I like anime; subs or dubs, whatever is fine with me. Sometimes I get very picky with voices (ie Al's voice in full metal alchemist. Japanese-- too girly, English --much better), but this is very rare. I usually watch whatever I can get my hands on, but I prefer the English if I want to multi-task while watching. I read some manga. I used to buy whatever I read, but since some issues aren't available to buy in English, I've taken to going online and reading there.
My favorite anime series have amazing music. A bad anime can sweep me over with top-class music. I really like supernatural anime where there are ancient orders and tataru. I really like magic circles, if I see one-- like in Asura Cryin' and Full Metal Alchemist-- then I'm bound to love the anime. I have long-term relationship with languages and etymology. I was ecstatic to learn the different names for the Cybodies and the Asura Machina in Star Driver and Asura Cryin' (did you know Cybodies are named after the Phoenician Alphabet? and most Asura Machina are named after the Japanese names for different elements/compounds (and are colored in a similar fashion as the chemical?))
I really like anime that hint at or contain aspects of the Soviet Union/Cold War as well as Historical Fiction/alternate history anime-- Code Geass for example. Mecha are awesome, Code Geass was my first mecha followed by Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann and they got me into the genre. I love government conspiracy/coup/subversion (Geass again). Lastly, I deeply enjoy Anti-hero anime- Geass + Death Note.
My Top 5 anime are Code Geass, Asura Cryin', Full Metal Alchemist+FMAB, Star Driver, Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann
Other than that, I like playing video games, (rpg, rts, platformer, action, adventure, rhythm, some shooter, some fighter, some mmorpg) I enjoy reading, watching tv, writing poetry, sleeping, cooking, running, singing, drawing, and going to the beach.
I'm going to be entering my 2nd year of my MFA program this fall.

You might give Symphogear a try. A lot of people were put off by the singing girls, but there is actually a Sumerian conspiracy plot going on the more you watch it. At least in the first season.
The anime Betterman also include a lot of esoteric and occult themes and layers, including a guy who literally shapeshifts into a dragon and they even reference the telepathic Indigo children (as depicted by the NewAge movement) in one episode.
Currently I am watching the Happy Science movies from Ookawa, Ryuuhou http://myanimelist.net/people/16451/Ookawa_Ryuuhou and they are really multi-layered in terms of themes. The movies deal with Greek myths, the reincarnation of Jesus/Buddha, Karma, Sumerian gods (like Enki and Enil), the Reptilian/Alien agenda and even the modern police-state.
