To be fair, I will say DBZ was a childhood favorite. However, that was back when seeing screaming and macho fighting was enough to satisfy a kid's heart.
The storyline is rather weak though, especially with the filler clogging it up.
Speaking of which
The FILLER IS HORRIFIC.
The occasional plot twists aren't exactly suspenseful
The worst part is how fights get stall to the point where the antagonists often can make a comeback with some tactical plotting.
Also, the dumb decisions made by the heroes lead to the villains living longer and getting stronger than necessary. Sometimes it really makes you think would you actually trust these men to save the world?
A more subtle issue is consistency of power levels. While it makes sense that the characters are getting stronger, the power of the attacks hitting a threshold and then resetting does not. A Kamehameha wave, a popular move in the anime, fluctuates in power over the course of the story even when the same character is using it. What could once destroy a hill can the destroy a whole city then a planet then back to just a mountain.
Holding back that power would only reinforce my point earlier of stalling out a fight.
At the end of the day,
the action is still amazing. It's an anime worthy a try albeit skipping all the filler. In fact, I suggest you try Dragon Ball Z Kai, a new, improved filler free version of the original.
DB in general is all about screaming to increase your power level; I've never even added it into my list since I don't remember liking it, admittedly it's one of the 'big 5' along with Naruto, Fairy Tale, Bleach and One Piece but I'd say, story-wise it's the worst of them all. Dragon Ball Z is just scream, fight, filler mid-way, scream a bit more and the death of everyones beloved Krillin dies, then they visit the dragon and revive him; it's not interesting but it probably has the best and longest fights, but that doesn't make the show "8.26" rating worthy like you say; it's mediocre at best but it's long running from 1986 proves it pleases the fans, a lot.
Your review was lacking depth but it got to the point quickly, good job.
