Stuff you may wanna know before looking at my list: Personal Rating System: 10 - All of my very favorites 9 - All of my favorites within each size group(Movie, 2-6, 11-15 etc.) 8 - Anime/Manga I think are a must watch/read if you like most 8's on my list(though genres are still important when deciding) 7 - Anime/Manga I think you should watch/read if you like the description and genres. 6 - Anime/Manga I think you should watch/read only if you really like the description and genres. 5 - Either there is not much good or bad about the Anime/Manga or the good and bad balance out. 4 - These Anime/Manga had a few more things bad than good 3 - These Anime/Manga had a lot more things bad than good 2 - These Anime/Manga had a ridiculous amount of bad in them. They flatten the good to where it can only be viewed if you see it from another dimension and even then it is almost completely pushed out of view. 1 - This spot is reserved for the worst of the worst. Only few ever reach this dark corner of my rating system. Dropped Policy: Look at the tags for notes of why I dropped each. Most of the time, I just dropped it to read the manga or play the visual novel because I think it is a waste of time to do the anime as well. Sometimes I just do hate the anime though. Check out my comments section of some of my completed shows/manga to find out(vaguely so I don't spoil anything) why I gave shows their final rating. Stuff about me: The story of how I got into each medium: First Manga(2009): Pokemon Adventures How: Was watching Pokemon Retrospective when he talked about the pokemon comics and how different and cool they were. I discovered manga, instantly falling in love. First Anime(2010): To-love ru(Technically DBZ/Pokemon but I was too young for that to count) How: Found out there was a show of a manga I really liked. Discovered that anime was a thing. Hated that anime, but loved anime as a medium after that. First Visual Novel(2014): Akai Majo How: Saw how short it was and thought the description was interesting, so I jumped in. Wasn't impressed with the story but saw the charm of the medium. First Light Novel(2015): A Simple Monitoring How: Had been wanting to test the waters that are light novels since I kept finding good but cut-short anime based off them. Saw that this one was one volume and gave it a shot. First Web Novel(2019): Peerless Martial God How: Was ready to try a new light novel and found PMG. I'm pretty sure I didn't even know it was a web novel when I read it. It ended up being phenomenal which sent me on a web novel rampage. If the date I watched/read a show/manga is blank, that means I watched/read it before making this account. If the date is from before I made this account, it is just a guess of when I watched/read it. Any date after account creation is completely accurate. Types of things I will not typically watch: 1. Comedies without any other genres Reason: Comedy is completely subjective in its ability to make you laugh. I tend to not laugh at most comedy and therefore get nothing out of it. 2. Romance/Rom-Com movies Reason: A romance show is fine but when you try to do a romance movie, you just can't convince me it is real. They don't have enough time to build it and thus it crumbles under any skepticism. Rom-Coms are literally always the same in movie format. Granted they add gimmicks to try to convince the audience they are something more but they just end up being lame and repetitive in the end. 3. Slice of lifes with either just a gimmick to keep people watching(ex. all slice of life music shows) or slice of life with nothing else. Reason: All slice of lifes with no outside genres have little to no actual elements. They are only good for a cheap emotional feeling and I'd rather watch something that gives me an actual stories. The gimmick ones are individual based and you could really like them if experienced that exact thing ie you are/were once in a band and the show captures how you felt. 4. Anime with manga that are much longer than them. Reason: An anime will always either end 1.in a way that is made up and doesn't correspond with the manga, in this case it will screw you over if you are trying to pick up in the manga where the anime left off, or 2. it won't end at all and the problem with this comes in my next point. The anime will almost always add some stuff that the manga didn't have. Why is this a problem? Because a lot of people seem to rage at any additions they don't like which makes them never want to read the manga. The most common rage-enducing addition is filler which is added purely to make time for the manga to publish. Other times they will add ecchi which nearly everyone complains about. Then there is the addition of comedy which is just a flip of the coin whether the individual will like it or not. And finally, there is dragging out of fights e.g Dragon Ball Z and basically everyone seems to complain about this. Ask me anything. Read my blogs for opinions