I do think the rape scene is a bit stupid, while I can see him gain sexual desire and try to rape that church girl it was executed very poorly.
Also its a lot more believable at least to me that they are enthusiastic, remember mostly everyone there is an old man at the end of their lives so they most certainly don't want to be ridiculed by society which would explain them being incompetent, as time progresses(Lhadatt getting the motivation for his dream from that girl) they start getting enthusiastic especially after the death of the lead engineer and they believe they can find a new world for humanity in space(Gundam also did this but executed it a little bit better, I do think this is a flaw that the movie has), the characters are extremely believable other than that stupid rape thing.
With that old woman(who was actually revealed to be a man in one of the frames) his friend tells him to hide while he went to look for help his friend didn't abandon him.
While I do think it has some plot holes, I find it to be a very underappreciated film.
