I'm glad you enjoyed Overlord, I had a great time watching it myself and i'm going to be looking forward to more. But if i can't wait i'll probably do the same thing and get my hands on some Manga or Light Novels. xD
I would absolutely recommend Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice and Wolf). If you enjoy English Dubbed then i also recommend watching it in dubbed because i had a great experience with that. Things you should know is that the Anime itself is at a slow pace and there isn't that much action going on, rather it focuses on economics in the 13th century (could be wrong about the time) and a slice of life relationship between a travelling merchant and a wolf goddess that takes the form of a young pretty girl. There may or may not be some romantic interest but i won't go and spoil anything. =)
If you choose to watch Spice and Wolf and give it a shot when you feel like watching a slow pace anime then you won't be let down!
I hope you enjoy it as i did, Thanks for reading!

About LH a normal game I don't know but they somehow stuck in it after an update, aren't they? so it must be/became a VR one.
about the novels I plan to read them but after the end of the 2nd season cause I don't want to spoil anything I know the novel is most of times way better than the anime adaptations but I enjoy the anime more than the novels because of the terrible english I have.
Ken je van Japans les enzo ;)
Anime power in Groningen m/
besides i really want to be helpful of some way, so I don't want to give wrong info.
I really appreciated your reply btw!
Thanks for letting me know about the novels; I like reading so I might take a look :D
See ya! :D
I really thought it was set in a MMORPG World though!
I will delete it the rec then!
Thanks for notifying :D
You must be really bad at understanding things if you still don't get it after these explanations.
Ratings are simply a way to compare a work to the average works of that medium in the same genre. How close or how far are they are from the average a.k.a. "the standard" the "5"
Below 5 are works worse than the standard and above 5 are works better than the current standard.
If let's say there would be only 3 anime on the planet rating stuff would not be possible because there would be no "standard" and rating is all about comparing stuff to the standard.
Just like how there are not enough horror in the medium of anime to make a standard so you can't really compare or rate the actual few horror anime that do exist.
Also even if we take the average pleb MAL user's rating it's still a comparison most of the time since they usually compare how much they enjoyed an anime and how much they didn't.Even yours is a comparison even if you don't realize it you rated so many works with 10 around 49 or so to be exact that means YOUR standard is 10 anything worse than 10 is below YOUR standard enjoyment and in your case nothing can be higher than the standard.
>This was true until recently, but what is the point of anime, if you are only looking for something something realistic? Anime makes unrealistic things possible. Wouldn't it be better to watch tv-shows in your case?
When talking about realism I'm not talking about stuff like magic, fantasy aspect and so on, but the realism of characters and the tone of the work, you can be a fantasy magic adventure show and still be realistic as long you have realistic characters and tone.
Of course you wouldn't understand this since you haven't seen a single realistic anime out there so you have nothing to compare it to.
On the matter of tv shows and so on they are actually more unrealistic since they 99% end with a happy end and happy ends are unrealistic since life is not sunshine and rainbows in the first place.
All of the characters in movies constantly have well written and well thought dialogues which they recite in flawless ways.
Have you ever talked with people in real life?Their sentences are full of errors, they make stuff up the spot and full of worlds like ....ehhhm,the things is... ,how should i say this and full of pauses while TV character dialogues as I said are flawless.Anime is actually better in this category since the dialogues tend to be more realistic than in TV.
Also Hollywood movies constantly use random Deus Ex Machina or other unexplained bullshit to make the said happy endings true or start the story in the first place, while a serious anime actually has explained rules and establishes why things happen and what things can't happen in that universe while movies just go "LOL MAGIC"
Also I'm not looking for realism per say I'm looking for the intellectual and mature type of entertainment which is deepness, moral lessons, social commentary, realistic drama and generally more mature themes like:insanity, depression, human enchantment and modification, dystopian settings, moral and social rights and wrongs, questioning reality itself and so on, that you can't find in your shitty unrealistic fanservice anime and even if you do they are presented in an extremely silly and inmature way.
The only place where I tolerate the lack of realism are comedy and parody anime hell it's actually better for those kinds of anime to be not realistic.
I also want to be actually surprised and not be able to predict where the show is going in the next 8 episodes just by watching 3 episodes, which is the usual case with your shitty fanservice shows that I can see everything that is going to happen even before they happen and I'm bored while watching them because of this.
And you ask this of both of us after he explained in details his marking system?
The ordinal scale exists for the sole reason of comparing things and it's used to give an approximate value to things that normally have no value, so that you'll be able to compare these things.
>Used to be the case?
Don't lie. It's still the case, just maybe to a less visible for you extent.
(look at your profile description to understand that part with system, crazyness, etc. in my previous comment)
You are a part of the mediocrity. If you ever felt that you're somehow smarter than others you were always wrong. You just want to escape reality by watching anime. Probably, because you're an introvert and you deal badly with people, so getting into the fantastic world is rather easy for you. Just like that woman watching crappy romantic serials because she lacks the feeling of love in her life. You don't give a damn about an interesting story or something new to evolve and you're entertained by some fights, fake deepness and a crappy message like "The power of friendship can do anything". You are one person from those huge masses that can be entertained by cheap things.