on various topics. I will also debate on something with you as long as I don't think you are purposely arguing with me dishonestly. For example, anyone who is completely ignoring my points, acting like I never made any to begin with, forcing me to talk in circles or repeatedly strawmanning the crap out of me. Misc. I was big into anime years ago but have mostly shifted my focus to manga. I have quite a few reasons for doing so. The more anime I've watched, the more I realize that most are just advertisements for manga. Thus the majority of them either have horrid endings or none at all. On top of that, there are tons of manga that never get adapted into anime that are amazing. But perhaps the biggest reason is that manga are just much easier and faster to read through. Life is short. Shifting focus onto another hobby of mine, I translate Japanese text into English. If you have a request, you can either contact me here or on my discord (listed below). If the work is small, I'll prob get around to it fairly quickly. It just randomly stops in the middle of the arc. It had a good few things going for it. It wasn't as good as their other work, The Gamer, but it had some things The Gamer didn't. The main character was slightly better in my opinion and the element of the mc and his god that was just starting to develop was quite unique. Now I might go read the series he dropped this to work on, Wizardly Tower. Return From The World Of Immortals 133/133, Score: 7.9/10 Start Date: 7/29/2020, End Date: 11/18/2022, Review: First off, this was basically cancelled. So, while it's not official, I'm calling it completed. It felt like a decent end point. Sure, his main goal wasn't achieved. But I never cared about that anyway. His transition between high school and college where he's become the peak of the Earth's martial world just seems like a natural place to stop the story. Sure, you could take it to the immortal world. Do I think this writer could pull off such a feat? No. I think it'd suffer in the same way RUIC is. And this writer isn't nearly as fun or clever as RUIC's. I think, to pull this off, you need someone who is much better at writing the cultivation world than they are the human one to even attempt it. But to actually talk about this, it bounced from pretty good to eh over and over throughout. It didn't really scratch my early RUIC itch I still have either. But, among all the other urban cultivator stories, this one probably had the 3rd best writer I've ever experienced. The Descent Of The Demonic Master Season 1 141/141 Start Date: 5/19/2021, Score 7.4/10 End Date: 3/3/2023, Review: This one had its cool stuff throughout but some of it got old pretty fast. I never liked his relationship with fmc so that stuff was just boring. It happened too often and dragged on when it did. And the badass-type mc got old pretty quick too. I mostly stuck with it for the larger story beats that I was waiting and waiting on such as the mc's struggle to resist going back to his former self. So I'm kind of glad season 1 finished so I can stop here smoothly. Reading: (IR = Impression Rating = How much I'm looking forward to continuing it. I've never found a work with a more annoying romantic subplot. The original romantic interest and her contemptible friend were quite bad but then they had to introduce yet another chick. So now there's two scumbags competing for mc, neither of which is remotely tolerable. Start Date: 10/15/2021, IR: 10/10, Notes: (ch. 27)The story has been very solid up to this point besides the issues that are always present in this kind of story (a.k.a. mc becomes superhuman rapidly but then discovers that the entire world is teeming with other, even stronger superhumans). It's probably the most-polished Chinese manga I've read. But the arc that's starting seems like it could be really interesting or really lame. The reasoning is really bad: Like in a few cultivation novels I've read, some super powerful person is connected to and kidnaps the mc's love interest because of course she can't just be a normal person; that would make them have to write a more unique story. I never like this premise. The focal character is never interesting enough to invest interest in, the thought of what the author might cook up for their development brings me pain (a.k.a. making them go through a training arc so they are conveniently powerful too or, mostly for Korean stories, disgusting things like ntr/rape) and the mc is reduced to a pathetic fool in love instead of focusing on the main fun of the manga, exploring and getting stronger. And, to borrow a term from Korean stories, this is the "discovering Murim" arc. That can be interesting if the author is competent and plans out a smart under society. I've only really seen The Gamer pull it off with moderate success. In every other story, Murim is just a boring side part to the stuff you really want to read. Update(ch. 45): The arc hasn't been bad so