Well, it's great. Recently the story revealed that all of the released chapters are probably just the beginning of the main plot lol

Yep, I'll get to them someday sooner or later. I'm not really watching any anime lately, manga often feels more emotional and authentic. Also it consumes far less time, so yeah :>

Hey, thanks for the fr and welcome!

I'm a big Pokemon fan! I originally began playing with Fire red and Leaf green, and when I enjoyed that I went to Ruby/sapphire and eventually played the original red, blue, yellow (my bro had an N64 and a gameboy so that definitely helped). I did fall off the series around the release of x & y and that was just because I was branching out in terms of video games I'd play.
Likewise; what a coincidence. Let's be real, the games themselves started falling off since Gen 6 lol (Mega Evolution will always be the best gimmick, though). It's fair to say that the advent of 3D on the mainline is what separates the classic games from the modern games.

And yeah, I like Platinum and BW (B2W2 in particular) the most, with HGSS coming in second. Gens 4 and 5 are my favorite gens by a long shot (Can you guess that I grew up in the DS era lol?)

Here's a tier-list I made for fun:

Agreed on JJK S2's underwhelming music. That Gojo vs Toji example you gave ended up being one of the BETTER instances of sound design for this season, even. Most of the time there's no music at all or it's so flaccid that you don't even recognize it, let alone the times when the soundtrack is out of place and feels random. The only memorable instance for me has been Sukuna vs Jogo, with the music there fitting Sukuna's character and the dynamic intensity of the fight very well. Audio surely went a long way in quickly making that fight a fan-favorite in the series there.

The sound design for S2 in general has been a far cry from S1's and it's a shame that the once genuinely good score this anime had has seemingly been scrapped. The most egregious example of poor music this season was when Gojo activated his Domain Expansion in the metro station and jazz started playing while he was slaying a hundred curses in 0.2 seconds lmao (not helped by the drowsy narrator in the midst of it all).
Now imagine if instead of those flavorless and forgettable S2 soundtracks, the anime used this one from S1 for that moment and how much more impactful it would've felt (even the name of the OST indicates a perfect match): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OBcBGUeUVQ

What are your opinions for the second season so far (and since you the read the manga) the series?
I'll summarize it here since I'd rather not end up typing essays as responses: S2 has made me realize just how overhyped Shibuya Incident actually is (like a lot of other popular shounen arcs) and not just because of its inferior direction and audiovisuals compared to S1. It does contain the highest peaks of the series, but they're all located at the very end of the arc with the events that unfold immediately after Sukuna nukes Shibuya. And after Shibuya Incident, the series properly deteriorates in quality (including visually). But JJK is still one of the better modern shounen out there as well as battle shounen in general. I gave the manga a 6/10, but I'm most likely being generous with that score considering my ratings for CSM and HxH. I have a soft spot for the series and Gege as an artist, I guess.

For the op 7 this is the video you're talking about lol:
That's the one. A lot of times the cinematic and acting for these Japanese music videos are idiosyncratic (but in a charming way), but everything about After Dark is genuinely great and a lot of effort was clearly put into it. I even laughed at the office scenes where the guy was always trying to keep his back out of sight from his coworkers.

I've heard the iconic Ready Steady Go and Resonance already; the former is my second favorite song from the FMA adaptations. PRIDE by High and Mighty Color is one I'm gonna keep going back to now, thanks bro.

Here are two more bangers. I love the first because it's the literal embodiment of the 2000s and anyone will recognize what anime it's from, whilst the second is Japan incarnate:

You make a good point about how the music is incorporated into the tone and direction and how it's used as foreshadowing. What Persona game do you like most? I'm gonna assume P5 like myself. It truly oozes personality, has strong characterization and is aesthetically and atmospherically my favorite (but these are all things P3 and P4 excel in too, of course). I also enjoy its high concept narrative the most, and it objectively has the best gameplay in many ways. But I've seen plenty find P3 as having the best narrative (I do find unique charm in its consistently darker tone) whilst P4 the best characters.

I look forward to P6 whenever Atlus releases that; it's clearly going to be their most ambitious title yet. Since we've covered the primary colors with 3, 4 & 5, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that 6's signature palette is going to be black & white, but I wouldn't mind purple, and green wouldn't surprise me either (but which I hope it's not).

(also enjoy philosophy and identity so that's a further win-win)
Yeah, I figured. You have Eva in your faves as well, after all. You've got good taste in music too lol. I recognize Home Made Kazoku and FLOW on there btw. There are just too many iconic 2000s Japanese songs that were performed for Bleach and Naruto. Personally, my most nostalgic bands would have to be UVERworld and Asian Kung-Fu Generation.

Btw you're a Pokemon fan, aren't you?

Persona's got a very strong identity and is one of my favorite video game series indeed. P5's style especially though, damn. So striking with the red, black & white color combo and comic book-like flair, coupled with my favorite cast in the series. Persona actually reminds me of early Bleach in a lot of ways (P3 in particular) with its youthful and groovy urban vibe, the rule of cool, similar power system and thematic emphasis on the self (identity) and soul -- one's persona. Oh yeah, and the director for Bleach TYBW worked a lot of its anime adaptations, including the P3 movies. Both series are practically distant family. And of course, who can talk about it without mentioning the music (kinda like Bleach)? Like, it's biologically impossible not to vibe with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTczCpIaLAU

What are your favorite soundtracks? Some of mine:

Also nice pfp again lol, it's from Nier automata I believe (bought the game recently actually but haven't had a chance to play).
Oh, then get ready for an unforgettable media experience. It too is a title with highly regarded music. If you like metafiction, philosophy and abstract themes such as existentialism and identity, then you'll probably fall in love with it. NieR:Automata is high art. Deserves all the acclaim it gets.

