Lucky Star Forever
Ah... Oh hey didn't see you there!! Anyways welcome to my profile. I am just a science's guy who just enjoys.....no......who is passionate about Anime, LNs, VNs and enjoyment of life.
After an eight year long hiatus the ever famous Lucky Star manga has resumed publication and in a different magazine from now on.
Let's goooo!!! Let's pray to the Gods at KyoAni so that we can get a season 2 soon enough.
Best film of all time. Fight me on this if you can.
Hitoshi Iwaaki, Shin Takahashi, Oshimi Shuzou, etc.
Satoshi Kon, Masaki Yuasa, Tatsuyu Ishihara, Makoto Shinkai, etc.
Chiyomaru Shikura, Yuyuko Takemiya, Jun Maeda, Yukito Ayatsuji, Yusuke Kishi, Ryukishi07, Gen Urobuchi, etc.
Ah gotcha. I remember when fansubs came out and the internet was going bonkers hehe. And nice I haven't had a chance to rewatch the series. Did you see the news this past week though that the manga is coming out of hiatus? I thought that was wild lol.
And sure np! I love talking to fellow anime fans. I've been one for a long time. :)
Yes!!! I love her so much, she inspires me in my own art journey! And I need to check out more of Juns work, I saw Angel beats before I had decent taste and need to rewatch it hehe. I only started paying attention to Mangaka in more recent times and it's so fulfilling to watch their talent improve over the years
If you close your eyes to the original manga of my favorite shows or ecchi that I often flip through out of boredom, then I usually like school romcoms, comedies and something original that I stumble upon by chance.
As for VN, I usually try to get 100% on Key novels. And also try to read what the English translation gets.
Hi, I'm doing fine lately. What about you?
Don't worry about the late reply! I responded after literally two months so I'm one to talk.
Once again, thanks for making me rewatch Another, my girlfriend really liked it as well. I'll check the manga soon, I know Izumi has a smaller role in the novel and that's a turn off for me.
I was wondering which VN have you read and which ones you recommend the most?
Hiiieeee, so sorry for the late reply! May and June were brutal and I wanted to take my time to write a proper reply. Hope you’ve been doing fine lately, not my case, sadly.
Now, my opinions on Shin Sekai Yori and Another:
~Shin Sekai Yori~
I’ve watched Shin Sekai Yori almost six years ago (I’m planning to rewatch it soon) so I do not remember everything from start to finish in order to explain why I love it so much but I’ll try my best.
Shin Sekai Yori accomplishes to question and examine our morals, values and everyday life and at the end of several episodes you are left thinking about what you’ve seen. There are so many interesting themes explored such as the anthropocentric doctrine taken to the extreme of believing humans are gods; the level of untold evil present in the society from episode one, which everyone lets happen due to apathy, fear and even custom; the elimination of sexual orientation, people fallin love with people and not with genders; etc.
Nothing that the show presents you is unimportant and every aspect can be analyzed separately yet everything connects organically. Everything makes sense and everything is realistic and believable. I believe this kind of story could happen in our real life, sadly.
The character development is impeccable, successfully portraying our main characters going through childhood, adolescence and finally young adulthood. Of course some characters are more developed than others, Saki being the main star, but all of them are tridimensional and real.
The art is gorgeous at times, with beautiful landscapes, and crappy at others but that’s due to the budget so there’s not much room for complaints. In the end it serves its purpose and it manages to portray the wide range of emotions of each character correctly.
The music is wonderful, memorable and flows with the different moments portrayed in the show. The mix of tribal sounds, the vocal chants and the classical music fit Shin Sekai Yori perfectly.
All in all I believe Shin Sekai Yori is a masterpiece as it’s one of the most complex and intriguing shows I have ever watched and still think of it from time to time.
~Another~
First of all I want to thank you for making me rewatch Another. I now consider it a solid show and even recommended it to several people. I might even read the manga mainly because of Izumi! It was one of the very first anime I’ve ever watched, back in 2013, and there were a lot of things I didn’t remember correctly and many other things I didn’t appreciate back in the day.