far. Unfortunately, it seems like there's going to be some kind of sport that he's going to do. Not sure I like that idea. I wish this stuck more to exploration. There are some interesting things that give me some hope so I'll continue for now. Update(ch. 113): That arc, thankfully, wasn't really a sport but a guise for a battle royale. It was pretty good. It hasn't really slowed down except a few times here and there since. Strongest Abandoned Son 175/? Start Date: 10/21/2021, IR: 9/10 Trample On The Immortals River 134/? Start Date: 10/26/2021, IR: 8/10 Everlasting God of Sword 127/? Start Date: 10/30/2021, IR: 4/10 Doomed To Be A King 60/? Start Date: 11/5/2021, IR: 8/10, Notes: This manga is pretty unique and fun. Nothing super complex, just an enjoyable read. On the downside, it abandoned the cool premise of "a system where, if you don't complete quests, you die" almost immediately. Sure, it could bring that back at any moment but it's so far in the background at this point that it may as well have never been a thing. It certainly could have been a more substantial story if it kept that in play. Supreme Yanluo System 82/? Start Date: 11/5/2021, IR: 10/10, Notes: This is really similar to a story I've been thinking of writing. That alone makes me want to read it. Put competent writing, great ideas and a fun mc on top of that and you create the perfect read for me. There hasn't been a dull moment so far. I just wish it had more chapters. I might look and see if there's a novel series of it. Supreme Mad Emperor System 12/? Start Date: 11/6/2021, IR: 4/10, Notes: I like portions of this manga. The ancestor returning is an interesting plot point that was thrown in. The protagonist being an emperor is one of the rarest starts even if it's based on the "incompetent inheritor mc, scheming evil brother" trope. The system isn't super creative but it's decent enough. Now onto the bad. The mc isn't as promising as he seemed to initially be. He was a man who had lost all hope and became suicidal after everything had started to go wrong in his life. That would be an interesting premise for a cultivation mc! Now he's just like "It's fun being an emperor!" He's lost all real substance. One of the most annoying things for me though is when scum characters are forgiven for their scummy actions because the character happens to be a woman and the mc is the "I must protect women" type. This story could have had her be an innocent who was molested by the person who used to occupy the mc's body and he slowly gained her forgiveness through showing how much he's changed. Instead it was revealed that she accused him of molesting her and forced his kingdom to cede land to hers for touching the back of her hand once because she didn't like how much of a weak perv the dude used to be. And now this piece of trash is going to be the main female character of this story? Disgusting. Martial Legacy 36/? Start Date: 11/6/2021, IR: 9/10, Notes: This manga could turn out to be amazing. It's off to a good start so far. The Chinese demonic lore is great and the plot is unique, not relying on many tired tropes so far. The only problem is that the pace is slow so many people will get impatient. I Might Be A Fake Cultivator 91/? Start Date: 11/6/2021, IR: 8/10 Back To Rule Again 156/? Start Date: 11/7/2021, IR: 7/10, Notes: (chapter 38)This story is nothing revolutionary so far. The fanservice is a little much at times, it relies on some tired clichés of the time travel genre such as revenge and, one of my pet peeves, the future changing for basically no reason rapidly and unpredictably because the author is too lazy to write a competent story w/o negating the mc's limited clairvoyance. Like seriously, part of the premise is that the mc was only a decent fighter in his past life so you don't even have to change the future to be even more powerful. It seems unnecessary but it's always the uncaused butterfly effect on steroids in this type of story. Anyway, this is a fun enough read to continue at some point. I've just got a lot of manga ahead of it in the queue.Update(ch. 156): I'm glad I picked this back up. It got a lot better since I last read it 2 years ago. The story really seems to be maturing into something decent. Though I still can't see the end game completely, it seems pretty promising so far. I'll go away for about 2 more years until the next arc is hopefully finished. First Class Servant 8/? Start Date: 11/7/2021, IR: 6/10, Notes: Unfortunately, the translation job drags this one down. It would be an alright read if I didn't have to concentrate to even understand some parts. Don't get me wrong, the story itself is not amazing by any stretch but it has potential to be good if it gets moving. Forty Millenniums of Cultivation 197/? Start Date: 11/7/2021, IR: 10/10, Notes: This manga is really unique. The world building is great, the mc is good and the story is progressing at a healthy rate. Unfortunately, the new chapters are now being done by someone who barely speaks English. It's better than some I've read; I can still at least make everything out. But this really hampers my enjoyment a little. I guess not enough people read this far so the translators dropped it or something. 