Did that not happen in Tonikawa? Was that not literally every single joke in this show? Because, if you hadn't realized, every single criticism of romance that you made also applies to Tonikawa.
An easy way to describe this show is two grown adults playing house (you know, the thing kids like to play). Two grown children getting embarassed about every little thing. I'm not totally against that, but if that's the whole show I can't see why people think it's any more unique than a regular highschool romcom.
---- "Comedy usually ruins romance because its just a slice of life with extra steps."
Isn't Tonikawa at least 30-40% comedy? It definitely classifies as a comedy by this point. I mean, I wouldn't call it wholesome OR funny, but they were clearly trying (and failed) to make us laugh with this quote:
"Girls are this soft?! Human hands are this warm... and feel this good? This is marriage?! It's fantastic!" - Nasa Yuzaki
I mean, who talks like that? Only creepy perverted generic main characters like Nasa would say something like this. I can't imagine a good romance show having cringey dialogue EVERY episode like this.
I will give it credit though. You're right. I guess you could say that the characters aren't completely stereotypical. Tsukasa is a cute character. Well, the main character was perverted throughout the whole show but it was toned down to the point where people actually think it's wholesome (again, refer to the previous quote if you still think Nasa isn't a creep).
But while the characters are not completely cliche, what IS cliche is the dialogue, which doesn't do a good job at presenting these characters as unique. Though, that's kinda unfair to say all this, since this is just a "cute fluffy show" and I shouldn't be analyzing it or be so critical, right?
Sorry if I sound angry at you, I'm not. I'm angry at the show. People hyped up this show like it's the best romance of 2020 and I genuinely bought into the hype, until I watched a few episodes and realized I was wrong. I just want to see the romance genre doing better next year.
I see a common pattern where people are defending Tonikawa because it's a good "romance" show, not a good "comedy". I hope that's not just because they can't name reasons for liking the show. In any case, it seems like romance is the biggest strength.
Wouldn't you also say that being just a cute romance show makes it a very shallow and empty show? Like with every genre, there needs to be something else beside it. Action and Adventure. Mystery and Psychological Thriller.
Romance and Comedy.
Or, if there was only one genre, and it was romance, I sure as hell wouldn't be picking Tonikawa as one of my favourite shows of all time. Tonikawa is listed as both Romance and Comedy on MyAnimeList, and there sure are a lot of really really bad jokes in here.
"Your skin... is like an iPhone X.”
"Girls are this soft?! Human hands are this warm... and feel this good? This is marriage?! It's fantastic!" - Nasa Yuzaki
"He recalls the body warmth he felt yesterday."
And people actually think this is a wholesome show? Really? Or, if it isn't wholesome, it sure as hell isn't funny.
It doesn't matter if the show is set in highschool or after highschool, because at the end of the day, this show is extremely generic. Tonikawa could be set in highschool, and they'd still do the same things episode after episode. Going to the bathhouse, going on dates, the setting does not make it any more unique.
How did we let such a boring show get such high praise within the anime community? I wanted to see improvement in the romance genre for 2020. We're heading backwards at this rate. The year started off strong with Kaguya-sama's second season in Spring 2020, and now look where we are. An unfunny romance anime with stale romance and bland comedy.
We hope you enjoy your stay here and invite anybody you know who also enjoys watching Isekai.
How are you BTW?