Judging by your replies, you were not capable of doing an analysis of the words that were adressed at you, which proves that your lack of ability to look straight at things. You were just looking for a comeback. You wanted to disagree, that's all. You're simply following the program of how any typical person that doesn't give a damn about the truth is arguing, despite the fact that this wasn't that much of an argument.
You think your rating system is somehow special, but the truth is that this is exactly how your average person rates stuff.
You hate the system solely because of YOUR inability to adapt to it. You can easily classify a person as arrogant just because his words are not convenient to you. I bet you already classified me as one.
You're not crazy. You're not weird. You're not screwed up. You're AVERAGE. You're just another TYPICAL introvert, looking for a way to escape the seemingly borring for you reality.
And most likely you will desperately negate all these things in your own mind, because you think you are somehow special in a regard compared to other people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj8OjPKN9B4
And this is exactly why people write long texts in microsoft word or other text programs.
>Thanks to your last reply I now know that your tastes are very very different from mine.. Yes I love fan-service if thats what it is, also why would you hate it?
>But why do you watch anime? Your list shows that you give an average mark of 4.5, so I keep wondering, why are you still watching anime?
The fact that you even bothered to say this provest that you didn't understand shit both me and valik talked about. We already said over a 1000 times that our ratings have nothing to do with how much we like or enjoy an anime.
So even if I enjoyed an anime immensely, but it was shit from a critical viewpoint I would give it a a score of 1-4 regardless of how much I enjoyed.
Personal enjoyement is irrelevant to critics when it comes to rating and reviewing and anime.
This is because each person enjoys different things, and each person has a different idea of what is entertaining in the first place.
So you cannot base a show worth on enjoyement, since enjoyement is not objective as we have said before.
Unlike the categories of Character,Story and Execution, since even if someone doesn't see the plotholes or doesn't understand why that thing is a plothole, The plothole will still be there regardless of what an individual person might think which makes thme objectively ratable categories.
Just like the matter with characters, it is a fact if a character is a Tsundere,Dandere,Masked Man Clone and insert various other types of characters here, regardless if some dimwitted fool doesn't even know about those categories or don't realize they belong there.
Same matter with the execution category, even if someone doesn't see it it is a fact when something is executed inapproprietly and when it done approprietly.
For example:Putting a happy cheerfull music while a character is dying is obviously inappropriate as fuck, while dramatic and slow music would be appropriate in this kind of situation.
Also on the matter of whether critics enjoy these bad shows or not depends on the individual critic themselves some like Valik who are constantly viewing everything critically and looking for flaws everywhere are not able to enjoy these kinds of shows most of the time, while critics like me who just "turn on" their critic vision can enjoy it regardless of how bad it is most of the time.
Also you tried to bring in MAL scores, but that is utterly pointless on your part considering I don't use MAL ratings at all.So a 10 from me doesn't mean its a masterpiece nor does a 1 mean it's horrible the shit you see in my list is not even a rating to be honest ,but more of a "comparison" ,I compare each said shows that happen to be similar and the same genre of that show.
So let's say medieval anime for example I gave berserk a 10 because it's the best medieval anime I have seen so far(again enjoyement is not rated into this even though I enjoyed the show)and Densetsu Yuusha no Densetsu which is a medieval fantasy with lots of flaws, but still overally decent receives a 5.
Or let's take battle shönens for example
Sword Art Online gets a 1 because it's the worst one I have seen so far even though it would get a score of 4 or 5 if I actually decided to rate it an not compare it, also I might give it a higher score if I see something worse than it in the battle-shönen category.
Next is Air Gear and Accel World with a score of 2 only slightly better than S.A.O.
Ao no exorcist comes in with a 3 because it's full of clichés and manages to have 8 episode worth of fillers in a 25 episode series and anime unique ending.
Busou Renkin is rated 4 for just slightly having more flaws than your usual shönen
And the average(5) are the following One Piece,Bleach and Naruto as all of them fit the cliché shönennes and fit the stereotypes perfectly
6 would be D Gray man simply for the fact that even though it is more or less same as the big three it features many things that are usually not touched or done in shönen like regular themes of insanity, angst and depression constantly torturing and killing of character is also there for the most part.
7 would be Shingeki no Kyojin simply for the matter that it hardly feels like a shönen series anymore even though it is having extremely good execution and managing to convey the feeling that anyone can die unlike in regular shönens where no character ever dies and the ones that do get revived.
I have no 8 as of yet and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood gains the mark of 9 for being the best on I have seen so far, obviously I have watched a lot more series than the ones I mentioned, but I just wanted to mention the prime representatives of each number and not mention all of the anime belonging to that category.
So again bringing in my ratings is pointless since I don't rate them there, but simply compare theme.
As for why am I watching anime?