3cm Hunter 15/? Start Date: 7/22/2020, Reason: This manga was kind of amusing at first but is getting pretty boring. I'll just move onto greener pastures. The Supreme System 40/? Start Date: 8/20/2020, Reason: This manga just has so many elements that are boring and only a tiny one that I like(the system itself). It's also starting the academy arc that is in every one of these Chinese martial arts stories and it'll probably turn out like most of them. Martial Arts Reigns 32/? Start Date: 8/22/2020, Reason: It's just dull. Not interested in the revenge plot or any elements of it. His cheat system is very unimpressive. He is very naïve and the plot is going nowhere fast. Reverend Insanity (manhua) 4/? Start Date: 8/24/2020, Reason: Reading the web novel instead. Strongest Anti M.e.t.a 19/? Start Date: 8/24/2020, Reason: This really had nothing going for it. The plot is barely there. The characters are stupid the mc tries to defend a village against an ever-increasing threat instead of simply moving them somewhere else. The mc is a piece of shit who tries to rape -- or at the very least molest -- a woman because she kept calling him a perv, steals her clan's entire vault of treasures without any remorse which'll eventually get the whole village killed and is an ass to people just so he can get more points from his system. The system is the most interesting part and it's not even impressive(I've seen the same thing done better in other stories). Mowang Yu Yongzhe Yu Sheng Jian Shendian 8/? Start Date: 8/29/2020, Reason: It's just boring. Nothing I'm interested in has shown up in the story so bye bye. Hero? I Quit A Long Time Ago. 10/? Start Date: 8/30/2020, Reason: I was really interested in the premiseof a hero who quit and is now just living his life while trying not to reveal his secret but they abandoned it within the first 3 chapters. His sister is annoying, his new partner is bland and he is just a disappointing, generic, overpowered Chinese mc. Metropolitan System 9/? Start Date: 9/3/2020, Reason: This manga is very slow-starting and the gimmick isn't amazing either. Legend: The Beginning 30/? Start Date: 5/22/2021, Reason: It started out okay and just basically went nowhere from there. Also, the main "love" interest for the mc is just obnoxious. He saves her from some guys trying to kidnap her and she lets him get beat up for it. Then he saves her and her sister from being sexually abused by some dudes and she's like "I guess you owe me for keeping your secret then." Her character type isn't enjoyable and just makes me wish she fell off a cliff. Banished Disciple's Counterattack 60/? Start Date: 7/6/2021, Reason: Like many chinese manga, the translation went to shit. If this has a novel, I'll read that but I'm not reading more of this disgrace of a translation. I am picking up attributes and items in last days ( The Last Hero ) 20/? Start Date: 10/5/2021, Reason: I feel like this manga has some good ideas but it'll get too bogged down in the mc collecting a harem of girls now that's it's been revealed that he transfers power to women when he bangs them. That formula can only really lead in that direction imo and, unlike My Girlfriend is a Zombie, it's just not creative enough to overcome that issue. Cultivating With An Immortal’s Memory 40/? Start Date: 10/6/2021, Reason: It may seem like I read a lot of this but each chapter is like two sentences. Anyway, this manga is like a cultivation fever dream. It has a few clever things very rarely but it's generally really basic and uninspired. Now that the plot has become "Collect a harem of women to get back to the immortal world" I've pretty much lost all interest. Cultivator Against Hero Society 35/? Start Date: 11/7/2020, Reason: The translation is derptastic and the plot, while unique, is also just strange. I feel like this one would be better if I could read Chinese but I'm not sure I'd read it even then. I Stack Experience Through Reading Books 30/? Start Date: 10/8/2021, Reason: This manga is trending downward a little at this point. It just meanders. Sometimes, it'll have a decent idea but mostly it's just doing stuff for no real reason just to be like "Don't you wish you were the mc?" Yes but that doesn't mean reading about it is interesting. I'll read a few more chapters before deciding whether to drop it or not. Edit: I just decided to drop it. My Master Is A Deity 20/? Start Date: 10/9/2021, Reason: This just really isn't going anywhere close to where I want it to. It's clever at times but mostly not much is happening. I Am A Great God 44/? Start Date: 10/9/2021, Reason: This one went from weird to pretty interesting to just kinda nonsensical and boring. If it weren't like reading