Starting with its positive aspects I think Another does a wonderful job setting the tone as the ominous atmosphere is very well crafted, I watched every episode at night with the lights off to go with the mood and had a lot of fun with it. The haunting music matched with the beautiful yet ghostly gothic animation successfully portrayed the eeriness and suspense intended. Production wise Another certainly is top notch with the animation being it’s strongest aspect, the effort put in the details and in every single character is outstanding.
The story is very captivating and mostly well developed, with the last two episodes being the exception. As the show progresses the spectator is given little hints of the mysteries surrounding Class 3-3 and its terrible claminity and in the end the whole puzzle makes sense and you realize little foreshadows spread here and there. Overall it really is gripping and I was always looking forward to the next episode.
Regarding the negative aspects, I have two complaints which can’t really be overlooked and do impact the final score given to the show. The characters are one of the flaws the show has because even if they aren’t necessarily bad they certainly are underdeveloped, shallow and forgettable. I know 12 episodes is not much time to develop a handful of characters but shows like Land of the Lustrous, Akuma no Riddle, Anohana and the prime example: Madoka Magica, have proved this is possible. In Another, I think Izumi is arguably the best character (this is one of the opinions that didn’t change while rewatching) as she’s the one that feels more real. Her motivations are clear: protecting Class 3-3, and she does everything within her reach to do so; you sympathize with her feelings and understand were they come from: she has special feelings for Sakakibara due to the fact that she ties him to a special memory, and she holds a grudge towards Misaki because she feels she’s to blame for not respecting the rules (and it’s understandable given that Misaki never explained to her that the cursed started before she even met Sakakibara); her actions are rational: she is always doing her best to inform herself more about the curse, tries to keep the group united, even in the end she mostly keeps her head cool until she sees her best friend dead. That being said, I think Misaki is the most developed but that doesn’t make her necessarily the best. My main problem with her is her passiveness and her not conciliatory nature, given the extreme dangerous and stressful situation the class is going through I think she could have done more to help the rest, like for example expressing herself fully when Akazawa confronts her in front everyone, people aren’t going to guess the curse started beforehand if she doesn’t open up about it. Also, given her power, I think she should have tested her abilities and taken action as soon as she heard the tape instead of waiting for half of the class to die or go crazy.
My other critic would be the last two episodes in general. I do understand the reaction of the class after hearing the tape given the traumatic experience they were going through, everyone would be scared to death in their place and suspecting of Misaki is only natural because of her mysterious nature. However, the reaction of Kazami (the boy with glasses) was way too much, he lost his cool and became sadistic incredibly fast, like I would understand if he tried to kill Teshigawara (the blond bimbo) who betrayed him, but not the whole class (he killed Aki and Kyouko lesbian queens). Also, what about that old woman that went full Michael Myers? She set the hotel on fire, stabbed people and even killed her husband, and the explanation behind it was completely lame and out of nowhere. Plus, I hated the plot armor around Misaki and Sakakibara, it was ridiculous. I can understand that girl slipping because of the rain and falling to her death and Izumi saving Sakakibara just in time before Kazami killed him, but how conveniently Akazawa and Takako died when they were about to kill the two mains was complete bullshit, specially Izumi’s death was completely nonsensical. Finally, Reiko’s reveal was horribly handled, her double identity makes sense in the novel because we don’t actually see her but not in the anime (Game of Thrones did the same with a character in the books but logically in the TV Show they scrapped that plot twist because just by seeing the actor you could tell they were the same character), they could tried to keep it by changing her hair style and make up, but changing her hair colour was a stupid choice, also, her character wasn’t really developed so her death didn’t impact on the viewer as it was intended.
In conclusion I believe Another is a good show which serves its purpose and it’s misunderstood by many but could have been better with a different ending where Izumi lives.
I already finished these two!
And I really enjoyed Lucky star, there are so many references in it, and I noticed a lot of them, also the quotes of the fansubs help a lot, some of the references come from 80s and 90s that I don't know about.
If there's a slice of life anime tier list, I would probably put it in A tier, just below K-on for me in terms of ranking.
I actually heard of Lucky star for a long time but never checked it out, also I don't think Lucky star is the first CGDCT.
I think Hirohige is alright, a low 9 or high 8 for me, both op/ed are very great, it explore some of the issues irl, but it executed just "ok", it could have been a lot better, so I gave it a 9 for now, I may reconsider its score in the future.