Why not?I like anime I enjoy around 75% of the anime I watched and I have watched over a 500 anime, hell even if I talk shit about an anime because it's critically bad, it's a very high possibility that enjoyed them simply because it was bad, bad anime are entertaining in their own right like I enjoyed Mirai Nikki even though it was one of the worst shows I have seen.
> Yes I love fan-service if thats what it is, also why would you hate it?
Critically speaking fanservice is simply bad, because it's sole aim is to get more audience by flaunting off boobs and assess or flashly explosions just to get more audience instead of doing the same thing without fanservice, most fanservice shows do not aim in making a good show or something outstanding, no their single purpose is to get money for the studio and fanservice anime are the best at getting money for studios, and as I have said many times before most studios only care about money!
Also since these shows only aim is creating money and not making a good show they are filled with holes and the characters feel unrealistic and lifeless there is no love in such a series, like in certain anime you can feel the amount of love they put into a series that you know that the directors had fun making this anime into reality and such these anime contain many many hidden things and lines that you wouldn't even notice the first time when watching it and you can discover new and new things you haven't see before in them and understand the characters more and more you watch them and even see them in a different light, while all of the chararacters in fanservice shit are highly one dimensional, there is little to no deepness in them and you only become more aware of their flaws if you rewatch them.
Also even speaking from my enjoyement wise I no longer enjoy most of the fanservice anime since because of the thing I mentioned previously the more you see something the more you are likely to get tired of it and bored and all of the damn fanservice anime are the same in one way or another so I can't really enjoy the majority of them anymore.
>Well of course, until a few weeks ago I needed to escape reality. Thats also why I don't think when I watch anime
And this is the problem with you and most people who do watch anime, you are simply looking for another tool to escape from reality and forget your shitty troubles this is why you enjoy unrealistic anime so much filled with fanservice, This is also WHY you cannot enjoy anime with deep meaning and realistic themes and characters, BECAUSE it reminds YOU of the shitty life you are trying to escape from and reminds you of whatever misery you have this is why people like you don't really like the more subtanceful anime out there.
Then this shall be my final comment then since you are still saying 2+3=7, so I have no choice but to correct you. Sure I could ignore the fact that you are wrong, but that would lead nowhere and you wouldn’t understand why you are wrong and make the same mistake later as well.
>First of all, you are misunderstanding me for a great deal. You copy only parts of my text. Without the context I'd consider it wrong too.
No I don’t I only copy part of your answers to spare some space and not make the whole text even more lengthier than it should be. I read everything you said without fail at least 10 times considering that’s how many times I have rewritten that text.
Also I should be the one saying considering you are the one who misunderstood or not understood half of my previous text. Most of the new questions you asked are ones that I have already answered or pointless question that serve nothing. You are like another person I argued before he too only looked at sentences trying to find something to fight back with and not looking at my whole comments and trying to understand them.
>Also I have this thing called 'verbal performal gap'(google it if you want)(btw my performal IQ is about 22 points higher). This means I have trouble explaining things in words. I think in images, add this to the foreign language and BAM! Misunderstandings.
Then go reread my post multiple times if you know you have such problems it’s not my fault if you misunderstand half of the things I say because of that.
>I don't really understand what you mean..
I don’t see what you understand consider that was one of my simplest explanations, basically what I said was that you don’t need to WORK as a critic to be considered a critic.
>Maybe it is me, but I thought that I gave an example of what I would consider a good anime.(This is only true for me when I try to rate without my opinion.)
How the fuck is this without your opinion, when you say that this is what YOU would consider to be a good anime, also it’s a bad answer just think of the case of a kid saying that 3x3 is 12 and he thinks that is the correct answer, since you gave the definition of a popular anime not a good one whether you know about it or not.
>I never meant to say that I was right or more knowledgeable than others.. Everyone has their own truths, I'm trying to make Valik understand mine.
Expect in your text you pretty much act like you know more than others even if you don’t realize this and come off as arrogant. Hell I’m arrogant myself, but at least I admit that I’m arrogant.
Also yes everyone has their own truths and they are entitled to it; however that doesn’t mean that every truth is also correct simplest case would be with 2+3=7 example.
>I was trying to say that, just because someone is a critic, he isn't necessarily right. So my opinion might differ from the critic his opinion.
I never said that a critic is more right than other people, but critics know how to construct their arguments far better than other random people not to mention the majority of those people I mentioned argue with only subjective points while a critic will always argue with objective truths and facts, because they know that arguing about subjective things is stupid, while those people that do argue about subjective don’t even know what is objective and subjective in the first place.
>I know I said this but After I saw you write so much about it, I thought I'd explain. First of all, you said that people wouldn't argue with each other if all critics disagree. This is only true if either the majority of the populace are critics, or the only people with influence are critics.
Except if you bothered to try and understand my text you would have realized that I was talking about the whole of humanity and not just critics.
“First of all, you said that people wouldn't argue with each other if all critics disagree.”
I have never said this.
All humans argue by default, since all humans have some sort of opposing views and ideals with some other humans on the planet which is a fact, critics can just argue better than others. Wars, battles beating up people and talking shit about them is also a form of argument they are just not as refined as the proper one.
