The most beautiful series in anime history
THE ARIA SERIES
The Animation | The Natural | Arietta | The Origination | The Avvenire A peaceful world, kind characters and a lovely place to live. A touching story with great, majestic moments, funny times and scenes which will leave you tear-stained. Stunning visuals and an unforgettable, soothing soundtrack. What can you ask more of a Slice of Life show? Whenever you’re sad, stop being sad and watch Aria instead. It mends your soul. A few shows could fascinate me on every aspect, but only Aria has this magic, this feeling that you watched something really memorable.
Pre-2013
!!! My all-time favourites !!!
Death Note Really. This show is too good. It was the first time I encountered a „serious“ anime and I’m glad that Death Note was this very first one. Many will criticize the second half. I think the plot is just consequently and new characters were necessary at this point.
Elfen Lied Polarising like no other show, Elfen Lied really challenges the watcher. It’s gruesome and brutal, yet endlessly sad and tragic. Technically outdated, its destruction of hope and joy still continues to haunt me.
Toradora! After a long break, I got curious about Toradora’s main heroine, Taiga Aisaka. She and her friends brought me back to the Anime train. Needless to say, Toradora! is my favourite Romance series. Gloriously funny, heartbreaking moments, and always on the edge between realistic and overexaggerated comical elements: Toradora! Is my standard for Slice of Life and Romance series.
Spotlight
Guilty Crown Yep. Guilty Crown has too many flaws to be considered as great – the story is sometimes a mess, the character development is… arguable. But why am I loving this show so much? Maybe it’s the stunning visuals, or the best soundtrack I’ve ever heard so far, or the serious, tragic undertone of the series. Love is hard to understand at times, and Guilty Crown definitely belongs to the rare shows which I cannot help but love despite all logic.
Angel Beats! When you love every single episode of a show, it has done something right. Starting with light-hearted vibes, Angel Beats! reveals the pasts of the heroes bit by bit, until you will be brought to tears. Why is this amazing work so short?!
2013
Fall
Anime of the Season
Golden Time (Comedy, Romance) Ah, sweet times. No stale highschool setting, but an university! That should be enough to give Golden Time a try. And additionally, the relationships are bittersweet and always nice to watch.
Spotlight
Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova (Action, Sci-Fi) Although the plot is a lot different from the manga’s, it still contains the interesting world concept. Fights which are focussed on the technology rather than some random asspulls (okay, in the end there is still one), very pleasant characters, I liked it!
Usagi Drop (Slice of Life) (non-airing) Awwww! This show is so adorable! The very special and warm art style fits perfectly in the mood of the life of a bachelor and a girl.
Anime of the Year
Nagi no Asukara (Drama) There were a lot of good animes this year, sequels as well as new ones: White Album 2 was beautiful, Arpeggio of Blue Steel surprised me with an interesting world, and of course, there was Shingeki no Kyojin. But even the latter didn’t move me on such an emotional level as NagiAsu did. The visuals were sparkling and shining, the music like the sound oft he sea, and the story, while still being a Slice of Life/Romance show, brought some very new elements into this genre, which usually holds few surprises. The hesitant and childish behaviour oft he protagonists may be a flaw, but keep watching – after the first half, the real conflicts emerge.
2014
Winter
Anime of the Season
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei (Comedy) Soo many tropes! But, I still enjoyed it. It’s a romantic Comedy, with a secret little extra which is kind of unexpected…
Spotlight
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Horror) (non-airing) Lots of tension and psychological elements. A thrilling plot. And BEASTLY characters. The 2nd season is a must-see as well!
Spring
Anime of the Season
Isshuukan Friends (Slice of Life) A sweet short anime about friendship and never-ending love.
Spotlight
Berserk (Fantasy, Action) (non-airing) Fully able to bring the power and epicness of the manga into motion, Berserk is an exceptional fantasy seinen.
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (Comedy, Romance, School) (non-airing) Lovely with a consistent high quality, but no real highlights.
Summer
Anime of the Season
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Comedy, School) The ultimate chaos group! Outstanding characters and never to be taken seriously!
Spotlight
Psycho-Pass (Action) (non-airing) A stylish dystopia with enthralling action and sexy characters.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Magic, Drama) (non-airing) Unbelievable! Starts slowly, but it will absorb you, and after that, you will never look at the Magical Girl Genre as before again!
