That said, Gintama continues to have a special place for me because it succeeds in being a simple shonen, with great action and choreography, often adult humor, interesting one-off dramas, and valuable historical references in a steampunk setting. This contrast is a formula that I fell in love with, many of the villains are caricatured and without much personality (with the exception of Hosen, for example), with motivations that are not very convincing. But it is a shonen, after all.
Naruto, on the other hand, has been on my list of disappointments since Shippuden, since the conclusion of the Pain arc. The abandonment of the fundamental idea of an oppressed and excluded boy for the new Jesus Christ and other plotholes prevent me from taking it seriously. The progressive abandonment of the basic ninja techniques that were so important before, and strategic fights exchanged for whoever summons the biggest monster, also disappointed me.
I identify with your comment about how our perception of time and its value changes after college and work, with less free time, it's difficult to insist on what we don't like or aren't being captured by its charm. It makes perfect sense, I remember my teenage self watching anything that was in the spotlight or something unknown out of pure curiosity, all to be part of something or just on impulse, like having a coffee to relieve tension due to abstinence. Those times are gone forever.
Your preference for more mature animes and mangas and a certain aversion to shonens make some sense and reflect your subjectivity. Since I'm divided between a man and a boy, I still have a bit of shonen in my heart, but I can't and don't have time to consume anything like I used to.
So I understand you being picky in this sense.
After I read the review, your favorites didn't surprise me at all. "I'm an edgy adult who only likes mature anime, but I've never read a real piece of literature or philosophy in my life, but since I like Monster and Vagabond I'm superior." This vibe.
