Also, that's the reason why I said I was interested in the cinema depiction more than anything else in the film. And I get that it really is about the progression of cinema. I love watching passion being so visibly presented on screen like that, but that doesn't make the whole experience any less unfulfilling. Because for everything else in the film, almost nothing was enough.
First of all, I want to get one thing out of the way first. I do think the movie is not about love. It's a too quixotic, dreamy and honestly lacking love story as opposed to its execution department which can be considered heavy-handed. It creates an illusion of depth that doesn't exist in the first place, which is why I find it ultimately a disingenuous love story, and worse yet a pretentious one at that.
I get that this kind of execution is supposed to be a psychological reflection, but dragging it out for so long really wears out the novelty and fails to truly captivate me on the long run. And it just doesn't get any deeper or more meaningful than that, so I'm just seeing very convoluted narrative without any plot development nor philosophical weight to support it. It just doesn't feel tasteful.
So now, let's get to why this isn't really about love. Millennium Actress, to me, is really about the prideful history of Japanese cinema, with an uncanny love story as an excuse. The love story, with its excruciatingly corny final remark indicating "dude may be dead, it may have all been an illusion, but my feelings aren't, they're real" just fails to hit every mark for me. I'm much more interested in how cinema is depicted rather than whatever she's chasing after throughout. And I do feel like that's part of the point, which makes it so unfulfilling for me. Such a simple story with this convoluted narrative needs to be much shorter to be more effective, either that or if you've ever decided to talk about cinema history extensively, you should at least pick something more powerful and even epic to support the narrative (like the film "Labyrinth of Cinema" for instance).
If you enjoyed it give it a score that fits perfectly. I would do the same.
Anime is all about enjoyment. But then you have those people who write a whole novel about how ''bad'' an anime is.
And yes, if your average is around 4-5, On god.. What are you watching? Either their taste is garbage as hell or they pick the worst animes out there that no one knows about. Lmfao the people who upvote the reviews where they give a low score are basically just as dumb as the one who wrote it. It's sad how people deal with anime nowadays. Everything is about ratings, PERFECT PLOT and what more.
Just enjoy it maybe?