>First of its only considered a [evolutionary non-failure?] when the outstanding sheep actually have a better survival chances. Because evolution doesnt care about the individuals who die.
That aside. My statement about popular anime making good anime is only true for me IF I rate without my opinion.
You completely missed the point of the story, also just because of the fact that, the individual sheep didn’t jump off the cliff and die it has already better chances of surviving than those who did I don’t know how could you have not understood something so simple.
And I already said that rating of yours is purely influenced by what you consider to be a good show so it is NOT without your opinion, understand it already!
>I honestly couldn't care less about fan-service. Actually most of the times it just annoys me. I think if you see my scores you'd find out that most ecchi(I guess thats the 'official' name for fan-service)anime score lower than others. And of course there are exceptions.
You are making the mistake of not knowing the proper definition of things, namely fanservice here while it got deviated by the masses and now it is only used to refer the sexual type of fanservice, it originally includes all things that are usually pleasing to fans this can include flashy fight scenes, putting characters into certain situations and of course the sexual ones if you don’t like a fanservice a show it is no longer actually a fanservice, but a fan disservice.(Fun fact: all the anime in your favourites are fanservice ones, just saying)
Also ecchi(literally means sex) is the name that the japanese use on any porn products including hentai, normal porn , porn games and even the softcore porn “fanservice” shows.
> guess thats true in a way, but I don't see how saying to to me helps you in any way.. :/ Also just because a show contains something thats ecchi, doesn't mean the rest of the show is bad.
It doesn’t help me I just wanted to make you aware of the fact that you are part of the people who are making the industry become worse and worse.
Also of course it doesn’t mean that it’s immediately bad, just because it has ecchi in it, but it’s fucking sadly true for Anime, I seen 97% of all the ecchi anime out there and I can say with solid confidence that they have nothing to them besides fanservice.
>Oh, but I do care.. I hate it when that happens. But thats the other way around. I've never started a light novel without first seeing the anime. And I only start the light novel if I thoroughly enjoyed the anime. This is why I don't care whether or not the anime left things out.
''I enjoyed it anyway and now I get to read even more about something I enjoy!''
So you are basically ignoring the problem instead of accepting it, what a sad world we live in.
>True, if the majority of people want things they'll probably get it. That doesn't mean its bad. What I am understanding about what you said is, if an anime is popular than it is also bad. Is this what you mean?
No I don’t mean that just because something is popular it is bad, but in most cases what the majority likes are your generic fanservice, wish fulfilment and reality escaping shows which are all bad so in most cases popular shows also happen to be sadly bad(S.A.O., One Piss , Fairy Tail , K-on and I could list a 100 other shows), this is not always the case see attack on titan is somewhat above average and this is also true for such anime like code geass.
>These comparisons are only valid when I would be the one doing it. Since I'm not.. :/
Top lel
You again just ignore my point and try to find something to gnaw back one, but don’t worry I’m not called an intellectual rapist for nothing let me fix that little problem of yours!
-“I don’t care the drawing that my sister tried to copy for me, from the internet turned out shit, since the picture from the internet is okay”
“I don’t care how badly a professional photoshopper did my photoshop since my face is still good looking”
“I don’t care that the cake that the shop owner made for me fell to the ground and got destroyed, since it was fine 5 minutes ago”
See? It only to took this much to turn this back on you.
>My only point was, that originality as a concept isn't necessarily good. As you said it depends on the execution.
Fact: Everything is shit without proper execution, no exceptions.
Originality is good since it stays away from the boring norm and offers a breath of fresh air, seriously dude how many times do you see 3 worms fight against moles with machine guns and explosions in anime? I think I have made my point.
>I'm not sure which part of what I said makes this obvious but I'm quite offended.. :/ Until 14 months ago I did nothing but reading books.. Although I haven't really read much literature.
Excuse me I have made a mistake let me verify what I exactly meant “Also it is pretty obvious that you do not deal with the intellectual kind of books a lot”
Seriously you can read all the Harry Potter or Percy Jackson(Typical escapism books)like books you want, but they are not going to make you any smarter or introduce world breaking new ideas to you nor will it show on your knowledge unless you are taking a harry potter quiz.
>might get bored eventually, but I have seen cliche, I know cliche, but because the context is different every time(at least in the cases I'm aware of), it has not bored me yet. Which, FOR ME, doesnt make something bad.
You can have a corpse killed in a brutally mudered way in the middle of a sacrificial chamber
You can have a corpse in the middle of the road
You can have a corpse in the middle of the park
You can have a corpse sleeping beneath the earth
It is still not going to change that fact that thing is a corpse!
>Please tell me where I can find them then. If there are official guidelines I'd love to find them. But seeing as neither you nor
Valik have answered the question, I just asked for the fourth time, I assume there are none.
Valik already linked you some I guess you just haven’t bothered to look at them, but hell even myanimelist has one:http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=575725 Also just because you don’t bother to search and find something doesn’t mean that they don’t exist seriously you could easily find them if you just bothered to google it.
