What is the difference between a cartoon and an anime? It's hard to say with certainty, and even harder without treading into the waters of Orientalism. To avoid using the "Japanese animation" argument, I have developed laws and principles to aid us in properly labeling animations. These will eventually get updated and improved as my understanding and research develops further on the topic.
There are 3 laws, which are truths I identify as fundamental truths which we must accept before then moving into the principles of distinguishing the two.
1. Anime is a artistic style of expression, notably within animation.
2. Anime is not geographically bound to any one region, nor exclusive to any demographic.
3. Anime is always a cartoon/animation, but not every cartoon/animation is an anime.
Principles of Anime
There are more principles to come. There needs to be 4 out of 5 of these principles to be considered an anime.
I. Identity - Must identify itself as an anime.
II. Visual Style - Must clearly contain elements of the visual style, i.e. exaggerated body features, large eyes, spikier hair, etc.
III. Dialogue - Must utilize inner character monologue as a storytelling device. Typically used to slow down the story and to emphasize details and characters emotions. Not typically used to progress the plot.
IV. Story - Must have some form of arc tying each episode together.
V. Limited Animation - Anime utilizes limited animation techniques.
That was a cool track. I've heard thousands of metal bands, so I'm surprised I never heard of this one before. I still prefer the solo on the track I shared, though. I don't think of it as dragging along; more like adding to the melody, epicness and depth of the song, especially with the slower parts near the end of the solo. It's just a random track out of countless ones, anyway. Here are some In Flames (my favorite band) songs you can look up (on Spotify, YouTube, etc.) if you haven't already heard them. I listed when the solos start too.
Goliaths Disarm Their Davids 2:59
December Flower 1:25
Zombie Inc. 2:20
Minus 2:21
Stand Ablaze 2:50
The Hive 2:46
Episode 666 1:39
The New Word 1:45
Leeches 1:41
Square Nothing 2:32
It could take months for me to put together that playlist (since I have so many other things to do), but here's a little taste. Hope you're okay with metal! The solo starts at 2:25.
I grew up in Virginia and moved to Michigan in 2007. I rarely use Spotify. My music collection consists of thousands of albums; mostly CDs I bought long ago and ripped to lossless digital format.
I came here to talk about guitar solos...and it turns out we live like an hour away from each other. XD I know what you mean about guitar solos. (I started playing guitar in 1996.) Still...there are some awesome ones out there. I'm tempted to put together a playlist for you with timestamps that skip to the solos. No idea when that would be ready, though. :P
Well unfortunately for me I just started watching it like a week ago. I just watched it really fast lol. I thought the movie came out back in August though? I'm surprised there's no home release yet.
I see that you saw the movie for Konosuba, I've been looking for it myself but I can't seem to find it other than people who've recorded it from movie theaters. I don't really want to watch it that way though because the colors don't pop the way it does watching it normally (and Konosuba is a very pretty and colorful anime imo).