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Comedy, School) (non-airing) I’m a sad man. Boku wa Tomodachi always appeals me. I can’t help but celebrate each joke. Save me, please…
Fall
Anime of the Season
Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru (Magic, Drama) Some minor flaws and a very slow build-up, but it rewards patient viewers with a firework of emotions in the finale.
Spotlight
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Drama, Music) Live and love, mourn about loss, but keep going! The tear-inducing finale is the crème de la crème.
Baccano! (Historical, Supernatural) (non-airing) What?! The author has to be a madman… and a genius! Brilliantly convoluted and the atmosphere is outrageous.
Anime of the Year
Barakamon (Slice of Life, Comedy) Sword Art Online II, Psycho-Pass II, Tokyo Ghoul, many great names (re-)appeared this year. But my Anime of the Year is little Barakamon. The chemistry between Handa-Sensei and the girl Naru is ineffable. Barakamon has so much to tell, while still being entertaining and heart-warming. The great voice acting deserves an extra mention as well!
2015
Winter
Anime of the Season
Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (Comedy) This season was so strong! In the end, I chose Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata to be the best of them all. It parodies the harem genre so well, the jokes are a stunner, and the insight in otaku culture couldn’t be made more enjoyable. Pick your main heroine now!
Spotlight
Death Parade (Psychological) A difficult topic, gorgeous graphics, and mysterious, thrilling characters. Death Parade isn’t perfect, but it’s exceptional – exceptionally strong.
The Rolling Girls (Slice of Life, Comedy) Light-hearted, colourful, and hilarious. You may not love the over-the-top and pointless story, but The Rolling Girls is one of the best proofs why anime exist.
Shirobako (Comedy, Drama) Getting better and better with each episode, you can clearly see the effort and love which the creators invested in this anime (about making anime.) With tons of great people who support the story, Shirobako shows a new side of epicness without the need for battles or a worldwide disaster.
Fate/ Zero (+ 2nd Season) (Action, Fantasy, Drama) (non-airing) Excellent build-up and character development in the first cour, until all hell is let loose in the second cour. Tragic, disgusting, honourable, innocent figures: They are all here.
Hibike! Euphonium (Music, School) The characters in this show feel so natural, their dialogues are top-notch. Gorgeous landscapes and fluid animation combined with first-class directing provided by Kyoto Animation make this anime really remarkable.
Spotlight
Grisaia no Rakuen + Grisaia no Meikyuu (Drama, Psychological, Harem) Just forget the first season, Grisaia no Kajitsu. Both Meikyuu and Rakuen bring you the dark side of the Grisaia franchise while having a perfect sense for pacing. The background story of main character Yuuji Kazami is as disturbing as drawing, plus Action à la Hollywood – that’s how you do it, 8bit!
ef: A Tale of Melodies. (Drama, Psychological) (non-airing) A show for real savourers. The tragic, depressing story by minori and the avant-garde style of SHAFT result in a picture drama where every second is pure art.
Summer
Anime of the Season
Gakkou Gurashi! (School, Horror, Slice of Life) Okay, if you absolutely detest Moe elements, skip this and move to my Spotlight section for the alternative AOTS. But be aware that you'll miss one of the best constructed shows this year. Gakkou Gurashi! is beautifully written, subtle and brutal at the same time. It's a Slice of Life show with shocking revelations, it has sweet and innocent characters within a cruel reality. The tension in the final episodes is absolute madness. This season was very strong, but Gakkou Gurashi! tops them all with great pictures and clever directing.
Spotlight
Castle Town Dandelion (Comedy, Slice of Life) If Gakkou Gurashi! hadn't existed, Joukamachi no Dandelion, despite its unpopularity, would have won with ease. It is such a feel-good show where you will love all the characters, period! The innovative story involving nine siblings with supernatural powers offers enough material for funny or dramatic episodes, which never get boring.
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers (Adventure, Fantasy) Thrilling and entertaining. A simple story which has a perfect build-up. The character designs are fantastic, but the grave technical issues were a bit of a nuisance. Overall a very good show though.
Gatchaman Crowds Insight (Action, SciFi) Holy shit. The first season was almost impossible to beat, and after the first episodes of Insight I almost gave up. However, the story became more and more complex and cruel, and the plans of our heroes, especially Hajime, were just too awesome. What a ride about human empathy and apathy, social dangers and individual independence. The soundtrack gets a new touch without losing its groove, and that's all I wanted from the second season.