>Not really.. For me entertainment includes everything in a show that I am able to enjoy. I actually love anime that are intellectual , or deep. Although it is true I don't really care about moral lessons.
Not really man, I have looked at your list and the only show that was close to intellectual and deep that you actually watched was Monoke Hime one of the few anime you rated with a 6, which further proves my point that people like you don’t like Intellectual anime.
>This is an extreme case. And I agree with you that this shouldn't be done. But when you hear something interesting or see something that you like, why not use it? I think it would limit a person for a great deal if he doesn't use those thing just because it wouldn't be considered original.
It’s not an extreme case, because I was subtly talking about an actual anime here namely Guilty crown that stolen the story of code geass and characters from Evangelion. Also it’s bad because it’s blatant stealing the guy who made guilty crown worked on code geass, but after he left the anime studio sunrise he went to production I.G. with the promise of giving them their own “Code Geass”. I don’t think I need to explain to you why stealing is bad do i?
>Is this what critics do? If so they are quite the close-minded people. Being able to learn from an other person his opinion and other things he says, is the Aristotelian way.(Or so I've heard)
No the Aristotelian way is arguing until there is only one perfect theory left some other theory may also be true, but they may not be as efficient for example you can cut wood with an axe and a chainsaw, it should be obvious which is faster and efficient.
Of course you can learn from the other person if he says something that is actually worthwhile, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use this as a chance to come up with something even better that topples the ideas of that person and he will learn from you then.
>Btw to support what I just said about me liking intellectual anime, I loved Code Geass for its intellectualness.
Top Lel
Code geass is not an intellectual show, only plebenians like you think so, Code Geass is not done in a serious way nor is it mature in it’s story telling it’s filled with a crapton of fanservice so people like you can still keep watching it, true it has some philosophy and moral lessons, but unlike actual deep anime Code Geass stuff them directly into your face, you don’t have to think about anything or try to find the meaning hidden in the story, not mention that the said philosophy and moral lessons are as old as humanity itself and can be seen in 50000 other works, so it’s nothing new or original.
>Why is it that 4 chord songs are often liked by a lot of people(Search 'axis of awesome 4 chords' on youtube if you don't know what I'm talking about) It is because the beat is appealing to a lot of people. Wouldn't it be the same for anime? The themes, comedy, cliches or whatever used in the anime appeal to a lot of people. Couldn't you consider that a quality?
As I have and valik said before, music is almost completely subjective category so it depends on the persons individual tastes, ideals and viewpoints there is no set “good music” out there since you can’t rate them like characters or story.
Also you fail to understand that even though clichés may be bad people are FREE to like them even though they are, however they are not allowed to go out and spout some nonsense that is not true like “S.A.O. is the most original anime evar” and the like, realizing that something has flaws and maybe even bad and still liking it is what considered to be a true fan and not just simply a mindless fanboy that assumes everything they like is automatically without flaws and is the best.
1. story writting + characters + execution + personal enjoyment (your typical stuff that you see around the MAL)
Sstory -->
(useful link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary_technique )
It comes to this in major perspective. Out of those moves some are considered good/acceptable and some are bad. When I say story, I mean purely the script itself. It's about what is happening and why it is happening. A good story MUST have a logical continuity and its set of rules, so that the author won't pull off any random crap.
Characters -->
Huge emphasis on originality, considering that the big majority of them now stink of cliche so much that I can tell how they will behave in any situation (based on their archetype).
Here also enters character development, how 'alive' they are and how are they treated by the show. It is really horrible when a character is a mere plot device (look the link above).
Execution -->
This reffers to art/animation, music and atmosphere. The most important here is that they're not taken separately. Execution is more about, for example "how does the art/music fit the pre-established mood". There are tons of ways of how to do a work be it animated or not. An example of bad execution is: the show starts off on a serious note, stuff happens, maybe people die idk, then the MC goes off somewhere home to relax and the show throws at you some moe looking girls, stars/sparkles everywhere. Or a closer to reality example, an anime called Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu where shit gets serious and serious and then you see some tsun crap with the lovers quarelling in the middle of a near-death tension moment.
Or the opposite of the examples I presented: you might fall asleep if a slower developing show moves too slow (Ergo Proxy).
If it's gloomy, make it gloomy. If it's fun, make it fun. A correct execution can really make wonders and even turn a crap filled writting into an ok show.
--> Personal enjoyment
Nothing to explain. I like what I like. For example I love medieval settings. I love serious stories with wars and maybe even politics, major scales where whole countries might be involved. I love dat jump of Casshern's (khm... well I overdid it here a bit xD ).
2. Yes. Some standards are much more important than others, especially when it comes to judge a show and give it a mark.
As I already said, the execution is extremely important. Then the other stuff like execution>story>characters>>>enjoyment, ye like this.
Yes. I minimize the enjoyment factor while rating something.I realize that it is impossible to remove it completely, but I can't say a show is bad if it doesn't take place in the same medieval era or have no magic involved.
3. Standards for story writting and characters are set in stone.
But, ofc everything is open for debate, reason: We all make mistakes.
