"what is the point of setting this show in Italy with Italian characters if you're just going to have them practice normal Japanese customs? Yes, I'm sure this is nitpicky but I'm not the only one asking this question. "
I want to point out that you are right, but it is certainly NOT being nitpicky. If anything, this is about the very central aspect of the anime: Florence at the time of Caravaggio. This is far from being a nitpick to the point where i can tell this is the very reason why i didn't watch 'Arte' and why i dropped some other stuff episode 1 or trashed hard many others. 'Arte' is about Italy, but as a french, i am always horrified to the point of disgust by the pretention of so many japanese authors who feel like writing about Europe without EVER taking 3 minutes to learn about what they are talking about. It is almost always so horribly handled, so inept and oftentimes, so full of nasty clichés that it becomes downright insulting on top of being unsufferably dumb. This is without even considering how they butcher everything remotely tied to France or Italy, or anything that is not Japan (except for China for some reason), or how they rape french historical figures like Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) in countless medias, and stuff like that. What you are pointing out is actually one of the 3 major flaws of Japanese animation to me. More than a flaw... It is in-built impending disaster.
I have only found a few animes that do this right. Like "Junketsu no Maria", "BECK", or "Honzuki Gekokujou". When i find one, i always feel like seeing a miracle, and all of them are really worth a watch. So, in the end, what you call a nitpick is actually a major criteria for me. Animes that do it right are consistently good, animes that don't are consistently poor. I haven't seen a single exception to this rule as of yet. In the end, it is all about whether the author is competent or not.
Will Arte give in to the stereotypes of a patriarchal society and let a MAN pull a heavy cart for her, or will she just suffer a painful lifelong spinal injury so she can maintain her feminist pride? More importantly, who cares?
