy? Can't you use the name of the characters or say primary cast or something instead? I have the same feelings about the OC, original character, abbreviation in fandom, but I think that largely has to do with the practice of making original characters for established properties in the first place. (Man, that was a really long response to that bullet, but I guess it included multiple bullets, so that's fine, right?)

-Pretty much all of the technical judgments are largely a matter of taste and preference and how strict you'd want to criticize production values. But personally, I think this is one of the best looking shows I've seen in a while. Hype for the production values leading up to the premiere of the anime was actually one of the main things that attracted me to the series in the first place and lead me to read the manga in anticipation. I really don't think the series failed to deliver on said hype. I don't really understand the criticism of the character designs as "generic". I mean, it's primarily a series that takes place at a school with uniforms; how creative do you really expect them to be? I felt that they were clean and did a great job of giving each character a distinct look and personality and the 10-years-later versions of the characters did a very good job of aging the primary cast.

-I actually had to Google "staging" and I think I can mostly agree there. It does get a bit odd at times.

-"Rewatchability".... Yeah, I know you haven't given a real grade to this yet, but I did want to say that I personally find Orange amazing as I am essentially rewatching it, as someone who already read the manga. Now, you may-or-may-not feel this way after you're done with it as the series doesn't seem to be 100% your cup of tea, but I think knowing what happens later actually enhances the story as long as you connect with it the first time around. I think that's what AyumiChii was trying to get at, albeit in a less articulate way. Honestly, I actually hate it when people make the "Oh, you haven't read/watched/played the original work so you don't understand the whole story! Your opinion is therefore invalid!!!" argument, or the "It gets better so stick through the first 3 to 15 boring episodes!" argument for that matter. You and other people have every right to judge a work of art by its own, individual merits and are also free to provide an opinion on a show that doesn't touch them within the first few episodes.

Anyway, that's probably about enough of that. Yeah, I'm probably one of those people who "give high ratings too easily" as you mentioned to AyumiChii, but I really just love anime and have very broad tastes and don't really have a very critical mind (hence I still haven't written a single formal review on here). I do find it funny though when I come across a user that rates things more strictly and they almost ALWAYS have a higher rating of the Death Note anime than I do. Man, it's hard for me to see what people love so much about that series: Crap characters and probably the worst "Rewatchability" I've ever experienced (in my opinion). And trying not to bash AyumiChii too much, but really, it seems weird for someone who has not scored a single thing on her list to criticize someone else's scores. I mean, you can't even judge her tastes overall to see where she's coming from in that regard. Maybe you could look at her list and find some common ground and find other things that helps you realize why you disagree on Orange, but alas, you can't. Well, good luck with watching the rest of Orange! I hope you're able to get into it, but if it doesn't end up being your thing, no harm in that! Good day to you!
ayumiis Jul 18, 2016 5:19 AM
ohoho, do you know what mangá is? if it wasnt' the manga i wouldn't put the anime as one of my favourites now of course, because as i said the story is still in development in the anime.
But in this case i already know what is going to happen ;)
And no, it isn't hypocritical. Tbh you really ofended me now ._. I only said my opinion about your opinion tho. So.. hm, can't I say what I think? You're not the only one that can say what wants because liberty exists.
And i wasn't rude with you, i only said that giving a 4 to an anime that only started airing only awhile ago is stupid, making a review without even see what the anime has to show to the people is just sad.
ayumiis Jul 17, 2016 7:04 PM
Your Orange review is so asdfvgb i was REALLY angry reading it.
You need to see the whole anime before making a review you know, why do you not wait? The story and characters are still in development.. Giving it a 4 is really sad, i'm just leting you know..
Cyborg_Dragon Jul 7, 2016 12:08 PM
I liked your Tokyo Ghoul Root A review, You took a good approach to describing the problems the show had. The show is kind of an example of what people who read the Manga see to people who watched the Anime see where one can see it as a disgrace and the other sees it as brilliance.
