My Rating System
Ratings aren't determined by some convoluted number crunching system that adds up story, animation, etc. They are an individual number that represents both how much good the show did and how much personal value it holds towards me. Also note that my thoughts on a show can extend beyond the rating I give it and just because I give a show a 5 or 4/6 doesn't always mean I didn't enjoy it/a totally solid show. Ratings can change at my discretion (usually if thoughts change) and are meant to reflect the most recent time that I watched the show.
Also I don't give manga scores since I'm too lazy to bother thinking about what scores I'd give and I only really read manga I know I'll enjoy.
Masterful (10) - The best that anime has ever offered to me. These are shows that not only excel at being well-rounded and tightly executed but ones that hold a lot of personal value to me as well. This rating doesn't mean that I find a show to be perfect but rather it does the most right in my eyes. These are shows that I can always go back to and still have the same fondness towards them. All of my 10/10's can be found on my favorites list below. Ranking: S-tier Note: Any show that appears on my favorites list represents the series as a whole (ex. JoJo) regardless of what ratings I give other seasons
Exemplary (9) - A tightly woven show that is also among my favorite anime. Shows that have a lot of admirable aspects and go beyond what is expected out of worthwhile experience. These are the shows that in my eyes demonstrate anime at its finest. Not as much personal value as a 10 but still something I can see myself going back to and holding positive feelings towards in the years to come. Ranking: A-tier
Great (8) - The ambitious shows that take extra steps to stand out from other anime out there. These are shows that not only achieve what they set out to do but excel at what they do. These are shows that use all of their elements to the fullest and some of them can even be considered essentials within their particular genres. While I'm not personally attached to any of these shows they are still shows I'd watch again and recommend to people. Ranking: A-tier and B-tier
Good (7) - Solid shows that push themselves towards being a bit more than a worthwhile watch. These are shows that have a few moments of brilliance and have a lot of impressive feats going for them. Overall I had a good time watching these shows but there was something a little more to them. A show that I'd go back to every now and then if infrequently but still can recommend. Ranking: B-tier
Decent (6) - Enjoyable shows that have their merits and function well to say the least. Worthwhile shows that I just don't feel too strongly about. These can be shows that while I can appreciate what they do, I still feel kind of indifferent towards their achievements. Can also be shows that I enjoyed a lot but feel as if the flaws are way too glaring for me to look over them. Wouldn't be the first to come to mind when it comes to recommendations and not something I would go out of my way to watch again. Ranking: C-tier
Average (5) - Shows that I have no strong feelings towards, or shows where my positive and negative feelings balance each other out. Shows with this rating have a lot going for them and there are even aspects of these shows that I genuinely like. However they are bogged down by things that keep me from liking them more. Not as enjoyable as I wanted them to be, characters weren't very memorable, story had a lot of problems. By no means are these bad shows but shows that aren't as grounded as they could have been. Not really recommendable or worth watching again. Ranking: D-tier
Mediocre (4) - Shows that aren't really bad but are plagued by too many shortcomings for me to consider them simply average. These are shows where the faults are too noticeable for me to ignore them and even fail in some respects such as having characters I don't like much, poorly executed ideas and narrative, general annoyance, or being plain boring. That said shows with this rating can still have elements that I like. However in spite of the few positives they might have I would never recommend these shows or go back and watch them again. I want to like these shows but I'm just not feeling them. Ranking: E-tier
Bad (3) - Boring shows that offer little to me as entertainment and are ultimately disposable. There may be something I can praise about them here and there but ultimately most of what I'd have to say about these shows is negative. May not be a painful experience all together but these really aren't too enjoyable or the enjoyment comes from the wrong places. There's probably some other show out there I'd recommend that does what these shows do but better and watching them once is all I really need. Ranking: F-tier
Awful (2) - Beyond salvageable with little to no redeeming qualities. There is really nothing good I can say about shows with this rating. This is when anime comes boring and infuriating for me to watch, lacks any sort of memorable characters, and constantly fails at everything it tries to do. There may be one small moment, idea, or character that I like but nothing that can save the show. These are the shows that were shat out just to make a quick buck. A waste of time I wish I never watched and no one should ever be subjected to. Ranking: I don't even care at this point lol
Atrocity (1) - The LJN-tier of anime. Nothing even matters at this point because there is nothing that I like about these shows. When I think of the worst anime these are the shows that immediately spring to mind and represent everything that can go wrong. Either that or these shows are so unbelievably bland that they may as well be nothing. If only I could erase them from existence.... Ranking: Z-tier
TL;DR Version
10 - 7: I liked it
6 - 5: Enjoyable but could be better
4: No strong like or dislike
3 - 1: I didn't like it
Ratings for Specials/Extra OVAs/Etc.
7 - Actually add something to the show and are worth seeking out if you really want to be invested in the show. Recommended for anyone watching these shows who want the full experience.
6 - Enjoyable and worth watching if you're invested enough but don't add much the show outside of entertainment. Worth giving a shot especially if you want to see more of a show.
5- The typical "special", can be fun and entertaining and there's nothing wrong with it but it's not really a must-see unless you are really invested in the show or a completionist. For shows I like they're usually not of the same quality as a normal episode or are usually forgettable in comparision.
4 - Mostly "fanservice" and specials that exist for the sake of being specials. Not really bad but usually forgettable and don't add anything to the show. Only for those who are obsessed or have nothing better to do.
3 and below - Actually have a negative impact on the show and can even dampen the viewing experience. Either that or they are completely pointless and might as well not exist. Not even worth watching even if you are the biggest fan of the show. Note: If I give a special for a show a significantly lower rating than the show itself that doesn't mean the special dampened my experience with the show or makes me like it less. Conversely if I give a special a higher rating than the show itself that doesn't think I think more highly of the show because of it. My ratings on the specials are based on what I think they add to the experience rather than their overall quality.
No Score (N/A) - No score is given in the following situations...
1. Shows I need to reassess my score on either because I haven't watched them in a long time or feel like I'd like them more upon rewatch
2. Omakes and other specials or extras that don't really warrant being rated individually
3. That Sonic OVA that is literally on my list as filler
4. Rinne no Lagrange because no rating can ever summarize how that show is absolute perfection that all anime should strive to be like!
