My Favorite Anime of All Time:
My rating system:
When evaluating a show, there are generally two things I contemplate – how ambitious, meaningful, and commendable I think its artistic goals are, and how effectively it manages to articulate those artistic goals. I do not dissect works of art into a set of flaws and merits, or a cluster of individual aesthetic elements which may or may not be relevant to their goals. I see that as a very reductive approach that does an extreme disservice to the complexity of both art and our relationship with it. Instead, I try to judge them as holistic works, prioritizing their integrity as story and message. I will not punish a show like Evangelion for having few tonal issues and narrative cracks, when its goals are more universal, creative, artistically compelling, and thematically interesting than virtually anything else I've seen. Great art is transcendent, and it seems rather pointless to me to evaluate it on an arbitrary numerical scale.
- 10 - Transcendent. A show whose value can't be measured by numbers. One that embodies art's transformative power. It profoundly resonates with me on a deep, personal level and informs the way I view myself and the world.
- 9 - Exemplary. A show that is among the best this medium has to offer. A masterpiece.
- 8 - Excellent. A show that demonstrates a significant amount of depth or is really, really entertaining.
- 7 - Good. A show that's regularly entertaining and well put together, but didn't manage to impress me.
- 6 - Decent. A show that generally succeeds at achieving its artistic goals, but is either uneven or unambitious.
- 5 - Mediocre. A run-of-the-mill show that doesn't try to differentiate itself, or one that has potential but was badly executed.
- 4 - Poor. A show with few good elements or an interesting idea, but is too flawed to be considered average.
- 3 - Bad. A show with one or two redeeming factors, but its weaknesses heavily overshadow its strengths.
- 2 - Awful. A show with no value or redeeming qualities.
- 1 - Offensive. A show that's not only terrible, but also insulting. One that I consider a vile existence and a negative influence on the world.
