Like to watch anime occasionally. I love things with any of the following: social/moral implications, good story, good character development, romance, sci-fi. I also like the yuri/shoujo-ai genre, as well as yaoi/shounen-ai. I prefer the more serious stuff, or at least the ones that take themselves seriously.
I am kind of rigid when it comes to rating things, and I don't want to clutter up my sidebar with a bunch of favorites (and some of these aren't even "favorites") so I am making a list of "impactful" media/things.
Anime:
Mononoke Hime
Ghost in the Shell
Shinsekai Yori
Kannazuki no Miko
Aoi Hana
Simoun
Ga-Rei: Zero
Free!
Manga:
Aoi Hana
Octave
Notes From the Garden of Lilies
Cat's Eye Hall (Chapter 1: Yuri Double Suicide)
Indigo Blue
Free Soul
My Rating System
I judge and rate shows based (very broadly) on three things. #1 Story or the ideas behind the show (this includes plot, character development, romance, etc) #2 Production value (self explanatory, and by far the least important) #3 critical impact of the story (social/moral implications pertaining to the plot, visuals, characters, etc that make you think about things in your everyday life; either yourself or the world around you. I also consider deep emotional impact to be a part of #3). In order of importance for rating: 3>1>2.
1-3: You don't really deserve mention in my life at all. If I didn't drop it, that is a surprise. Variations in score (1's, 2's, or 3's) just let me differentiate between which one is worse.
4-5: The show tried hard. It either had a great idea, but failed to achieve production value that made it watchable.... or it had great production value but absolutely no cohesive/rational/enjoyable story or idea.
6: The show had (at least) a good #1, and had the production value. This category is (generally) reserved for media that I like, but personally find no reason to watch/read again, and have no application in my life. These are ones that I can sit down to watch/read, enjoy them, and then forget about them forever.
7: The show had (at least) good production value, good story, but achieved #3. Either it was emotionally worthy or had moral implications. This category is for the shows that are good in my 3 big categories, but they didn't go far enough in #3.
8: This rating is reserved for shows that achieved #2, and had a great story. These shows have such excellent #1 that they deserve a place of honor in anyone's collection. They don't make the cut for #3 though, as they didn't make me think critically about the show, or the emotional impact on myself was limited.
9-10: Masterpieces, no matter what anyone else says. These shows have good #2, great #1, and achieved at least a moderate level of #3. They either had profound emotional impact, or they made me think critically about the story. The difference in scores (9's vs. 10's) simply lets me differentiate between which ones I thought did it better. Both 9's and 10's are irrevocably ingrained in my mind, and are at the zenith of entertainment that either pulls at your heart without remorse, or has a critical element.
I would like to point out something very important. The only media I have come across that I feel comfortable rating a 10 is Free Soul. It is a same sex romance that has a ton of themes and is very well written. I suggest it highly, no matter if you like the genre or not.
Note: There will be times when I bump something up on my list purely because of enjoyment, these are shows that don't really exceed in any of my three categories but I was able to get lost in the media.
Note: I also might bump something down even though it had moderate levels of all 3 categories. This generally happens when I rate something an 8 (when it had good #1, #2, and #3) purely because I don't think it is on the same level as the media that I confidently place in my 9-10 category.
Note: If a show is really insulting or offensive, I will rate it below what I might rate it otherwise. This might happen if I think the media's morals are super screwed up, or if there is sexism or racism (or other prejudices, there are many types). Another reason might be because I find the show offensive in the way it treats younger characters as sexual objects, or if there is excessive fanservice.

Aha, I would certainly add that to my PTW list - I do hope it suits my tastes haha. And I don't know if you have watched this anime or not but "Shigurui" despite being very violent and containing some nudity (not for the sake of fan service) is an amazing story. I do like it a lot. And good char development.
Well, I might adopt a similar strategy as well, since yea - it gives more freedom to rate animes above 5. I hope you like it more haha!
Hmm, it does make sense that Dominura basically left off to another time line - another dimension and the effects of her transportation don't affect the previous events... OR she and her partner (forgot the name) were the first two priestesses who taught the use of the Simoun... and the other interpretation seems reasonable in its own way...
Well the sad part... yes, it did make me analyze the anime, it made me think about the conclusion more than had it been a happy ending. the reason why I am thinking over such a complex anime (It WAS a very complex anime :D ) is partially due to the ending... HOWEVER, it is not an anime I can rewatch again and again...
The hype part does make me understand the low rating... I was disappointed by quite a few animes with hype as well. And I suppose my rating system is different - I think I should actually reconsider the anime rating I give - for me 7 is enjoyable but impactful - say with considerable flaws. 5 for me is something I won't recommend and probably not remember and other people give that a 2 or 3 for that or even a 1. So I think I should analyze my own rating system however you should watch it again. :D
Well... I replied later... so... yea ^^; lol. Well the anime never got as popular as it should have had I suppose :(
Hmmmmmm... are you talking about another time dimension, another parallel universe or another universe totally? :D and well there are many things to discuss but I suppose that without the anime fresh in your mind it will be hard to answer haha. I don't really know if I'd like to see it again though... its end... left me sad. Somehow being part of a huge adventure and then floating away leaves me feeling that way. Cowboy Bebop ended similarly (the entire group falling apart) however I am glad about Outlaw Star... wait, I hope I am not giving any spoilers XD
I also wonder why the Highlander Priestess was alive that flew the ancient Simoun D: that doesn't make sense!
I do wonder on what basis you give rating... I mean you gave Spirited Away, Nausicca of the Valley of the wind and Howls Moving Castle, all low ratings. I think 6 is low haha - at least for the first title :'(
I do find it very open ended however I am fine with them not going in detail of the helical motors or the Gods... just the issue is time paradox - if Dominura was the one that spread the knowledge of Simoun - how was that possible if she was born later on and went BACK in time through the very means that SHE taught in the past... it is the same as saying I am my own grandfather... because I went back in time to father my son who in essence is my father.
