You know what you need to know.
You're Next
Home Invasion slasher
Simon Barrett is a very talented but wildly inconsistent screenwriter, and Adam Wingard being his equilent from a director perspective. Get him on a bad day you have 'the temple' and 'Blair witch 2016', but on a good day you have the likes of 'The Guest', 'V.H.S.', and in this case: 'You're next'.
It's a simple, well trodden premise. A family reunion is disrupted by excuse #105: a group of masked men want to break in and kill everyone in your isolated home. The conventional fight for survival save for a single fact that breaths an entire O2 canister of life into the set up.
'What would happen if the killers weren't the best ones in the equation at killing?' That's not to say that the killers are incompetent; just that our protagonist of choice for the night, played by Home and away(yeah, that meme)'s Sharni Vinson, doesn't make the contrived choices that see many a slasher movie character get axed in the kisser.
As the bodies start piling the situation revolves into a battle moreso than devolving into a hunt; making it a sharp blade in a sea of dull machetes. Other than that, the effects are good and the cinematography tidy. It's not the best the duo have made, as I believe The Guest has that honour, but You're next stands proud at the door covered in blood with an axe.
7/10; that's an interesting way to use a blender