Yes... There are things we can overlook or add some non-existent factor from out imagination and attribute it to a character for example. Therefore these 2 topics are easily debatable on an objective level discussion. (ye... broad meaning again)
Execution is half debatable because people have their preferences. Yet, again there are things that are simply unforgivable (examples above) and things are done correctly (HOW correctly already depends on the viewer). Therefore when we talk about execution, we can't be that objective in debates or analysis.
Personal enjoyment is personal. This is entirely subjective and has no place in any analysis/debate/review or w/e.
4. Extremely important:
-> a strong message for the viewer
-> a well done execution
-> no evident asspulls (see the link above)
Would improve improve my enjoyment pretty much:
-> some decent plot with plot twists and such
-> original/fresh characters or if not original then with a noticeble development
Would drop my enjoyment very hard:
-> Some crap ass nakama power with no logic behind it (your average battle shounen -> FT and such)
-> tsunderes (I fucking hate them)
-> a way too predictable plotline
-> excessive ammount of fanservice
-> a crappy execution
maybe there is something more, but it didn't cross my mind at the moment.
5. Usually no, with several exeptions. Out of the obviously overrated shows by me: Kara no Kyoukai, Casshern Sins.
Also, don't forget that marks are marks. Ordinal scale by itself is not perfect so let's say I admit variations. (Unless the difference is really considerable)
6. The 3 categories mentioned above. In the order mentioned above.
7. No. Some shows appeal to enjoyment without being good. You can see in my list shows with bad marks, but I still somehow didn't drop them... Reason? Because it was enjoyable enough for me to continue watching it. Also expectations play a huge role... You can go into a show expecting that you're watching some mediocre shit, it just appealed to my interest.
I explained how and why I rate things above pretty well.
P.S.: YES. This took way less time than writting the wall of text to highline all your mistakes just in the previous comment.
Valik is a critic , you don’t have to earn a living as a critic to be considered one hell professional critics are also kind of bad ,considering that many of them are paid to say nice things about works from their creators ,though being an unprofessional critic also has disadvantages mainly the fact that many people won’t take your criticism seriously just ,because you are a not professional one.
>I didnt get ticked of by the truths he told. I got ticked of because he called my opinion, regarding a subjective matter, wrong.
No he just corrected you, because you really gave the definition of a popular show not a good show.
>So frickin' what?
I’m just trying to imply that it’s kind of arrogant of you to think, that you are more right and knowledgeable about such things than a large group of people who are at least twice as old as you and far more knowledgeable in this matter, not to mention many of them do this for a living unlike you who is some 16-17 old guy just finishing his high school.
>Everywhere in the world there are people disagreeing with the 'standard' or 'average' critic or whatever. Hell, even critics disagree with critics..
You forget the fact that most of those people are just butt hurt monkeys who can hardly form a coherent sentence and are just mad, because some critics said their show was bad or a show they hated was praised by a critic, they may disagree with the critics and it is their right to do so, however very few of them can actually explain why the critics are not right.
Also obviously critics argue with other critics, mainly because they are the people that are openly expressing their views and judgement on a show in a sophisticated manner that other people who do the same and have a different opinion will start to argue, and critics are one of the few people that can argue on equal footing with other critics.
>Wouldnt the world be a better place if all critics could agree with each other?
No it wouldn’t ,it would be incredibly boring and stale not to mention if people didn’t argue with each other and just blindly accepted each others ideals ,then humanity wouldn’t be as far as it is now and we would be still living in clay houses.
2 people with opposing opinions will argue with each other, and then they try to think more and more logically and form better arguments to beat their opponent, one of them will eventually beat the other and will introduce his ideas to more and more people then that idea gets stronger and stronger, then the people who don’t agree with this new ideal shall go to the side of the lost one and form a party. The 2 parties then continue to live their lives in relative coexistence until they get into conflict with the other party because of their fundamentally different ideals another argument breaks out, however this time party A will try to think together and form better plans and ideas to outwit party B, which then promptly forces party B to also try to develop better plans and ideas to repel back the new and strong ideas of party A otherwise, they would be wiped out. No matter the end result both parties got stronger from the fact that they had conflicts with each other, that would have never or really slowly happened if they agreed with each other and this cycle keeps repeating itself from step 1 to the most part.
Congratulations I just explained why opposing ideals and human disagreement are beneficial to humanity as a whole and loosely explained that even though wars are terrible things and many humans die in them they are actually beneficial to humanities technological progression considering the 2 world wars alone have boosted our tech research rate by at least 300 years.
Also not having opinions separate from the majority would make you an evolutionary failure since you are just like a mindless sheep that is blindly following the horde of other mindless sheep, sure it would give you a place and comfort while there ,but once the horde leader of these mindless sheep jumps off a cliff, then the rest of sheep would follow as well blindly to their death, while a smart sheep would realize that it’s going to it’s death and would try to stop and escape danger.
>4. I judge things differently than most people, and I'm aware of that. I don't care if a show is good or bad as long as I can enjoy it.