Yep, the percentages just mean how much in common your ratings are with mine.

One Piece fans behaving like delusional monkeys on social media? What's new, hm? It's the worst fanbase on these spaces and part and parcel of your series appealing to the lowest common denominator as well as being primarily targeted at children.

Bleach being referenced in court is wild. The Bount filler arc in particular being referenced in court is even wilder. I'm not even that surprised, though. It's one of the most valuable and influential animanga IPs and its 'soft power' is arguably greater than its commercial one. I know Bleach's OST played in some of the Olympics.

Happy to help, friend. Enjoy peak manga. Binging it is honestly a beautiful experience, not least owing to Kubo's cinematic page composition and pacing. And not sure if I ever mentioned this, but great lists + based Persona enjoyer. 80%+ affinity lol.

Thanks for the heads up fam. I'll give the TV series a shot if I enjoy the OVA or if the OVA feels incomplete. And I'll most likely be watching it subbed, since 9 times out of 10 they're better even when there's a good dub. TTGL is a great example of an anime where the dub is the definitive experience, however.

Modern anime lacks the pensive mood and edge that those in the 2000s had, which I miss. I generally prefer anime of that era and think it's quite easily the golden age of the medium in terms of creative integrity. I also enjoy the sharper characteristics with delicate outlines that you'd see in its art styles over the contemporary form, though anime has always been aesthetic and is the medium's biggest appeal.

Those Read or Die tunes are kino. I vibe with the smooth jazz and ambience. And the anime seems up my alley, so into my PTW it goes.

And no prob about the Toaru help. It's my favorite 'anime' series, after all. Enjoy the best LN there is (and one of the few only good ones).
the13thStruggle Nov 16, 2023 6:55 AM
I see you're a fellow Grimmjow enjoyer even though Ulquiorra was always the more popular of the two (I love both as well). And, the OST and sound design in general were the OG anime's biggest strengths. Shiro Sagisu's iconic score is undeniably among the best in the medium, and his music is nostalgic at this point (especially the soundtracks that would play frequently earlier on in the anime like Creeping Shadows). But the anime in general is very nostalgic as it has a strong 2000s aesthetic and vibe.

Bleach in particular is one of those series you appreciate more as you mature due to its subtle, "show, don't tell" sophistication in presentation, as you realize just how layered it actually is. The amount of subtext it has is immense. All helped by the YouTube Bleach scholars and those with high media literacy analyzing its narrative, characters and lore to give audiences (especially Westerners) a deeper understanding and appreciation for the series and attract new readers while changing the minds of some who fell for the debunked anti-Bleach propaganda of the early 2010s. It's satisfying seeing the pendulum regarding the reception for this series swing the other way against those vocal yet dying minority of detractors. Fans of the series are feasting with this new anime and future projects from Kubo for his franchise. And you know it's a good time to be a Bleach fan when you see all the hype bandwagonners doing a 180 on the series and pretending like they never slandered it LOL.

Factualpilled and Kubopilled for saying Bleach has the best storyline of the three. Actually, a lot of the serious arcs in Gintama like Shogun Assassination remind me of early Bleach and perhaps why you enjoyed it most. Bleach has the best foreshadowing of the bunch and when it comes to thematic storytelling, it is undoubtedly superior by a long mile. Its abstract and timeless themes of death, identity, self-affirmation etc are far more meaningful than the earthly and overdone likes of "muh cycle of hatred" (Naruto), "discrimination is le bad" (One Piece) and whatnot. While the themes that they share such as loyalty and the importance of bonds Bleach does better as well. I've always appreciated its darker/more mature, ethereal flavor and pensive character-driven narrative. Even as a kid I could never get into Naruto or One Piece due to their standard shonen setting, premise, tone and themes and found the former too melodramatic while the other childish (but I can still see their appeal and they have their own strengths; I wouldn't call them irredeemable garbage with no soul like I would World Trigger or Seven Deadly Sins for instance). In terms of that ethereal, pensive overtone I was talking about, the only other shonen I've really seen it in are FMA and D Gray-man. But I very much love the fact that many of the most beloved shonen of today such as the "Dark Trio" have taken the "essence" of Bleach in some shape or form.

Yh my first exposure to Toaru was also Accelerator. His vector manipulation is one of the most creative abilities in fiction. Gojo is basically a watered down version of him lol (he even has the white hair).

The LNs and manga are indeed different, but they are still one united story. They take place at the same time with the same overarching narrative and characters, but because you're reading the perspective of two separate MCs, you're seeing their own individual events unfold that ultimately intertwine with each other and still pertain to the greater world and story. Misaka is a secondary character in Index but the MC in Railgun and vice-versa for Touma.

New Testament is the sequel to Old Testament, and the sequel to NT is Genesis Testament.