Shokugeki no Soma (Comedy, Ecchi) And finally, I want to mention Shokugeki no Soma: Food Wars! More enjoyment is hardly possible. You have to like Ecchi and exaggerated Comedy for this show, but if you do, this probably belongs to the top 3 of the year. Jaw-dropping meals, sophisticated images, crazy humour, J.C. Staff totally nailed it. Sometimes it's just too much, but nonetheless Shokugeki no Soma remains as a strong show which keeps its level and even raises it as the story progresses.
Autumn
Anime of the Season
One Punch Man (Comedy, Action) Nothing much to say here: One Punch Man is simple and great, refreshingly different from the majority of today's anime, and never to be taken seriously.
Spotlight
Noragami Aragoto (Action, Fantasy) While the first season couldn't convince me, the second was very solid. The characters were much more likeable, the antagonists finally had some depth, and the overall quality was like usual – a typical Bones show.
Anime of the Year
Blood Blockade Battlefront (Action, Fantasy) The long wait for that last episode was totally worth it! Kekkai Sensen is the Uber-anime this year and my definite AOTY, despite other very strong contenders like Gakkou Gurashi! or Shokugeki no Soma. Awesome superheroes, a messed-up yet super-detailed version of New York, crisp action, glorious comedy, a clever plot, all packed in an old school-influenced style with modern touch. A second season has to come – I want to see much more of Hellsalem's Lot.
Well... not that extreme, actually. It's more like the "Back then, anime was art. Now, anime is trash" kind of mindset which pretty much adapted from Miyazaki's viewpoint, therefore one of "Miyazaki Syndrome". That said, I respect the man quite a lot and what he said, despite controversial and kinda like an old man's rant than an opinion, actually have some truth in it.
Idk. Usually, like you, I always manage to find at least one seasonal series that is worth watching to my taste. Fall; shigatsu, Winter; Death Parade, Summer; Kekkai Sensen and Ore Monogatari. This spring... not so much.
I've always wanted to watch monogatari series. That said, talking about style, you might wanna check out Tatami Galaxy. And oh, I forgot to mention you that beside the three anime Aria, Mushishi, and Haibane Renmei, there is one episodic anime that has a good reputation for its atmosphere and story just like the three; Kino no Tabi. you might wanna check it out also.
Yeah, I am currently strolling around the internet to search for a good quality anime that was once in the past. Also,
I know. Indeed, the anime did a very good job. I watch the first episode as well, actually. But having read the manga, I don't find myself wanting to watch more episode ^^' Still, the way the first episode give subtle hints (cracked windows, people in the fields that not walking normally, the writings on the board) is quite a good job. Also the cross. The damn cross. Again, having read the manga, I'll let you know that the cross is a serious business. And do prepare yourself some tissues and a strong adrenaline. Gakkou Gurashi! is quite a big deal of emotion. Big. Deal. Of emotion.
You can also said that the reason I don't wanna watch gakkou gurashi is simply because I don't wanna experience the same emotion leak; and now it's animated.
They don't get me much also. Yeah they're hyped and looked strong, but tbh they're not something special. I've watched the first episodes of some anime; Gangsta is a good action show, but that's that. The pacing is somehow slow, also. Charlotte... well... It's typical Jun Maeda work, maybe I'll marathon it instead later.
Hmmm... that's the first time I heard the name Joukamichi no Dandelion. I'll try it, maybe. As for Rokka, hmmm, I don't really like a fantasy-adventure theme... but hearing you said that the character doesn't spout "nakama power" thingy makes me wanna check it out.
Well, that's that. Though my priority list is still, like I said, the "old" anime like I already mentioned. Idk, back in a couple years ago, there seems to be quite a lot of good anime... Not that I think that now we don't have good anime... But things like Aria and Mushishi came out a long time ago, and I just don't see today's anime can ever came out with at least the same quality like them.. :/ Idk, either that, or I already infected by the Miyazaki Syndrome, you know what that is?
Second; a good commenter in ANN commented like this: More ARIA is more ARIA. I will take what we can get. I choose to agree with this comment.
Third; they may only have a normal OVA runtime per eps, ~24 minutes
This season? Really strong? Eeeehm... the only interesting thing I see is Gakkou Gurashi! and I already read the manga soooo...