somebody's fever dream, I might have enjoyed it. Invincible Xueba System 12/? Start Date: 10/9/2021, Reason: I'm just not feeling this manga. It has decent stuff in it but the overall plot is moving at a tectonic pace. The system being harsh on him and arbitrary is different and I like it. Too bad the world, characters and slice of life elements are so dull. Greatest Sword Immortal 26/? Start Date: 10/11/2021, Reason: This manga's translation got bad. The story is still decent but not amazing. If this has a web novel and the translation isn't equally as bad, I might read it. Strongest Leveling 12/? Start Date: 10/21/2021, Reason: A slightly-funny, meandering manga. Not much else to say. The game system is boring, the mc is a troll which is pretty funny, the story is pretty much nonexistent and the revenge is pointless when he's getting revenge for a person he reincarnated into instead of himself. The Underworld’s Broker 8/? Start Date: 10/30/2021, Notes: 3 chapters in and I'm already wavering on whether to read this or not. I'm interested in seeing the system but the mc and plot are completely annoying so far. His girlfriend cheats on him with another dude, let's the dude beat him up, doesn't explain at all why even though she have texted or briefly talked to him easily, and he is blaming himself for not being strong enough for her. Fuck that! I don't give a damn if his girlfriend is broke or the dude blackmailed her, neither is an excuse for not giving him some kind of explanation instead of breaking for basically no reason. If he had any backbone, he would move on. She's clearly not worth it at all. Maybe saving her from the guy is reasonable but still showing interest in her romantically is just contemptable imo. This better have a heck of a system or his character better improve by leaps and bound or I'm out.Update(ch 6): The system is pretty interesting. The story is still teetering on the edge though. They just introduced another contemptable woman. Even from her pov, some guy saved her from a ghost; clearly not knowing that she actually didn't want to be saved; and she slaps him for it. The only reason I didn't drop this is because the system says she's evil so I just hope this moron mc doesn't pursue her as his secondary romantic interest. And if the first girl becomes her disciple, I'm dropping it immediately. Update (ch 8): Okay so mc went from wanting to save and get back with his cheater gf to wanting to save a dying girl who's a bitch because they were both "betrayed by someone". Problem is, this guy never stated that his gf isn't an innocent angel in his eyes anymore so he shouldn't see it as betrayal. Is he talking about the guy he barely knew betraying him? Either way, it makes no sense at this point. Also, I guess that was supposed to be the ghost's description as "evil" even though it was already dead at that point and the girl was standing in front of him when it went off. So I guess the author is just kinda incompetent with showing the power off and writes scum bitches and then asks us to sympathize with them as the main motivation for mc. No thanks. My Nemesis Has a Superpower 31/? Start Date: 2/2/2020, Reason: Moving this to dropped because it hasn't had a chapter in 2 years. Martial King's Retired Life (Manhua) 105/? Start Date: 4/24/2020, Reason: No chapters for 2 years. Hero Has Returned 9/? Start Date: 4/24/2020, Reason: I really liked the initial premise. A unique, dark take on what could happen after an isekai hero's journey. Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. The plot has more holes in it than Swiss cheese: All these heroes just happened to agree with the first one perfectly? The spear hero is just miraculously isekaid after the sword hero kills him. But nobody else? Of the millions of people he killed? The sword hero never has any doubts about what he's done? His goal doesn't even make sense. How can people be sad if you kill them all? Why stay in Korea if your goal is to make everyone miserable? Why isn't anyone from anywhere else in the world being isekaid? How does the spear hero know so much about how the sword hero's powers work in their world? He somehow knows that he can summon weapons at will from the other world despite sword hero not showing anything to him. And this is just the beginning of all the plot holes. We haven't even gotten started on how bad every single character is. The spear hero doesn't care about anyone and treats them all like shit but somehow we're to believe he is such a kind person. He's purely a sick fuck out to torture the guy who killed his family endlessly. His arc is pointless and predictable. Of course he'll find out it wasn't worth it at all in the end. You can basically take this criticism about every character except the blue-haired girl. All she wanted to do was live with the man she loved. But her arc lasted a chapter and now she's dead. Her arc was basically "People hunted down my husband and I because