Nah sadly most people judge shows the same way as you do which is what makes us critics sad to be honest and the worst thing is that people like you don’t even realize that negative consequences their shitty action has. People like fanservice shows, they don’t really care whether it’s good or bad as long as they get their tits and ass or other delicious body parts, and a crapton amount of these people actually go and buy these horrendous works ,so what animation studios see that they don’t have to come up with anything original or deep, since all you people need to be entertained is just a bunch of panty shots and explosions so obviously studios will keep printing this unoriginal crap in massive amounts since it costs basically nothing and prints money from people like you, this is how we get to the fact that To Love Ru has 3-4 seasons and Ikkitousen has 4, both would easily qualify as a softcore porn and nothing else, while actual deep and well written anime like Shigurui,Berserk and Claymore never even get finished and left to rot, because of the fact that the majority likes crap instead of actual stuff with substance.
Studios will always go wherever the money is, they don’t care if what they make is bad or good as long as it prints money, since the main goal of a studio is always making money, not producing quality works and the money lies with the majority who enjoys crap like ikkitousen than the minority who are actually looking for quality shows.
If the majority wants moe anime with nothing, but cute girls then they will make shit like that
If the majority wants mindless fanservice that can qualify as softcore porn they will make shit like that
If the majority wants shitty fighting anime with craptier animation with lots of willpower and nakama themes they will make shit like that
If the majority would actually prefer anime with substance then there would be more anime with substance and less of the ones mentioned above, not to mention that anime with proper substance cost a lot more than some moe or fanservice filled shit would ever do, which is another reason why they don’t make them, Quality anime is not cheap!
>Are you saying that every critic on this planet would give the same rating to a show? If they rate the same way and keep their subjective opinion out of it, wouldn't they all get to the same solution?
No you have a fundamentally wrong idea about critics, it is true that many of them use this way of rating mainly, however I never said that it’s the same thing after that too, many critics including me factor even such thing like when was the anime actually released and how is it in comparison to the other stuff that was released that year and that season, some of them would value in the art and music as while, while others would not see valik for example. Some critics would also include the effect of a show on the industry itself like lucky star and k-on starting the golden age of moe in 2007 that lasted till 2011 which still has some after effects mind you or the effects of S.A.O. encouraging more stuff about mmorpgs and games to be made. Some would factor in how faithful was the anime adaptation to the source materials while others would not so for example a critic who doesn’t factor in adaptation faithfulness would rate higurashi no naku koro ni as above average or good while a critic who does factor it into his rating would label it as an utter failure which is a disgrace to the source material. I could go one ,but they are basically tons of ways critics add their own things to how they rate shows aside from the set standard rules making each critic unique.
>I mean the way things in a show come together. How characters fit in a setting, or if the humor is appropriate for the characters/setting.
That thing is called the execution of a show and valik does rate that since it’s part of the things that can be rated critically with ease like story and characters.
>I did read the novels. That's why I don't care how much the anime left out. I read it anyway, so I didn't miss a thing.
This is a ridiculously stupid argument that’s like saying “I don’t care that they completely fucked up the movie of my favourite books since the book itself is actually okay “
“I don’t care the drawing I tried to copy from the internet turned out shit, since the picture from the internet is okay”
“I don’t care how badly I did my photoshop since my face is still good looking”
“I don’t care that the cake I made fell to the ground and got destroyed, since it was fine 5 minutes ago”
This is exactly how retarded this argument sounds I don’t think there is any need for further comments.
>This metaphor is wrong.. You are confusing established (math)rules with rating anime. If the above would be the same thing, then every show would get a rating from the producer beforehand. Because they would be able to judge if the show is good or bad.
Of course they would be able to judge if it’s good or bad, except they wouldn’t give two fucks about it since studios aren’t about making good or bad shows, but making money, stop having the wrong ideas about studios already!
Also if studios rated their own shit before hand, then they would appear like some narcisstic assholes. That would be the same as people liking their own facebook statuses on the internet, it simply wouldn’t count at all since no studio would say anything bad about something they made.
>I'm going to sketch a storyline for you.
''Its about 3 worms who are going to war against the moles. So they take their machine guns and dynamite to the moles their headquarter and start fighting. They win the fight. ''
''The end.''
Its a very original concept. That doesn't make it good. I know this is somewhat far fetched but you ought to get the idea now.
It all depends on how would you execute this actually, you could make this simple shit into something amazing with some drama and added moral lessons, see a simple premise can be expanded in 90000 different ways you could give an infite amount of back stories to the 3 worms themselves or why are they warring with the moles in the first place or why are moles and worms are intelligent in the first place and you can write the war itself in over 100000 different ways. See just because the premise is simple it doesn’t mean that you can’t turn it into something amazing with proper execution if it’s executed well it could become something great because of it’s originality if it’s executed like shit it would become bad because of it’s originality, yes of course originality doesn’t mean it is always good, but you still have to value in the fact that they are at the least trying to be original unlike other studios who just blatantly copy each other’s works.
