Ok, I just finished the sequel and I'm like??? at the ending.



I'm definitely sick and tired of unneeded sexual violence in manga, but also I just want women to have more of the spotlight and decent fledged out storylines. Like there are some manga that have a ton of fanservice, but I'm ok with it because the women actually get surprisingly decent writing. Change 123 is a good example, it has boobs and butts out in every chapter, but the women actually get to kick ass and have character/story arcs. If you want to see women beating the shit out of people, I'd recommend that one, but like I said it has a tonnnnnn of nudity. Otherwise, I've also been enjoying Aono kun ni Sawaritai kara Shinitai which is a Horror/Romance seinen with great character development of its female protagonist.

No, your review was exactly what I needed!! After finishing the series I was looking for someone who had similar mixed feelings as me -- I'm always ready for a certain degree of sexism/misogyny from seinen action manga, and I've read some series that were undoubtedly worse in that regard, but this one rankled me especially because Youko's writing was so promising in the beginning that it really made me fall in love with her character and her potential for growth, and just seeing that shoved to the side was so disappointing.

I'm halfway through the sequel right now, and I wouldn't say the sexual violence is worse (Misaki for instance hasn't gotten kidnapped or attacked even once so far, although it might still happen in the grand finale). But what is annoying is they're still not letting Youko kill anyone or even really win against any strong characters. I'll put the rest under spoilers in case you don't want to be spoiled:



I was hoping that maybe the sequel would shed some more light onto the vigilante field trip, but instead the mangaka just sweeps that all to the side and we just have "retired" hitmen vs. rival hitmen.

Really loved your review on The Fable! I had a similar experience while reading it: enjoyed a lot of it, absolutely adored Youko, and was miffed at how the writing just pushed her aside at the end. Overall, I think the ending felt very eh, partially because we don't know much about the Boss and the other hitmen for the whole "we're going to stop being hitmen because regular life is great and justice" thing to hit home.