they assumed we were working with the sword hero. We defended ourselves by destroying their ships when they approached. Then, the spear hero came and killed us. The end." Damn, this story sure is stupid. To sum it all up, I'd say it's unique but written by an incompetent psycho. Devouring Realm 50/? Start Date: 8/15/2022, Reason: This manga was pretty good until the arc with the glutton and old dude. That was a snooze fest. And the route they're taking with mc now is really disappointing. Peerlessly Carefree 8/? Start Date: 8/15/2022, Reason: Now that I know where this manga is headed, I'm done. King Of Apocalypse 220/? Start Date: 8/30/2020, Reason: This manga had a lot of potential at the beginning but squandered it all trying to come up with weird shit to throw in every 10 chapters. A tip for the author: Try to come up with an understandable world and stick with it next time. A zombie apocalypse with a simple upgrade system is easy enough to wrap your head around. Introducing multiverses and time travel 100+ chapters in is just too much. Urban Rebellion 11/? 7/30/23 Above Ten Thousand People 55/? Start Date: 8/21/24, Reason: This was a really solid manga. Fun, funny and creative. Then it had to go ruin it with a revenge rape scene. A chick got a major character kicked out of his clan by seducing him and then pretending he was trying sneak in and defile her. But this doesn't justify casting a rape scene in a good light. The only reason they got away with it is because the characters were transformed into dogs. But they are actually humans so that excuse doesn't hold up at all. And then it shows their aftermath to rub salt into the wound. He is in a euphoric state which ruins his character for me completely. That basically means the guy gets off on having power and the mc will keep rewarding him for it. And her life is ruined forever because "the saintess" is worthless without her virginity -.-. The main problems with this are that this character is a main one so we have to spend a big portion of the series with him, and the artist created this incident so we wouldn't need a rape scene if they just didn't do the scenario in the first place. He created these characters just to have a comedic rape scene. Disgusting. It really makes me rethink all the depictions of women throughout this manga: They're always just there to be a set of breasts or a butt for the reader to stare at. I think this author honestly doesn't see them as real people. He literally killed the father and brother of a girl he showed as a fan of mc's books, leaving her destitute. Then never brought it up again, as if she got what she deserved or some shit. And this was after he got her and another girl drugged up and they had a lesbian fantasy scene. Cringe. His best depiction of a woman is just a generic girl who follows her master around and obeys what he tells her. So I guess that's a woman's place in this asshole's mind. Not to mention her character design makes her breasts spill out of her absurdly sexual outfit 24/7. Magic Level 99990000 All-Attribute Great Sage 26/? 9/20/24, Reason: This just got really boring. It started out as a pretty plain power fantasy but I thought it could maybe go somewhere so I stuck around for a while. But now it just seems directionless and pointless. It's really gonna be about him stopping calamities over and over? Hard pass. The Game's Top Troll 17/? 12/16/24, Reason: The mc was kind of interesting at first. Same with his power. But now he's just a scamming scumbag Plan to Read: Tales from the Age of Apocalypse 0/2 X-man 0/76 Astonishing X-men 0/35 Buffy Season 10 0/30 Updater Season 2 /? |

I also have to wonder why you think I don't like gory humour when I called Corpse Party unintentionally funny due to the overblown gore.
Hating a show is a subjective response unless there's something outside of the show that causes the hatred, it's not a form of bias. It's a reaction to the show. You seem to be under the Miss-impression that there's an objective level at which a show is good or bad. Which is not the case. Any questions of quality when it comes to media are going to be subjective. To use a very general example, you might look at the animation in something and think it's choppy, poorly done and uses too much repeated footage. Someone else might look at that same animation and think that it's stylized and artistic and not be bothered by the repeated footage at all. That difference could very well result in you saying the artwork sucks and the other person calling it good.
The problem with your definition is that it's really subjective. Someone doesn't bring up something you thought was good within a show, bias. Someone doesn't bring up something you thought was bad, bias. Maybe they didn't bring up those elements because they had no reaction to them? Maybe they had a more general statement that they felt encompassed that element and you made a distinction between it and the other thing?
