The last case kinda ruined the whole essence of the show, rushing things along and leaving too many loose ends behind. Finally somebody pointed out the exact issue but also respecting the good elements of the show.
love your great pretender review, i felt the exact same way watching the final arc; such a disappointing way for an otherwise cool show to jump the shark.
very eloquent and well written stuff. :)
sorry to see you're still getting backlash from people who can't handle seeing opinions that contradict their own lol
keep on keeping on
But that is fascinating. Lip shape??? That's definitely my new excuse :D
I tried the baritone horn or something, which I guess is pretty different from Oboe. I'm sure in reality, my sound was highly average for an amateur, but it's so much more unsatisfying compared to piano. It really takes a band or orchestra to make wind work, whereas piano is such an incredibly versatile and powerful instrument on its own. I imagine practicing to be a super dreary experience, but when you're in the group it has to be orgasmic. And how badass to play your own reeds x_x.
I'll be keeping the Cowboy Bebop advice in mind. Funny how you had the same experience...
Anyway, I'll be frequenting MAL a lot less now that the semester is starting. Had a blast talking to you (hopefully same goes for you). If you ever publish another review, which I hope you do, I will be sure to gobble that shit up. And hey, if you ever do want to visit Austria, or need to escape debt collectors, feel free to get in touch!
Tbh, I only got a few episodes into Cowboy Bebop... the pacing is just too slow for me :(. But I mean clearly, it's a work of art. Such subtle dialogue, methodic and consistent characterization, and of course the jazz (this + great pretender definitely building a picture of your music taste). And it tackles some serious shit. 100% will be trying it again. I'm curious, what made Cowboy Bebop a ten for you?
And oh my god, Oboe?? Isn't that suuuper hard? I tried wind once, the most beautiful sound I managed was akin to the hoarse wheeze of a tuberculosis-infested frog. Also cramped my jaw.
I can totally relate to composing - I compose for film and piano (as a hobby ofc).
Anyways, hang on in there, alright? Once you open your praxis (in Austria, naturally) you'll get rich by being the only psychologist in town able to relate to teens through anime
Bruh if a high schooler told me they were doing meaningful research, I would be highly skeptical of that... but what you did sounded pretty fun tbh, besides the writing it down of course.
And I appreciate your respect so much, I love teaching... imo, a purely STEM field requires infinitely more patience tho. I've been to public school in LA - I've seen how the educators are treated, and I've read it - and there's no way I'd have the guts to be a teacher in the USA (at a public school at least). There's a lot of focus on filtering teachers by competence instead of educating them properly, using idiotic metrics like standardized test scores... it's not just incredibly ineffective, it's criminally inhumane, and it creates a slew of perverse incentives. Gotta keep those Gates Foundation donos rolling in ;)
Your major story makes me so sad D': isn't that kinda ruining music for you? God I hope not. Do you play an instrument, is that a duty too? Debt is a concept I can't even imagine and I don't wanna. Austria has pretty progressive politics - I pay 140 at the start of each semester and that's it (also get all sorts of federal financial support). And no, there is no minor. Although I do actually really like that concept, wished I had one :/
So safe to say, I have tremendous respect for any young person in America. Double that if they have Cowboy Bebop at a 10
Yep, I'm at Uni studying to become a Maths & Computer science teacher. Did 4 semesters of pure comp science... lost my soul, pondered the meaning of life, then switched before I commited sudoku. But the only official research I did was in high school - it's this thing in Austria called "pre-scientific thesis" (even that's an overly generous name), and mine was a comparison of the Finnish and American secondary school system (which is very very very fucked).
But psychology is soooo cool, I was really close to choosing that... If ur actually doing research in psychology, I'd genuinely be interested to learn about it. But I do understand if you don't have time, because I've seen ur plan-to-watch list and it's bigger than my master's curriculum
If ur in college - doesn't that mean you have a major AND this minor-thingy too? What is your minor :D And is it worth the pain?
Thank you!! And don't sweat it, I'm totally down for convo atm :D
So sounds like we're really on the same page on FMA... Yeah, don't get me started on female characters in anime. I also thought that in FMA, the women where super cool, but just like the dudes, they didn't leave a lasting impression. In the end, I just kinda forgot everything quickly, you know? The only part I remember vividly is Ed asking Winry to marry him, that was handled so charmingly :D
And I thought I was missing some deep philosophical subtext (that's the shit I'm looking for), because to me it just turned out to be more philosophical *aesthetic*, which is a problem anime suffers from A LOT. Anyway, I'm rambling and we've all moved on already...
I'm sorta curious now - what are you studying? My guess is on STEM from what I'm hearing
Oh and now I'm disappointed I don't get to read cringey high school tags lmao
Oh god I have such bad experience with research papers... had a lot a haters too, mainly my professor.
Imo it's a shame you have only one review - have you ever considered doing one on FMA? Because I didn't like the show as much as I expected, and it's exactly my kinda show, too! I feel like maybe I missed something... so am interested to hear ur thoughts on that, if you ever feel like it
Also I didn't know tags existed, but then I saw them on your profile and now I love them. Yours are great btw, if you ever read mine you'll recognize the influence. And you're welcome :) thanks for replying!
Beating a dead horse here, but I thoroughly enjoyed your Great Pretender... I guess "rant" is the most appropriate term :D
You expressed all of my thoughts eloquently and have a phenomenal writing style. Your review reads so smoothly! There's clearly lots of passion and personality injected into it.
Boy, I'm having such a hard time coping with the end of season 2... I'm more confused and disturbed than disappointed, but you hit it on the nose. I'm so sorry for all the 14 year olds in need of therapy commenting on your work, hope it's not affecting you too much. (The haters can't stop reading cause it's too engaging, hehe)
loved your Great Pretender review. while i still enjoyed the show a lot (as i am a fairly surface-level viewer; not very skilled at critically evaluating a story), your review helped me understand why so many people took issue with the last arc. i am extremely disappointed in the community for the fact that your review isn't the most popular negative one, considering how much more coherent and helpful it is than the one above it.
these people leaving rude comments (without even stating why they disagree) certainly didn't read your review long enough to grasp anything other than "4" and "bad end," so i hope they're not getting you down too much.
nah it means your the typical type
a carbon copy of millions of random anime fans who lack any taste or supreme observation
and cant evaluate things correctly .
you probably rate things according to how much you enjoyed while its fine to do that its shameful as a reviewer to do that
