I've never read the book but I can imagine. Pretty much every book that's been adapted to a movie ruins the book and image for me. And I personally really do not like the idea of live action movies based on anime. Anime is wonderful as it is! I heard about Cowboy Bebop becoming a movie with Keanu Reeves as Spike. Seriously? Neo...Spike...just no.
my signature is hosted on a free webhost and uses PHP and it's GD library for image creation. It's basically a script that downloads the RSS feeds that you can find on your profile page on the bottom left (click here for example). From that it generates and returns an image.
mine is kind of unique in that I wrote the code from scratch (with some reference from others in some places). If you want to make something similar, you'd be best off learning a bit of php and then tinkering with Bard's signature script. Kuroshiroi has made an edit of it that is slightly easier to use: http://kuroshiroi.net78.net/distro/kallenmio.zip
If you've never done web programming before, then you should be warned that you'll probably be spending long hours tinkering with it to get it working.
Bard's script can do most everything that you have seen (custom fonts, angled text, mal series images, etc).
