I've been somewhat like that too, I haven't been on MAL with any regularity at all. I guess I'm a bit of an outlier because I got busier during quarantine, rather than less. I can always find an endless stream of things to do at home, but anime hasn't been one of them. I've barely seen a couple of episodes in the past two months, and this year I only started and finished one series (that was The Rose of Versailles. I think I needed something really different from recent anime to be able to see it whole, and this old and good story did the trick).
I quite agree with you that anime's charms "waste away" with time. My patience has not kept up with the majority that I’ve tried to watch during the past year, and it's been even longer since I slimmed down what I'm willing to watch. Lately it's felt too time-wasting so I didn't even try, but right now I do feel slightly in the mood for anime again, so I'll see if I pick well and can find the space!
Oh, the Code Geass films... I've seriously wondered why they decided to revive the franchise at all after the perfect R2 ending, and I've somewhat deliberately ignored those sequels (if that's what they are). I'm glad to get some reliable information on them, as I still didn't know if they were good or bad. I tried to watch the Akito the Exiled OVA a couple of times, and never finished even the first episode. Maybe the films' quality is similar to that, but in truth even R2 isn't as good as it used to. I tried to re-watch it two years ago, and abandoned it.
In case you reply anytime soon, do you prefer the Fushigi Yuugi anime or the manga? I always wanted to try the latter, but then, it's long!
It's nice to receive these surprise responses, and I'm glad to see that you're doing well! I hope it keeps that way for long :)
Haha, I don't ice skate. I just like to watch figure skating. What did you watch this season, besides the Olympics?
I've hardly seen any ballroom dancing in any form... which is why I have enough curiosity for the anime series. I thought I could see it after Yuri on Ice!, as a sports-themed continuation, but I fell into another series (or no series).
The Citrus manga seems pretty popular, and also long so I'd like to know if the anime adapts the story well or it has it cut. But I'm not nearly as much familiar with Kokkoku... your description of it is considerably more appealing than MAL's synopsis :).
I haven't watched anything very recent, but the last season and the current one do have some titles I want to try out. I'll likely start one of them next.
Your activity is really peculiar, your long absences don’t mean you’ve given up on MAL! And when you return you seem to be a bit better off too, I hope you make the most out of that free time you’ve earned.
I did watch Yuri on ICE!!!, though it seems like a long time ago now. Its detailed focus on a sport is praiseworthy, but the development turned lacklustre during the last episodes. I wished they had taken character development a bit more seriously. But it was quite entertaining to watch, and I learnt some things. It's worth the try. Ballroom e Youkoso looks quite similar in various senses, have you considered to watch it?
Last time I watched airing anime was during the autumn season, in fact I have just started only my second series this year (and I’ve been away from comments too). I also hadn’t heard of those series you mention (I haven’t checked the seasons’ charts either) except for Citrus, because I know the manga. Which one is the best of them?
Those two I have watched though. Made in Abyss is one of the last I completed in 2017, and I saw Kuzu no Honkai when it was airing. Both have some very good aspects.
Despite the lack of anime my year is being very good so, great for both!
I'm afraid that, after adding it to my watching plans years ago, my motivation to start Haruhi Suzumiya has almost entirely faded! I do intend to watch the core series. Not just to figure out what that permanently named "endless eight" really is. But I'll probably pass on the spin-offs. Tsuruya has an ONA dedicted to her, if you care for the character enough to watch her in silly drawings.
Right now I do not have those time constraints and I am watching more, although my interest is not constant. It might also be because I picked very long series and for a while I haven't been good with those (or they haven't been good enough with me). Actually, if you have space for one only choosing Keijo!!!!!!!! is surprising haha. About Yuri!! On Ice, I've heard that it's both very good and very overrated. I'll have to see for myself!
As for me, I'm finding enjoyment in older series, the 1984 Glass Mask being for now the prime example. But not many astounding anime have passed my way recently. Regarding appeal Millennium Actress could be an example.
If we do not speak soon, have a great year next :).
The outcome of the resolution did come to mind at some point. As long as that was the one you prioritised, at least it sounds like a more satisfying goal than logging in MAL once a month.
If you watched Strike the Blood recently I guess the sequel arrives in good timing for you. I tried to see it a few times in the past, but decided it wasn't worth it (I already gave it more chances than necessary).
I'm quite disconnected from anime right now, due to time constraints. So I haven't even studied the season's chart yet. From what I already knew, I'll watch Euphonium's second season, possibly 3-gatsu no Lion's adaptation (since I have read the manga) and maybe something new like Yuri!!! on Ice. From the previous seasons, nothing I watched was very good.
Is Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu a good series? Do tell me if you watch anything else of interest! I hope the slower workload allows you to see some more resolutions fulfilled as well.
Will anime take a noticeable share of your time during the mini vacation?
Love Live is insanely popular. It’s not so obvious now but while it was airing it seemed like if it was on a whole different level than the regular idol anime. To me from the outside it looks just like one more of the bunch, with prettier designs and more focus on characters maybe, but I wonder how different it really is.
Try out Noragami if you’re still interested, it does have virtues, but I definitely wouldn’t buy it. My opinion about Aragoto might be rare, however. Many users seem to love it beyond measure. I wouldn’t mind trying out Gundam, but it’s so extremely extensive I wouldn’t know where to begin.