Some might be strong, like gangsta, shirayuki-hime, ushio to tora, and the hyped charlotte... but Idk, I just can't feel the urge to watch them.... Maybe it's just me tho; with a new ARIA on sept, an upcoming new shinkai movie at 2016, everything that airs this season feel... stale.
I actually want to watch some past-time anime; I haven't completed Haibane Renmei, The first two season of Mushishi, and some other watch like; Ping Pong, Tatami Galaxy, Omoide no Marnie, etc. So I prefer to complete them first....
But still, do inform me if you find somethin worth watching this season :3
I thought that Akari's promotion to become a prima was told clearly... You know, the part where Alicia brought her to a very beautiful place after going through some narrow alleys, then pull out Akari's glove, giving her the title "Aquamarine"? Just after that Alicia then announce her retirement from Aria to work with the Association. Sad thing, especially the part where Akari found no one in Aria and thought Alicia has left already T_T
All character in Aria were somehow likeable (loveable, even). Idk, probably those that goes to Aqua were all good people, and the a**holes bad people were all left in earth? :P On a more serious note, from the undines (the single trio, the prima trio) to the man trio (Al, Woody, Akatsuki) they have this... special traits in them that is very loveable and fitting the story atmosphere. Also,
Akira x Akatsuki
Al x Aika
But yeah, Akira is by far my favourite prima. The most loveable. Her progress from a "no-talent" single to one of the best prima is impressive. Her classic strict-but-loving characteristic is very well-handled too.
The musics in Aria, eh?
nuff said.

It's sad to see that Aria is something which you'll never experience again.
You have a point and I know you are correct, that it is human to make mistakes but I still am bothered when I do nothing to invoke hate yet still get trash talked. I will show you an example of it:
Expand the comment chain on "Critical" and you can see 2 pathetic kids trash talking both Goku and I, using throwaway youtube accounts thinking we would not know who they are. It is the same 2 people that are from some guild "hP" on EU servers that were dancing in front of me with the guild "Just Bad Gameplay Not [RNG]" lol
I would not mind if you added me at all and I'll probably get around to the Aria series sometime, I just haven't been in the mood to watch a low-action slice of life lately so it's technically on hold for now but it's on my watching list just to remind myself that I should be starting it soon.
Lupicus pisses me off, but it's just because of a few reasons. The first being that I've solod/killed him so many times that I just don't have the patience to deal with the stupid RNG garbage constantly where he does like 5 autoattacks in a row or uses a really bad attack order, spawns max swarm counts constantly and whatnot. It's not amusing to me and it's frustrating but for the wrong reasons. If they wanted to make Lupicus difficult I would rather them do it in a more meaningful way other than make him spam nonstop autoattacks, like having him keep his previous phase attacks in all phases, so he would not lose a skillset on any phase. This would make phase 3 a challenge instead of it just being a joke where nothing is threatening except his autoattack.
The second reason is that people have really high expectations for me I guess. When I first started streaming it was a lot more laidback and I was basically the only active PvE streamer, but as I started getting more popular and other people started doing the same stuff as me I get judged pretty harshly now. If I have a bad night and people get to see me die due to lagging out or just not focusing enough, I worry about getting flamed and trolled a lot. Whether or not I like it, it's the way that it is.
I see you have fully exposes yourself to a true beauty that is Aria. It's OK, it's common to be at loss of word when you're exposed to a beautiful thing like Aria. I, for one, need to re-read and re-watch Aria for a couple of times until I fully satisfied with it.
Episode 9. friggin' EPISODE 9. Mankind was too late to explore the deepest sea, is too early to explore the space, but is just in time to see Aria: The Origination episode 9. Props to Junichi Sato and Amano-sensei to be able to make one of the most beautiful moment in anime.
I think I'll start with a foreword while you're recovering;
Aria is a simple series of daily life, but not your ordinary daily life; a life in a wonderful world called Neo-Venezia, the water city inspired from the old earth's Venice, Italy.
The life in Neo-Venezia, which actually supposed to be set on a "futuristic" time, is actually rather old; their main transportation is boat instead of flying cars, and the way they contact each other is by hand-written letter, instead of iPhone 10. When people needs to do things, they go out and do it instead of do it in their houses using internet.

I'm from earth, and cities everywhere is beautiful and very organized. Everything is very orderly. Unlike here, people can shop, work, and do everything from their house. It's very convenient. And yet, the way an orderly and convenient city looks gives me an unsatisfied feeling.