Also it is pretty obvious that you do not deal with books a lot, since that is a medium where you can see shit that is basically a human trying to communicate with a green rectangle. However the twists is that the rectangle lives only 2 dimensions therefore he cannot see a human from the 3rd dimension and only hear the voice of this human who is trying to communicate with this newfound creature that appears to be a green rectangle that is moving, it turns into a drama pretty easily when the green rectangle starts thinking that he is going insane and that the voice is only in his head. This is some world renowned book by the way, but sadly I forgot its name.
>The opposite is true too. Something is clichéd, this doesn't make it a bad show. It is only one aspect of the show.
Yes it does, if you think otherwise it means that you haven’t got tired of these said clichés yet, but you will after you watch even more anime, the amount itself is different to each person some realize that cliché is bad after seeing something for the 5th time while others only on the 100th.
I’m sure you have heard of a joke so many times that you have become bored and tired of them, that means that the joke became cliché to you since you have heard it 1000 times and no longer find it funny same thing can happen to story and characters. If you see modern tsundere for long enough you will eventually get tired of them, if you see females overreacting in anime after a male enters the bathroom and beating the crap out of them you will eventually think of it as oh not again I seen this shit like 1000 times. Again the amount needed for this is different to each person, but it will in fact happen.
>You did disagree though. There is no such thing as a commonly accepted way to determine the quality of a show. So I gave my subjective opinion on what I think is a good way to determine quality, which is popularity.
Of course there are, you just don’t know about them this is the harsh truth you can always rate them as a critic or if you have experience as a writer like myself you can rate them as a fellow writer of stories or if you ever produced something you can rate it as producer and so on.
The only thing popularity actually tells that it appeals to a large number of people for whatever reason and it got popular for some reason. And meaningless stuff gets popular all the time for no reason just look at shitty ragecomics or lolcats or most of the “funny” youtube videos out there. Also once a show has got enough popular the mindless horde effect will come into play where mindless sheep like you will go and watch this show and like the crap out of it just to fit in the rest of the people increasing the hype train. Actually if a show is too popular it will raise the expectations of the people wanting to watch them since they would think like that it can’t get popular despite being shit even though it does and they end up more disappointed than if they just watched the show without being aware of it’s hype.
>And yes for me popularity makes a show good.
Well done well done sir!
Clap Clap
Honestly this was the dumbest comment I seen since the beginning of this year and it honestly made me facepalm with a force of a thousands suns, I will surely store this comment away for later use and show it to other people that people can actually say such dumb things while being seriously. I humbly thank you for this golden.
Fuck this seriously I’m not even going to explain why that thing is bullshit considering I already wasted 3 months on it with someone else that considered one piece to be the best manga in existence simply because it has the most sold manga copies out of all manga.I instead let valik negate it if he wants to.
>Assuming what you said about good and bad shows is true. Why would anyone want to watch a good show, if it could mean they are not able to enjoy it?
This is the difference between people like you(the kind that only watches anime for the entertainment factor) and the kind that watches anime for the intellectual type of entertainment a.k.a. deepness of a show, moral lessons deep philosophical themes and so on. You can watch these shows because they inspire a lot of thought and feelings in you that you won’t get by simply watching some shitty pew pew anime like S.A.O. or one piss and of course you wouldn’t understand unless you bothered to watch one of these and according by your list you haven’t watched any show like this. It’s hard to explain so it would be just easier if you watched one yourself and tried to understand it and think through it, however people like you usually fall asleep or drop these shows before they can finish them
>Do I really have to explain how you are contradicting yourself here?
No he is not contradicting himself at all since he doesn’t factor in personal enjoyment to his rating and says that it cannot be explained logically which is a true fact and one of the reasons that critics usually never factor it into a show’s rating.
Also the whole text of his says that regular people can only explain why a show is good by using subjective arguments like, “lol dunno man this show was so entertaining and had a lot’s of fun watching it” while people like valik use well constructed logical and objective arguments to prove their point on why a show sucks “This anime has nothing original the plot of this anime was blatantly stolen from anime X the only difference is that it has different characters than anime X which also happens to be stolen from an another show namely anime Y”
Now about your good/bad thing. Imagine that some1 that isn't able to count. You tell him that 1+1=2. And he answers: "I'm not so sure... This is only your opinion."
It is commonly accepted that (example) - originality is a good thing in a show/or/showing new aspects of the same thing under a different angle (it also counts). Original=good, typical=ok/meh, cliched=bad >>> the end.
I say nope to your opinion because it is wrong, not because my opinion is different (popularity is not equal to quality, which is actually common sense for some people). This is why I corrected you.
You shouldn't think that all opinions are valid by their nature. There are acceptable opinions (which in some situations might contradict each other, yes) and nonacceptable opinions (which is keept for yourself, in case you can't prove anything). You must have a ground/basis if you want to voice your opinion. And depending on the comunity you're atm inthe basis differs (some consider "because she's kawaii" enough basis to consider a female character good, but in case we're on a different level we use well constructed logical arguments, right?)