It’s always enjoyable to deliver news of series the other person is fond of :). I don’t know what I’ll be watching next but maybe by some of the next times you write I’ll have something to say on the first season.
This year has not been the best so far, but I still have plenty of time to improve it! If you’re managing your resolution of logging in at least once per month, that’s already something :P.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on ef! It was interesting to read someone else’s insight in detail. I can’t say how my impressions would’ve been if I had watched it now, but from what I remember I can respond to some of the things you mention.
I did like Chihiro and Renji’s story, but not so much because of the characters themselves. They weren’t the most well built characters to begin with, but the story (especially with the visual analogies and the parallel tale indirectly protagonised by Chihiro) interested me a lot. Chihiro’s condition does seem a bit unrealistic, but I’d say part of it was intended, since she was meant to be a distant character that wouldn’t usually interact or be clear about her life. And Renji is bland, that’s the struggle of his life. He’s uncharacteristic, unremarkable, average. I think that’s all that is shown of his background, how little special he found himself, beginning with his choice on what to study for the future. I suppose the point of that part was becoming involved with Chihiro, a girl so unusual, and help her with a mix of both his normality and another side of him he wasn’t aware of. Because of that, their interaction does seem a bit forced especially at the beginning.
The telephone scene holds a position among the best anime scenes I’ve seen so far. I don’t generally think of parts of an anime individually, but that one left a memory.
Hopefully you won’t find the “Parish dude” too uninteresting because he’ll take a lot of screen time in Melodies.
Maybe you remember that not many replies ago you asked me about Noragami. I have one episode left to finish the second season, and I don’t recommend it anymore. I said that I liked the first season back when I watched it (I don’t think I would’ve as much if that had not been a couple of years ago, however) and I maintain that, but it does not apply to its sequel. Aragoto tries very hard to be dramatic and to add suspense, but (surprisingly so, considering the elements the series can make use of) to me it translates as boredom and plot-holes only.
If it interests you, give it a try. It’s very possible and even likely that you enjoy it as I once did. But the series is no longer good as a whole.
And did you know of Saekano’s second season? It was announced quite a while ago but it was after your last response so I had not gotten to ask.
yeah there's a lot of tv shows i'm watching right now, i recently started "the shannara chronicles" it's kinda LOR but there's only 5 episodes out so i can't say yet, if it's good or not!! and there's other series i'm watching like supernatural, TVD, the originals, arrow, the flash, reign, izombie, and some korean dramas... also waitin for the sixth season of GOT, actually i think i'm gonna go crazy with all the anime and tv shows i have to watch every week, i don't even have enough time to sleep but well i'm still managing somehow... ahh ok so you're american! cool!!
well, if you wanna some recommendations for this season there's: boku dake ga inai machi, haikyuu, Ajin, Prince of stride and Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu, they're really good especially the first one i mentioned.. so i wish you luck with work and all.. talk to you soon (*^▽^)/
Normally, i don't have enough time to watch that much anime but like i said it was a sabbatical year (mitai na) and i had downloaded a lot of anime so... even know, as you can see on my plan-to-watch list, there's still plenty of anime i have yet to watch but i don't have enough time with work and all. i can only watch a few from the current season, that way i can watch a few episodes every weekend , that and other american tv shows... btw i forgot to ask, where're you from?
let me think... i've watched a lot of anime last year since it was kinda sabbatical year for me.. so i've watched around 20 maybe more, but if i had to choose it would probably be Akatsuki no Yona and the Saiunkoku Monogatari series... i don't know this anime called "Utena" but i'll give it a try, it's not shoujo-ai is it?
This time I forgot about replying. I'm writing about only two short comments per week lately and I was about to start yours so many times I had ticked it in my mind as finished. There are so many things I could include in a list of New Year's resolutions, but I don't think I can do all of them! I'll make of it an incentive to suddenly complete long postponed things, like now.
The compatibility system has changed for sure, though I don't know how it works now. I had my highest percentage with you but now I don't think I have more than 'High' compatibility with any user friends.
I know about the effect that early anime has on the opinion of those same series, I enjoyed considerably almost every series I watched during my first year of anime and I'm not sure if it was because it was new to me back then, or because I picked very well (maybe because there were more good ones to pick from).
I would recommend both of those, yes. But depending on what you're looking for. Yuru Yuri is rather strange and "stable" comedy (not very varying in style and scenarios), but when I saw it years ago it was quite funny in a curious way and the characters became endearing. Noragami stands out visually and also musically, and the premise is appealing. I have not seen its sequel yet, but even if the first season fails to be completely fulfilling (concerning development) it introduces various elements that are worth the watch, and it was entertaining enough for me to finish it in two days.
You bought Ef? Oh, that's amazing! I hope you enjoy it. I think that at least the looks of it will be worth any good quality you might've purchased. I have high expectations for Utena. For what I know it's a series I'd want to love, if that makes sense. I hope you remember enough of it for a discussion by the time I watch it.
Merry Christmas! And happy New Year if your resolution doesn't make you drop by before 2016 arrives.
