Hmm, so you only reserve your drop list for the lowest of the low? Man, it must not see some use. At least you don't use your PTW list, so I guess On Hold does work well enough for that purpose. I mean, it's so vague, it could be used literally for "Eh, not interested in awhile" (how I use it) or just kinda the "trash bin" to "let it die", which is how you use it.
Some of your dropped list, I just checked, have you dropping midway (I only know of Scrapped Princess though, never watched it) where you cut off at 6/24. What's the story for something like that? Surely not filler heavy and you didn't see the ending. So yeah. Enlighten me.
There's FAR too many anime I've watched and dropped at the final episode or close to, where I should've saved myself the time before getting to that point.
These were shows I was optimistic about, bored at the time, so.... I guess kinda like you, I also have a case of the Binge, but only when I DON'T like something. I remember marathoning them because it was like "God, just get them over with" and then I realized how insufferable they were to me. (The two I'm referring are XxxHolic and El Cazador De La Bruja).
When I truly love something, I ready and/or watch very very slowly and take my time. And while I used to binge trash, now I just don't ever bother.
We're about the same age, so I'm sure you know by your 30s you don't need to be wasting any of your time on bad anime.
And god, I hate the mindset some of the kids here have "YOU CAN'T DROP SOMETHING UNTIL YOU'VE WATCHED ENOUGH OF IT!11"
Yeah, bullshit.
In those two scenarios, I almost watched everything and I got no more out of it watching to 25/26 vs dropping it at 2/26.
Kenshin was an interesting case: the anime jumpstarted its adaptation far too early. The first third of the anime was a loose adaptation of the source material. Close enough, but intrusive filler abound and not as good.
The second half however was almost 1:1 from the manga, zero filler, high production value, and it's what put the anime on the map. By this time, the manga had finished this arc, so it could be adapted properly.
So, then what happened thereafter, right? They found the groove, continue it.
Nope, the final arc at the time was only halfway done, so... filler, filler, filler, filler; so much filler, it literally nailed the lid on the coffin before the final arc could even be brought to life. Hell, there was so much filler, the story integrity was compromised (it had to take place right after chronologically, but with all this filler, it had now been months and months in anime time, so it wouldn't fit even if it was adapted).
It's an infamous example of filler literally killing an anime. And I assume productions like that led to this new 12 episode season format they do now.
(But yeah, on my list, it has it dropped at like episode 49, which is exactly where the Kyoto arc ends, and it's my highest rated drop, haha)
Oh god, Inuyasha is insufferable. I watched it a long time ago on Adult Swim. It's one of those ultra loose narratives I was referring to. That in the end the story doesn't even really matter. It's really an excuse for fangirls to swoon over the bland romance. How far did you get into that? I quit by the tail end or so too ("The Seven" or something)
Never heard of Kyou kara Maou, but I looked it up; haha, wow that is hardcore BL aesthetic I've ever seen, haha! Blatant. What happened with that one?
I've heard of Black Clover, but know nothing about it. Is it a comedy, like a sitcom or something? I know people also excuse something like Gintama in that respect, that meanders endlessly, and in these cases, it is more excusable, as it's just "more of the same" and that's what all you really want out of it.
Question, I have some series recorded that aren't favorites, but are things I sort of like; the original Dragonball being one. I am only a fan of Z very early (where it should've ended, as I grew up with it), but nothing past that. Power crawl shonen is the worst. But the OG Dragonball is just a fun little comedy show. BUT... oh lord, its anime filler is insufferable.
So.... while I was recording my version, I simply just.... edited out the filler. And watching it that way is actually enjoyable.
Ever done that yourself or wanted to?
It's not butchered like Dragonball Kai, but everything is there. I'm not against anime-only scenes, just FILLER, that literally waste time.
This is a big difference between typical shonen shows (One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, etc) that opt for long filler ARCS, episodes, etc, and one of the best anime adaptions ever, Yu Yu Hakusho, that only adds to the sparcer manga, with many moments not happening there that only happen in the anime, and it does so much to further flesh out the story and characters WITHOUT intruding onto the story with filler.
Filler is tricky, but I try to use that word to exclusively refer to "padding that offers nothing" vs "anime-only content", which might not be in the source material, but is welcome.
Phew, sorry for going off so long! But I had a lot to say! Is the length okay? :P
"Black-listing filler heavies", like yeah, that certainly limits down the ones with actual stories vs ones with stories that are so meandering as-is, filler on top of it only accentuates its issues.
That's my take on it, anyway.
Does this generally mean you research something a bit before you decide to watch, in the off chance you get super invested?
I think by just chance or feeling, I tend to avoid or drop filler things right off anyway (I notice other flaws; there are a lot of red flags as mentioned above), but the only one on my list that I dropped due to filler (it also never finished due to said filler) was the Kenshin anime. Not sure if you know the story behind that, but that's a pretty infamous example.