It just seems tacky to compare racism/homophobia/able-ism to reviewer bias and it could easily be misconstrued as an unwarranted comparison on your part of a supposedly biased reviewer to Hitler.
"We may be confused here because I don't understand what you mean here at all. I agreed with the whole? What whole and when?"
Oh, you're confused. Let me try to simplify this, then. Basically, I'm saying that your statement was that you agreed with the overall "this is the quality of this series" but you disagreed in the sense that you thought that certain things should get more credit.
To put it in simple terms, a review bias is something outside of the work that influences the reviewer's view of the work. Racial bias, since you brought it up, is similar in that the person with the bias doesn't dislike a person because of any aspect of their personality but because of their race. Why you brought up racial bias, only you can say for sure.
And are you seriously suggesting that my reviews should go through every single scene, every single facet of a work? Because I could technically go through every single episode of every single thing I review and talk about what I liked/disliked about it in detail, but that would honestly take far too much time and it's more efficient and, in my opinion, more than sufficient to talk about what I disliked/liked about the series/film in general.
And that isn't the same thing as you tore down. You said that you agreed with the whole. My statement referred to your disagreement with specific parts.
If he was tired of being asked about it it would make more sense for him to give the intended meaning, if there was one. That would clarify the situation once and for all. There's also a really obvious issue with the "subconscious" idea. It's the very same problem with the argument that you can't prove something doesn't exist therefore it must. No one can prove that Anno didn't have some subconscious ideas that went into it, not without some way of delving into his subconscious mind. But by the same token I could claim that invisible pixies exist and that they can hide from infrared sensors and all sorts of others. You can't prove they don't therefore they must. It's an argument built on nothing. It's just a final, desperate attempt at grasping at anything. Then we have this idea that he's trying to protect all the interpretations. The trouble with that is that the statement that it's inherently meaningless is actively dismissive of them, rather than protective. If he had really wanted to safeguard them then he would have given an answer involving broad themes that could be interpreted in different ways rather than saying that it's meaningless. Because that would have given more validity to those interpretations instead of dismissing them. And that's why, from a critical perspective, those explanations don't hold up.
"You are just strawmanning me now. You would have to be an absolute idiot at reading comprehension to say that was why I said they were justified. They were not justified because you didn't like the thing they liked but because they found it both insulting and untrue. You are blatantly trying to make my argument look stupid and you can fuck off if you want to keep that dishonesty up."
The example is still valid in that context. The person I'm talking to could still find my statement untrue and insulting, which they probably would if they liked Twilight. Either way what it comes down to is that we disagree on the quality of a work of media. Which is still a stupid thing to feel personally insulted over. By that logic I should feel insulted by people who think Evangelion is complex because I find that idea to be untrue. Frankly, the only person who could justifiably be insulted by my disagreement with them over the quality of Evangelion would be Anno or one of the other writers who personally put part of their life into making it. Although I doubt any of them would feel insulted even if they saw my review just because they're probably used to hearing criticisms since it kind of comes with doing anything creative. And, like many other people in those fields, they have their fan base to balance that out.
It's not insulting to scientists at all. The only way to know what a writer was thinking or trying to do is by their saying so themselves. Which is why the term "word of God" exists in media to describe what the writer has said about the series.
"It's not like someone can say something they don't mean and have other motives behind it or anything(sarcasm). Also, it is demonstrably false to say that a person has never lied in an interview before, so how can you rule that out? I don't believe them but there are many explanations that work that NGE fans give. Once again, stop pretending there isn't a debate on this subject."
Again, there isn't a debate simply because there's no reason to believe that Anno was being insincere when he said that there's no meaning nor has he ever gone back on that statement in any way. Nor is there any reason for him to say it if he doesn't mean it. Acting like "well, he might not have meant it" is the equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and actively making noise so that you don't have to hear someone tell you something that you don't want to hear. It's just ignoring the facts, pure and simple.
