An explanation of my scores:
10/10: Along with being masterfully crafted in terms of its narrative, a 10/10 has to resonate with me on a personal and emotional level. I'd rather rewatch these than start something new most of the time. I think back on these experiences fondly and some have even impacted my real life to some extent. Although nothing is perfect, they're perfect enough for me.
9/10: Phenomenal shows that I love to pieces. Brilliant ideas with great execution. I consider these favorites, despite the fact that they don't resonate with me enough to be a 10.
8/10: Very great shows I have few issues with and the positives far outway the negatives, but it didn't connect with me enough or doesn't achieve anything instrumental enough to get a higher score. Usually pretty memorable.
7/10: Solid, good anime that I enjoyed. There's still quite a bit of problem that holds it back, but the positives outway the negatives by a good bit. Not very memorable experiences usually, but they were fun while I watched them.
6/10: Slightly more positive than negative. This is the score I use when I have a 50/50 between things I like and dislike. Generally not very entertaining or held back by problems.
5/10: Basically inoffensive/neutral. Not good or bad. Usually boring, or held back by a lot of issues, like being generic or not fully utilizing its potential.
4/10: Actively bad shows with a lot of elements that I disliked, with minor things I liked saving it from being terrible.
3/10: Generally atrocious. One or two decent elements or ideas but nothing that comes close to making it worth watching.
2/10: Embarrassingly horrible, also works as my "it's so bad it's good" score.
1/10: This is offensively terrible and made me upset when watching it.

Here are some anime that are generally considered well written: Galactic Heroes, Lain, Texhnolyze, Utena, Rose of Versailles, Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong, His and Her Circumstances
BTW, I'm also interested in making a list of my favorite terrible anime. I feel like most people on MAL aim to watch all the classics and miss out on watching hilariously bad anime. Have you seen this masterpiece OVA? It's only 45 minutes and its free on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wAVpcvIrQM
Not to mention that before Utena he helmed Sailor Moon S, which had the first openly lesbian couple in a TV anime.
Ikuhara: (Kicks open door) “Did someone summon me? I thought I heard someone say lesbian Catholic school girls!”
In its perfect form, Elfen Lied would be a somber, psychological drama about a serial killer who at first believes their murders are justified but is gradually haunted by guilt. Then the serial killer finds themselves in a dilemma where the only relationship sustaining their humanity is their love interest, but they murdered the family or friend of that love interest, so if they confess their crime to alleviate the guilt, they ruin the only relationship they care about. Then the loved one immediately forgives the serial killer and the killer goes through a dramatic rebirth into a new person.
So the 1800s Christian melodrama Crime and Punishment is basically what Ultra Instinct Elfen Lied looks like.
G-Gundam is pretty disliked by Gundam fans because it goes completely against everything Gundam is supposed to stand for and is just dumb as hell. This is all completely true, but it also breathed fresh air into the Gundam franchise after ZZ and Victory Gundam had the franchise on the brink of death. G Gundam was actually very popular in Japan in its time. Despite being moronic, it's also a love letter to older giant robot anime with fantastic directing, art, soundtrack, etc. A lot of talent worked on that glorious trash including Hideaki Anno who did storyboarding and apparently ghost wrote some of it.
Elfen Lied is the anime that had the largest impact on me personally and is my all time favorite, although it has an absolute multitude of flaws. The manga is irredeemable garbage, but the anime took a trash manga with a bad studio and no budget and made something memorable. Mamoru Kanbe was rather Quixotic in his attempt to take a manga as bad as Elfen Lied and try make it into something beautiful, but you have to love him for it. Elfen Lied was never popular in Japan, but found a cult following in mostly Latin America and Eastern Europe during the 2000s. Today, the fandom is fairly small.
