I'm something of a basic viewer with a twist. Yes, I have the usual brand of "what was on" when I was growing up in regards to what I watched or read, but my viewing and reading experiences have changed since then.
For new anime movie, anime series, and manga, nowadays I essentially just watch shows and movies (not just anime, but of all genre) that people I know tell me are good or their favorites, or that I read A LOT of people online say are good.
Here are some notes on my reviews and review scores:
1.I rate everything based on my enjoyment of them. If there's holes in series but I still enjoy the series a lot, that won't get many bad marks. On the contrary, if I don't enjoy it but the plot is on point, I will give the plot its' due but still have a notable more negative review score. Basically
2. I care more about the flow of a manga or anime series more than the overall process. Having said that, when both are good and come together, I tend to give very high marks. Pacing, payoff, and precision are all key to me in this regard.
3. I give TV/manga series that go on too long more stringent ratings (ie: the Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu 2009 series, specifically in said series "Endless Eight" arc), but I am very lenient on shows that don't go on long enough, even if it has plot holes, lacking character development, or felt like it was somewhat rushed (ie: Angel Beats).
4. Most of the time I'll naturally rate movies higher than shows. This is because they are shorter. So if say a movie and a TV series (that has a total air time of well over 5 hours) both earn 9 ratings, chance are the TV show is better, but the movie is obviously easier to consume since it is less of a time commitment.
5. I don't think I have too heavy of genre bias that I know of. I might lean towards slice of life/adventures in life forms of entertainment, but on the flip side I hate anything that makes them brain dead. I just want something engaging, regardless of genre, regardless of whether or not it is made for males or females (or robots), it is "feminine" or "masculine," it is violence heavy or lacks violence, etc. I just care about my enjoyment.
6. If a series wraps up well and the enjoyment of the series carries say a lackluster plot (ie: the original Fate/Stay Night series), I tend to overlook that. This may bug people, but I am judging by my personal enjoyment levels.
7. I'm not really a harsh reviewer of Japanese media because it's all pretty simple. It's very easy to divide good and bad, and I tend to not watch or read anything terrible. I find that simplicity to give anime and manga a strong point. What I mean is when they're good, it's a freaking great watch or read, and when they're freaking great, it is an incredible watch or read.