"Let me paint a picture for you on how laughable it is that you, of all people, think you could share your opinion without someone getting mad at you: You walk up to a big Evangelion fan and tell them how you think all the characters are not endearing, complex or realistic. The robot responds "I have no emotion at all towards that extremely insulting thing to say to me. I find them good though." You then respond "Well, you are factually wrong on that matter." The robot agrees to disagree with you and walks away because you just said something super insulting and, somehow, expect anyone not to be mad at you. Somehow, you think this is how reality works."
Okay, now let me paint a picture on how ridiculous your idea of insulting is. I walk up to someone and they ask "Hey, what do you think of Twilight?" I say "I found it to be wish fulfillment drek with one-dimensional characters major problematic elements and noting of redeeming value."
They would be justified to feel personally insulted because I didn't like a thing that they liked. Which is stupid. It's not insulting to you at all.
Frankly, there is no real debate on it. He's said there's no meaning in interviews. It's part of the public record. I actually saw a piece that talked about it and the concept of the "death of the writer" since so many fans find meaning in it in spite of him. Trying to argue that he never said that when anyone can look it up is like trying to argue that evolution doesn't happen in spite of all the cases where it's been actively observed. You can do it, but you're going to be demonstrably wrong.
Or do you think that someone who actively ignores what the writer's said can still have a well thought out opinion? Just to be clear, I'm not saying that someone can't disagree with the writer and have a well thought out opinion. But there's a difference between thinking that they conveyed more than they meant to or that they did a poor job of conveying something and actively being in denial about what they've said.
There are indeed things that are based more on personal preference and experience than anything else. However, these things can still be conveyed to people with different views. IE: this worked/didn't work for me and here's why. I will grant that it can be very difficult to truly understand someone else's perspective in those cases but you can act like a civil adult about it. Share your opinions and agree to disagree.
Actually, I was trying to convey that someone can see why others might find a problem with something. For example, someone might like Highschool of the Dead but I'm sure they could understand why the fan-service level is a problem for other people. I liked Doki Doki Precure, but I can understand why some people found it to be overly derivative of the rest of the franchise. Even if I don't personally agree. I personally think that that derivativeness is largely well done homage. That being said, I can still understand why other people might view it as a flaw.
The same is true for NGE. We can all acknowledge that the writer didn't have any meaning behind his imagery. He's come out and said so. For the fans, that's a strength of the series since it invites constructed interpretations. For me it doesn't work and comes across as pretentious twaddle. You don't have to agree with me that it's a flaw to be able to look at it and say "yeah, I can understand where that comes from."
Sorry if I was unclear.
They may not equal emotional bankruptcy, however. Someone with a well thought out opinion is going to be able to understand why people might feel contrary since they know the flaws of the piece. Even if they may personally consider those flaws minor, they can understand why someone might have more of a problem with them. Which is exactly why there's no need for anger over someone not liking it.
It's an opinion over a piece of media, it's not something sociopolitical that's going to have an effect on anyone's life ever. As such it's really foolhardy to get actively angry over someone's purely subjective opinion.
See, the contrary opinion isn't any kind of threat to someone who themselves has a well thought out opinion. As such, they don't feel any need to get angry over it. They'll either choose to ignore it, request elaboration or offer constructive criticisms. Whether they think the contrary opinion was well supported/stated or not may impact which they do.
I'll just repeat myself, people with well thought out opinions have no need to become angry over someone daring to disagree with them. They can understand the other person's perspective even if they don't agree with it because they've thought through their own opinion well enough to understand someone else's perspective.
There are plenty of reasonable people who disagree with my opinions, including people who liked Evangelion. I've interacted with several of them at length. I've also interacted with several of the frothing, enraged people who are absolutely livid because my perspective is not the same as theirs.
In contrast, people who have poorly thought out opinions feel threatened by people who disagree with them because the differing opinion is a threat to them. Ergo they feel the need to go into conniptions about how the differing opinion is "wrong."
It's not just Evangelion fans who do it, and not all Evangelion fans do it by any means. There are fans of virtually anything who throw fits when someone doesn't like the thing they like and there are people who hate things and throw fits when people like the things they don't like.
There are other factors besides just having opinions that aren't well thought out but I've yet to see someone with a well thought out opinion who couldn't handle someone disagreeing with them.
