December 31st, 2020 I determined that my range of anime was quite narrow and that I wanted to expand my repertoire and experience a greater variety of different genres and aspects of anime.
And that is when the idea of the "Top 100 Challenge" was born. The challenge was rather simple:
"Watch all top 100 anime on MAL (as noted down at the start of the year).
If one of the top 100 entries is a sequel in a franchise, then all prequels must also be watched".
On paper I thought this would be easy! I had already seen 23 of the top 100 anime, so I only had to watch 77 anime in 365 days. A bunch of them are movies and there are very few long anime, I'll breeze through this challenge!
Narrator: He did in fact not breeze through the challenge.
This particular clause of the challenge would become my undoing: "If an anime is a sequel, then all prequels must also be watched."
Although I only had to watch 77 anime from the top 100 list, I also had to watch *35 anime* that were prequel seasons alone!
Its a genuine miracle that I completed this challenge. On average I had to COMPLETE an anime every 3rd day (!!!) for the entire year to actually pull it off (and mind you I didn't even mention any of the seasonals and additonal anime I stupidly watched on top of the challenge).
As a point of reference, I watched all *148 episodes* of Hunter x Hunter in less than 6 days. (This shouldn't have been possible, thanks covid)
A combination of Covid and friends struggling to adapt to online life meant I was very bored and had alot of time. Without Covid I would never have pulled this off. I suppose I should thank the random chinese guy for snacking on a bat?
