So there's one thing I wanna scream at you right now: PLEASE don't drop this after three episodes. I won't guarantee you like it, but the first three episodes are the worst ones
They're pretty lame in a lot of ways. They're a bit too melodramatic, music has same tone, has some cliche directing at times, they're too showboaty about the 3d, you're not sure who the show is made for (old or new people), and the show in general doesn't have some of the snappiness in movement/timing (3D shows often don't hold poses long enough, they almost move a bit too much sometimes), or the
...
goofiness the OG show does esp with Vash...
It's kind of one big introductory arc but it kind of sucks.
BUT.
It starts getting good immediately after (which was frankly how the OG show was too? The first two filler episodes in OG are some of the worst) 4 is a bit worse but 5 to 10 are all banger after banger.
The show doesn't have the same "cool-factor" that the OG does, or again some of the goofy-charm but this more melodramatic and movie-like vibe starts really paying off with some of the really interesting things they start doing not only episode-to-episode, but the overarching narrative-- And those two factors feel more intertwined and connected than in the OG as well which had much more stand-alone plots.
Episode 5 which is Child of Blessing has a really good narrative structure where they switch from the past and present day without making it obvious, and it's almost a bit disorientating at first but it ends up being really really artful and heartfelt. This show is taking a lot of the elements from the original and using them in its own ways to tell a story with some pretty similar thematic explorations about whether sacrifice is really needed to survive in the world. In this particular anime it's focused on the exploitation of Plants and whether they'll exhaust and kill them like they did the resources of earth, or whether we're better letting Plants live and killing the Humans. Vash is also clearly younger and more indecisive at this point compared to the original Vash. Knives (besides his goofy piano playing) has more investment in actually finding a valid solution to the problems on the planet, and on getting Vash onto his side....
It feels really adaptational in a great way. It won't tick all your boxes the same way as the OG, esp with Vash himself, but it's arguably exploring things in an even more interesting things in in-depth ways while the original will satisfy your emotional or character story-telling itch more. And I feel both old and new viewers could probably watch it, but I'd probably recommend it to old viewers as long as you just aren't TOO attached to an adaptation needing to be the exact same (Which Trigun never was with its manga counterpart anyway, somewhat).
Some people say "why not do something original?" but I think it's good they used Trigun. It makes sense for it, the ideas are clearly inspired by questions the original poses, and it lets you shortcut a couple of the world-building elements... Which, by the way, I think this show does better too. The version of events on the spaceship with Rem are a lot more fleshed out in this version, excluding the whole love-triangle and rape accusation and so on. Its version is really good.
Seriously, give this a try. No pressure to like it like I said at the beginning, but I got really sucked in. I really like it.
