I'm sorry if I came off as a bit direct and harsh. I was trying to answer your question about how Banana Fish constantly hinges upon the theme of rape and power through the direct examples and parallels on the villains, it probably didn't do anything to help (that was my bad judgement). The others also tried their best in their own way but it probably did more bad than good. It could may as well be a series that wasn't meant for you considering how contrasting of a series it was compared to your library. I think why I favoured Banana Fish so highly is because of how honest and raw the emotions are depicted (some parts of the story are flawed but the emotions felt are there and unforgettable). It's very old school story telling (much like a Hemmingway or Salinger synopsis), the story is shown as is and how people interpret it is up to their own judgement. There isn't any pandering any demographic (as much as it seems Mappa obviously used their previous YoI fanbase to attract more fans), it's not fluffy or feels good if you get what I mean.

I think during my first encounter with the series as a manga, it left little impact in me besides it is what it is (mind you I started not from the beginning but the subway fight which was a thrilling experience on manga). It wasn't until a bit later that there was something magical and unique in Banana Fish. Overall the anime was a good ride and enjoyable, at the very least to the point where you clearly wanted to understand more and commented on it.

I highly recommend the manga if you're still interested because besides the repetitiveness and no breaks pacing of the anime which I think are the most glaring flaws, the manga will definitely give you a new outlook into Ash's world.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
