I was 6, and looking for cartoons one morning (on those 4-5 channels that we had on state TV), when I stumbled upon a strangely drawn cartoon that looked nothing like Tom&Jerry or Bugs Bunny.
It has apparently started airing on that day, and it was about some big alien ship that crash-landed on Earth, and there was this cocky kid pilot and he was getting scolded for messing up a celebration, and then some dudes from outer space attacked and kid got into battle by mistake, and he was crashing and pressed something, and his plane TURNED into a... GIANT-freaking-ROBOT...!?!!!
That was the most awesome thing I have seen in my (not very long at that point) life and I became anime fan, years before I even learned those weird cartoons are named anime :))