-Aqua, chapter 1 page 25-
Aria, not only it tells you the beauty of everyday life, it tells you that you can find beauty in the old-time ways of doing things.
Now, what can fill your inner emptiness...? I want to suggest Haibane Renmei because the atmosphere feels the same, but I only 3 eps in so I can't really tell. Though, I encourage you to try it. And its theme is different from Aria, mind you. Haibane is a more... complicated. A bit.
Tbh, I find Mushishi strangely relaxing yet interesting. It has a completely different theme from Aria, but its ability to evoke your emotion by using atmosphere, art (visual and audio), and story is almost equally the same. Since you are the type of guy who like series that can evoke emotion, you might want to try Mushishi.
Wow. Also I just checked your list and I am shocked, because you are the only person who has contacted me from my stream that rates anime on a different scale than like 7-10 and actually bother to give things proper ratings, which is nice for people that are looking for new stuff to watch. +1 to that, I like it!
Part of what motivates me besides streaming is that there is a tournament coming up that I'll participate in so I have motivation to look for the best strategies with my friends. I also am excited to try for more records again since I had a lot of fun getting the last one and I'm really happy that warrior is finally a fun class to play again and doesn't have terrible damage anymore. There were things about the last update that made me mad, but almost all of the warrior changes were fantastic and for the time being I'm able to enjoy myself
I mainly get my images from websites that hold a collection of fanart and official art. Places such as zerochan, Yande.re (can be NSFW), and Safebooru (SFW version of Danbooru). I've hyper-linked the respective websites with Aria picture results. I hope you find some good ones. Good luck! :)
Haha, hahaha, hahahahaha (I'm laughing in tears, mind you)... yeah, it's quite a punch really...
In the anime, most of the episode consists of Akari's activity in the planet Aqua. You can say "nothing really happens", but actually each episode show just what wonder can be uncovered in daily activities, especially when you're on Aqua. If I may suggest you, watch Aria at night time, with 1-3 episodes/night. Marathoning this will not do any good. It is something that you need to take bit by bit, slowly, while you're sipping your tea.
BUT! It has it moments of feel. And when it does, it doesn't know what the word "brake" means. Most of those feely moment is in Origination, and damn, it even has feel in a happy moment ;_;
Ah, you're still alive after all! I thought you've drowned in your own tears after watching KimiUso! :P lol jk :D
Of course I made that meme on my own, haha... your secret is safe with me..... or not.
Aria, huh... You're asking my recommendation? hmmm....
I mean, seriously. Despite the 3 season Aria is the anime adaptation, there are some parts that they don't adapt and only exist in the manga. But despite that, the original story made by the studio is just as good as in the manga. I recommend both.
If you're planning on staying on the road of drama/SoL, then Aria is the most suitable. If you're asking my opinion, even KimiUso looks like an anime made by noobs in comparison to Aria, no lie! :P
lol, tbh, uploading is easy, it's the re-uploading stuff, that I hate. That's why I'm kinda lazy, when it comes to re-up requests :D But someone's gotta do it and in this one-man-show it has to be me.
I see. Allow me to sum up that experience of yours in a picture.
Here you go.
Not only chapter 43 is out. There has been an unofficial translation of chapter 44. The translation is quite messy, but readable. Go to mangahere.com or mangabird.com to see it. Read the last two chapters, and let the feels flow through you.
But gotta admit, chapter 44 feels like a simple epilogue. A good one, but the real climax is chapter 43. Reading that chapter was quite a shiver ;_;
Ah, the anime is gonna end next week, huh? I haven't watch shigatsu straight from ep 17, cos I plan to marathon it. Well, so for next week I'm gonna marathon it, and I guess...
As for review, eh, maybe yes maybe not. Writing review is not really my thing.. :/ but who knows, maybe I'll get a mood to do it later. You should try write a review though.

Aria, huh... You're asking my recommendation? hmmm....
Here you go.
Not only chapter 43 is out. There has been an unofficial translation of chapter 44. The translation is quite messy, but readable. Go to mangahere.com or mangabird.com to see it. Read the last two chapters, and let the feels flow through you.
But gotta admit, chapter 44 feels like a simple epilogue. A good one, but the real climax is chapter 43. Reading that chapter was quite a shiver ;_;
