I'd taken a quick look at Gunslinger Girl before, but it lacked this subtle atmosphere (which is exactly what you said)
As you mentioned " the series makes the characters' eventual doom quite clear". This is a pity because it's one of the reasons I liked Haibane so much.
Although it still sounds very good indeed! I like your comparison Purgatory vs Hell on Earth and what you said about finding happiness in this crazy and cruel environment.
I haven't heard of Ghost Hound before. I'll check it out :)
Serial Experiments Lane was the first one I looked at after finishing Haibane Renmei.
While it seemed unusual and interesting, it didn't seem to be too similar in what I liked about Haibane either, but I have to watch a bit more of it to know for sure. Like Haibane Renmei it doesn't seem like a show where you can easily determine how it's really like just by looking at a few scenes.
I've tried out Aria before and it wasn't uninteresting, although not everything I've heard about it was too positive.
Apart from the mentioned tranquility, is there anything hidden / more complex about its atmosphere which you don't sense immediately?
I'm sorry for my baby English. It's not my native language, but I'm trying.
I bet there's really nothing like Haibane in regards of this specific atmosphere, which is neither too happy, although the scenes suggest so on the surface, nor too obviously dramatic, nor is it dictated or entirely clear whether it's really sad or not and you can feel this.
I loved that!
It's not really a bad thing I guess if there's nothing too similar, otherwise we'd be watching clones all the time, I just wish it would have been a bit longer.
Thanks again for your post and all the details!
thanks for your very well written Haibane <-> Shinsekai Yori recommendation!
I wanted to ask: did you discover anything even more similar to Haibane Renmei since then?
Thank you :)
