I am a writer in America
I base my grading scale on the following; character designs, aesthetic appeal, ambiance, consistency, story, flow, and many more elements. I score animes in comparison with others from he same genre as opposed to comparing between genres. I watch all genres and am always open to recommendations. Those elements can carry a score up to 8. I reserve 9s for animes that capitalize on certain elements exceedingly well and those that simply appealed to me strongly. 10s, I reserve for animes that have original concept elements that inspire me to include similar aspects in my own stories or anime that appeal to my ocupational passions (Bakuman and Shirobako).
I want everyone to watch everything that I rate a 10.
If you're looking for a strong anime, I'd offer them my 9s
If you're just looking for a good anime, check out my 8s
If you just want to try out some new anime, check my 7s
If you are planning to watch an anime and it is in my 6s, ur good to go
Eveything 5 and below did not appeal to me or they're just bonus stuff. The tv shows in that area, I was pressed to watch by certain individuals that I was partially obligated to listen to. I wouldnt finish an anime otherwise unless I felt it was good.

I kinda get where you're coming form since in the beginning I couldn't bring myself to watch old shows as they seemed dated and irrelevant, but then I got tired of the same scenarios and tropes that never went anywhere and slowly pretty colors became secondary to the writing.
Why not put the show you don't finish in you dropped list. There are plenty of shows I couldn't get into and that's what the dropped list was made for.
