By looking into it, I find it quite hard to propose something appropriate. I am lacking a bit in this category. There is one that I think fits some of the criteria but it falls into the top 50 category. The Monogatary series, starting with the one called Bakemonogatari. I found the character development and discussions in the shows really interesting and unique. The categories under which this anime falls are a bit misleading as the focus is on the characters and the artwork is unconventional. On the other hand though, there are some ecchi elements, so maybe not your style.? Yappari..! It's quite hard! The other one I spotted was Mushishi. It's a complete different story. Really great artwork, lots of wisdom but you could say character development is slow since the series are episodic. I am also currently watching it but I think it's something that I can recommend!
