I don't find Accel World particularly baffling in terms of why people like it, if you're 12-15 and not been exposed to that much anime, I can easily see why you'd like it. Back when I first started watching anime I remember distinctly liking some shows that I would vehemently describe as terrible now. Shows like MM! and Omamori Himari, back when I hadn't yet heard the term ecchi or harem.
Kotoura-san I think falls into the same kinda bucket, I think particularly when you're young and haven't been exposed that that much anime (or media in general) the obnoxious levels Kotoura-san goes to in order to evoke an emotional scene isn't obvious, and it feels fresh. I'm not sure I'd like Clannad as much as I did if I rewatched it now because I'm now much familiar with the techniques used.
I will admit though, my review for Accel World initially was set at a 4. Later on I was curious if I could change the score after the fact, and changed it to a 1 as a joke, but was so delighted at this I never changed it back. My reviews were posted back when the unhelpful button existed as well, which stopped a lot of terribly written reviews from rising too high.
At a guess, because it appeals to people with low self worth because it the show is a power fantasy where somehow the main character is still a loser? We'll never know.
Hey, and we think pretty much the same about Kotoura-san too, you wouldn't believe the amount of shit people send me who have issue with my review (actually give there's a comment literally doing exactly that maybe you would).
