That's awesome!! Which field did you study? One of my friends is currently studying visual arts, more specifically graphic design. I just do art as an occassional hobby – I did attend an art high school though! (˵•ᗜ•˵) I just started last semester as an English philology student at a regular university, and honestly, my experience has been pretty underwhelming so far. I don't even know what I expected, but this was not it. (๑•﹏•) In addition, the school has proven itself to be fairly bureaucratic and the guidance for first-years is lacking. It's pretty frustrating not being allowed to attend a course from another field because "I haven't been granted the right to study said field", even though the course info said nothing about there being limitations when I signed up for it. It also makes no sense, because the exact same course is open to people that aren't even registered students at the university as long as they pay for the course?! (ಠಿ_ಠ) Fun club activities are the one thing binding me to this insane city, haha. I'm a member of my university's anime club as well as a riichi mahjong club one town over (it's affiliated with a different university but the activities are open to anyone). (˶◜ᵕ◝˶)❀
Exactly!! Being entertaining is the main duty of fiction. I'm glad you enjoyed Kuroko enough so that it eventually found its way to my watchlist through your recommendation~
No problem! Elfing has its challenges for sure, but I enjoy doing it. It keeps me busy and gives me a valid reason to procrastinate on my other, less fun responsibilities. (˶ ¬▽¬ ˶) Also, I get to see lots of profiles and presents in the process!!
I'm surprised as well! I actually have a friend who strongly dislikes the show, because "it's too unrealistic and the characters are superhuman". However, when I was watching it myself, I realized it was just his usual exaggeration, haha. He tends to get heated about realism in anime, especially in sports shows, because he used to play football himself. We agree on a lot of things when it comes to anime, but I'm more lenient compared to him when it comes to letting things like "plot convenience" or "emotional whiplash" slide. (ꈍᴗꈍ) Do you have irl friends who watch anime?
I haven't seen the other two, but I've actually been meaning to rewatch Ping Pong The Animation! I remember it being good, but I feel like I didn't appreciate its full nuance back when I watched it for the first time. I had a period between 2019 and 2021 where I was basically watching all kinds of decently well-known shows that often come up in discussions just to say I've seen them and that led to binging a lot of things even when I wasn't in the mood to watch anime. By the way, here's your Santa's profile, go thank them! I worked my elf magic. ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ They had indeed changed their username, even though we strongly advice people to not do that during the event period, because it creates unnecessary trouble for both elves and participants. Happy New Year 2025!! Thank you for your letter and recommendations. I imagine you must've had a hard time with me not liking avant garde and having rated some of your favorites pretty low, but I think you selected well and I appreciate you giving me all kinds of options to choose from!
So, why have I not watched Kuroko no Basket yet despite being well aware it exists? That is a very good question, because after picking it up upon your suggestion funny how I asked for anime on the shorter side to be able to finish something in time for the reveal yet ended up picking the longest recommendation first regardless, I quickly discovered it to be very much up my alley indeed! I'm probably going to end up giving it a higher score than you did, haha.
I am a big fan of beautiful boys, but looks don't mean much without a personality to back it up. Fortunately, this anime didn't disappoint in either regard! ദ്ദി(˶–` ̫´–˶)✧ The characters in this show are all well-designed, likeable and eccentric individuals that have great chemistry and fun, interesting dynamics with one another. "Passionate, flashy and haughty guy who is also actually kind and caring in a slightly tsundere manner" is a foolproof recipe for melting my heart, so it's no surprise I've grown especially fond of Taiga Kagami, but the fact that even the characters with less screentime have distinct personalities and quirks is what makes it impossible to be bored even during the anime's less intense moments. Also, I really appreciate that the obligatory female character™ of the main cast gets an actual personality and an active role regarding the team instead of being reduced to a pretty face to drool over like many other shōnen sports shows tend to do even if Momoi sort of comes to fill that role later on.
The aforementioned colorful cast of characters also laid the framework for absolutely priceless humor. Seriously, I wasn't expecting the show to make me laugh as much as it did! The effortlessly, sometimes even unintentionally hilarious comedy had me unexpectedly burst out in audible laughter multiple times!! Although, I have to admit that sometimes my mind ran off writing jokes faster than the author could. For example, the detail that Kagami, who just returned from America, is actually a regular cheeseburger vacuum at the local McDonalds had me rolling on the floor in a way that would make the average Japanese person look at me with concern in one eye and disdain in the other. 。゚(TヮT)゚。
Aside from at times wanting a bit more detailed descriptions of the basketball terminology and strategies used, there's not much criticism I'd have to offer so far. I'm not one to care much about plot convenience or things not being realistic – the rule of cool is what fiction is for! Also, while the visuals are indeed slightly janky, just as you warned, and the story would definitely benefit from better animation and direction to further amplify the intensity of the sports sequences, the games pack plenty of a punch narratively when it counts, so it didn't have time to bother me much in the long run. In fact, this anime feels like the perfect balance of silly slice of life and exciting, adrenaline-filled mind games that few series manage to fulfill simultaneously. In short, thank you for getting this show onto my radar!! ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ ) I'll definitely be finishing the rest of the adaptation as well (because the players of Seirin have already stolen my heart) and will keep you updated on my thoughts once I do. I'll also keep your other recommendations in mind for when I'm in the mood for those kinds of shows!
What gifts did you get from your own Santa(s)? What did you think about them? (´∩。• ᵕ •。∩`)
Happy New Year btw!
Just wanted to drop by and say thank you very much for the Christmas Santa recs. Really enjoyed reading your message and appreciate the thought and effort put into the 3 anime you recommended. I agree that whittling it down to 3 can be difficult. I had that problem giving my own recs!
Just started watching K-On and really loving it! Definitely the kind of cute girls doing cute things shows I like to relax to, and your recommendation gave me the motivation to finally start it. I think I'll like the other anime you suggested as well, and will get to them soon. Hope you got a good gift as well and had a nice holiday period.
All the best in the new year and thanks again.
I get it completely, I too am a little behind with my recommendations from Santa. take your time and i hope you enjoy them (◡‿◡ *)
